Has any team in the past decade won without a strong 1-2 punch up the middle?
I've seen a few posts essentially pointing the finger at Monahan, a guy who played through significant injuries and who I could almost feel wince in pain when he received a hard pass.
This thread already reads a bit like a witch hunt but I'm wondering why Backlund isn't getting more grief. The organization put a lot of faith in him with a fairly generous contract, and I didn't see enough a high enough compete level this season. I saw a lot of lackadaisical play in the defensive zone and far too much coasting.

THe phrase player you win with is such a poor description of a trait.
If you said I don't think he can be the number 1 player on a championship team in the NHL you might find some agreement
JG as a number 3 option on a cup team and that team is winning multiple
Cups.
Really I think his ideal scenario is carrying is scoring line with a 1b line that both scores and shuts the other team down. Last year Backlunds line was that line this year not so much.

A big question for this team is: what can Jankowski be?
Two years ago, we all imagined a 1-2 of Monahan/Bennett (in whichever order you like) with Backlund as the #3. Would have been awesome.

I think he’ll be gone for a number of reasons, the most obvious one being the fan apathy which will occur if he isn’t.
After all, the Flames are running a business.
No, that doesn’t mean that the animals are running the zoo, but it does mean there is no overwhelming reason to keep him.
I except that the Flames will rip off the bandaid very quickly, as soon as possible.

I don't believe some of this crap I am reading. I seriously question some of the opinions on here as they are dumbfounding and make me somewhat angry.
Keep at all costs: Gaudreau, Tkachuk
Keep at all costs for the most part but not in same category: Monahan, Hamilton
Don't want to trade due to age and potential: Bennett, Jankowski
Want to keep but not off the table: Backlund, Gio, Hamonic
Want to keep but not in same category: Shore, Lazar, Hathaway, Kulak
On the fence (could be trade bait or retained): Brodie, Ferland, Frolik, Stone
Do not want: Stajan, Brouwer, Bartkowski, Glass, Stewart
Please stop all the trade Gaudreau talk please. It's idiotic for a team looking to contend to trade a top 10 league wide talent.

I agree with all of this except I'd put Hamilton in the top category and I'd let Hathaway walk this summer.

I can see that since I left home this morning to drive to Calgary, CP has lost its collective mind.
I haven't read this whole thread, but I simply can't believe what I'm reading. Really, what are they putting in the water here?
Un-be-lievable.

I'd add Gio to the "keep at all costs" category. He may be getting up there in age, but he's still an elite Norris-caliber D man, and he's easily among the top 10 in the league at his position. A guy like that is not easy to replace.

An elite team can have 1 or 2 core players who are one-dimensional. It can't have 3 or 4. Of the Flames' core players (Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Backlund, Giordano, Hamilton), I'd say the bolded ones are one-dimensional.

You're talking about a 24 year old playing top pairing minutes on D and a 23 year old top line centre.
That take is devoid of context and patience.

I can't believe so many fans have fallen in love with the core of a team that has had such mediocre results for the last three years.

And I can't believe the amount of people so vocal about seemingly being ready to quit on and ship out players under 25.

I like the way Francis said "you cant question brouwer's compete level and will to win." And then said "I don't think Gully deserves the axe"
Like lol - are you ####ing kidding me?
People Francis says is not an issue: Gio, Smith, Tkachuk, Hamonic, Brouwer
Players who don't matter: Stajan, Bartowski, Kulak, Versteeg, Lazar
Player's unlikely to be the problem: Johnny, Backlund, Frolik, Stone, Jankowski, Hathaway,
Who that leaves: Ferland, Bennett, Brodie, Hamilton
Its not rocket science who he might be calling out. It's 2 or 3 of the above four players.

I like Hamilton, but if you want a top forward, you trade him. You’ve got to give to get.

Have any of those players shown any improvement in their two-way play in the last two years? There's nothing wrong with a couple guys in the core who don't bring anything to the table except scoring. But you will never get anywhere in the playoffs unless you're confident putting most of your core players out on the ice when you're trying to protect a lead.
Toews, Crosby, Keith, Hossa, Kopitar, Doughty, Bergeron, Marchand, Chara, Malkin. All players a coach wouldn't hesitate to put on the ice against the other team's top line when protecting a lead with 4 minutes to go in game 7. Can you honestly say the same about Gaudreau, Monahan, and Hamilton? Some fans dream of Hamilton being a stud defenceman, but the guy has been in the NHL for six seasons and he still isn't trusted enough to kill penalties. What does that tell you?

I assume a lot of us may be "going" away for at least a year if GG is back next year

Didn't he also lead the league defensemen in goals
