Humboldt Broncos tragedy.

Last night can only be described as the longest, worst and most tragic night of my career. The images can’t be unseen or forgotten, the stories can’t be unheard or ignored. Meeting each family and explaining the extent of each injury was nothing short of a painful exercise of cruelty. Families waiting for hours to identify their loved ones and smiling of joy at the idea of a significant injury as long as it meant that their loved one was alive brought chills to my spine.

I want to thank you few people and I know I will forget some. The performance during this code orange was nothing but phenomenal.

1- first and foremost: the nurses in the emergency department and in the ICU. Your tears made it easier for my tears to flow. Your passion, care and love is so admirable. I thank you for being the amazing humans that you are. You saved many lives and comforted 100s of other lives.

2- The physicians who came in from everywhere to help. Anesthesiologist, General surgeons, emergency department physicians, neurosurgeons, radiologists. You all put eveything aside including your own families and came and put your head down and got to work. You called in and insisted that we call you if we can use you.

3- The respiratory therapists who are often overlooked were the silent heroes as always.

4- the hospital organization and the Saskatchewan Health Authority for making sure that this horrible national tragedy was less painful than what it is already.

5- To the talented residents that stepped up to the challenge and helped beyond what is expected of them.

6- To the social workers who will be hurting silently today after hearing all those tragic stories.

7- Finally to my colleagues Bruce Cload and Jo Kawchuk for their support and help.

May this be my first and final Code Orange. Never want to see what I saw again.

What an honour to know that you all have helped save a large number of lives.

Thank you everyone and May those painful hours be followed by many hours and days of healing.

What a sad and horrible night.

This is really hitting home everywhere here in SK. The young captain of the Regina Pat Canadians was just called up to the Broncos last week, and was one week from his 17th birthday.

Every kid in hockey on the prairies remembers driving on wind swept roads and early mornings at small town rinks. Those memories should only bring joy. As a hockey dad this just breaks me up. There are no words...

Yes his Dad is a teacher at WCHS and very involved with rugby and minor hockey in Lethbridge.

For context: Dr. Masri is a Syrian-Canadian, and in 2012 he volunteered to travel overseas and work at a field hospital in Syria. It really says a lot if he's describing this bus crash as the worst night of his career, even worse than what he undoubtedly would have seen while treating those injured in the conflict in Syria.

Dr. Hassan Masri visited Syria two times as a child. But his third trip to the country, as a second-year medical resident in 2012, was the most memorable. The Saskatoon-based critical care physician snuck into the embattled country through the Turkish border to work a northern field hospital.

He and other volunteers worked day and night in minus-15 degree weather. He often woke up terrified after hearing bombs fall nearby. Death was a frequent reality. Meals were often no more than a few olives and a piece of bread. He lost 12 pounds in two weeks.

“That trip was probably the most life-changing event in my life. I knew the situation was really bad in Syria, we hear news, see videos and listen to Amnesty International’s reports but when you see it first-hand it’s quite different,” he said.

He often thinks about a Syrian girl he befriended during that trip. She visited him every day, bringing a sandwich and a cup of coffee made by her grandmother. She loved taking photos, often posing for selfies with Masri. She obsessed over filters and editing, even though she’d never have access to the photos herself.

Masri saw dozens of patients every day, many of whom hadn’t seen a doctor in months or sometimes years. The hospital only had one life support machine. Often more than one patient needed it at a time. Masri and his counterparts sometimes had to choose who needed it most.

“It was a very unsettling feeling to play God,” he said. “When I came back I was very different, very grateful.”

Wow. Unreal. Over $1,000,000 now. The original goal was $10,000. I’m not really sure what you do with all that money but it feels good. Maybe it’s a way of quantifying clollective grief. l’m sure that there are people involve whose burdens will be lessened by those donations and that’s a good thing.

People hear about something so awful and want to do something, but there's nothing practical most of us can do at the moment. Donating is one thing that people can do. Hopefully the money can help with funeral expenses where needed and help to cover living costs for families that suddenly find themselves spending extended time in Saskatoon (or wherever the hospital happens to be).

I was wondering if he had suffered a medical emergency and that is why he blew the stop sign. Not only will he suffer emotionally but I imagine he is looking at some serious prison time.
