Will the Flames go after Tavares?
Apologies if this should be in the trade spec and rumors thread; however, I have heard a lot of discussion about Tavares on this board, the fan 960 and even some hockey analysts in recent days and wanted to create a topic on it to discuss further.
1. Will the Flames go after Tavares? I say they will most certainly explore the option. How could you not?
2. What are the chances Tavares would consider Calgary? I'd say he would consider the Flames due to their projected growth over the next few years. Some exciting young players in Gaudreau,Tkachuck, Hamilton. He could see himself as having the ability to push this team over the top.
3. Max term for a UFA contract is 7 years, how much $ do you think he gets per year? I've heard everything from he can hold out for the max which is 12 or perhaps he would take 10-11 to play for an upcoming team/contender.
4. If the Flames were to sign Tavares, how does that impact Monahan and Backlund? That's a lot of $ tied up in your C positions.
5. What other teams do you feel are potential landing spots?
Looking forward to some discussion!
Cheers.

For sure Treliving enquires. I put the chance at having a legitimate shot at like 5%.
Getting him would push every center down the chart, which would have been the ideal scenario when we drafted Bennett.

Tavares is definitely getting max term and pretty close to max salary. Tre goes after everyone and I know he'll likely do the same with Tavares. The problem is Tavares holds all the cards and can go anywhere.
Personally I see the Rangers making a massive play if Tavares can handle the fall out from the island.
I can also see a team like the ducks making some moves to free cap space to get him with their core aging.

I don’t see Calgary making the top 10 finalist list for Tavares but I am sure they will inquire.

It would be dumb if not all GMs that have the cap space for Tavares inquired about him.

If he makes it to UFA they would be dumb not to.
Hopefully he's got a really good relationship with Hamonic and is a HUGE Johnny Hockey fan, otherwise I just don't see the appeal for him.
Oldest barn in the league and neither side budging on a new one.
No long term goalie option in place, same as the nightmare he's dealing with in NY.
Western Canada, so one of the worst travel schedules.
Don't think the taxes here are all that favorable.
Team that just missed the playoffs and is struggling to find traction coming out of rebuild.
Here's to hoping for a miracle though.

I dont think we could afford him but I sure would be throwing a 7 year 10 mil plus deal for him. He would not sign here though

1. Will the Flames go after Tavares? Nope. Unless by go after you mean talk to his agent for all of 5 seconds.
2. What are the chances Tavares would consider Calgary? Zero. Less then zero actually.
Lets see the criteria: Stable ownership/Stadium? NO. Successful/winning team historically ? No. Successful season/good chance at cup next year? NO. Exciting city for players to come too? No.
3. Max term for a UFA contract is 7 years, how much $ do you think he gets per year? 8 Years 90-95 million from NYI, or 7 at $85
4. If the Flames were to sign Tavares, how does that impact Monahan and Backlund? Yes. If we signed him it would impact our centers.
5. What other teams do you feel are potential landing spots? NYI 40%, Rangers 25%, Philly 10%, SJ 10%, Vegas 5%, Vancouver 5%, Washington 5%

Calgary is one of the few teams that could afford him under the salary cap. But why would he come to the oldest building in the league after dealing with an arena mess in New York? Ken king/nenshi little fued will probably be a big reason why he won’t come here.
Sadly I see Vancouver making a big payment for him. He can have all of the sedin’s money

31 teams will go after John Tavares. He’s the type of player that hits free agency once in a blue moon.
I can’t see him coming here but who knows.

He will not want to come to Calgary; let's move on to realistic options.

Treliving will inquire and that's where it ends. Tavares has no reason to pick Calgary ahead of other options that will be out there.

Does Tavares want to come here? That's my question. The flames organization regardless of who is GM have always coveted certain players and sometimes we get them and sometimes we don't.
Names......Jay Boumeester, Olli Jokinen, Chris Drury are names of players that we got and we're pursued but never lived up to the hype.
I hope we have some other names on a list of people we should be seriously looking at.
I do hope we try and graduate a few guys next year as watching certain players development makes me wonder how close they are.
Dube, Wotherspoon, Mangiapane, Tuulola, Ruzicka, Gawdin, Valimaki, Fox, Phillips, Parsons , Pribyl are all players I am intrigued with as they either have size , speed , both and or have some great potential to be developed .
In years past we never had the opportunity to even talk about developing, graduating players in our system and I haven't seen us add successfully a NHL ready player.....it's backfired seemingly every Time.
Tre needs to look hard and long and be willing to pay, sacrifice, bleed and sweat to make this team better as there's no more time for experimental reclamation projects all In the name of saving money or whatever excuse they want to come up with.
Really really tired of hearing we tried , we were in on it, it was close blah blah blah.
Go big or go home Flames. If Edwards will let you spend money then do it...... especially when looking for a new coach.

No. Treliving may call Tavares' agent and leave a message, but that call isn't getting returned. Treliving knows the situation he is in. Too much of a mess to clean up in his own backyard before trying to convince a big free agent fish that this little pond is the one he should swim in.

I don't even think its really about the team or the potential the team has. Its simply the fact I don't see him choosing Calgary as a city.

Just because I have to see as many times as I can before reality kicks in and he signs somewhere else:
Gaudreau - Tavares - ________
Tkachuk - Monahan - ________
Ferland - Backlund - Frolik
What a start to a top 9 forward group that would be.
Pretty much plug any half decent player into those top 2 RW spots and they could tag along just fine.

Not a chance we get Tavares. We have plenty of cap space for next season, but down the road we'll have way too many contracts to take care of to afford a Tavares like contract. Other teams will be more desperate and they'll win out on the sweepstakes over whatever we can afford.

I think you gotta keep Monahan and Gaudreau together. They just compliment each other too well.
Adding Tavares would give us two first lines, and that’s a luxury most teams don’t have. I’d put him with Tkachuk.

You think Tavares or any player for that matter give a hoot about what the mayor and ownership's puppett are doing in the media? If I'm Tavares i'm looking for a city with favorable or at minimum reasonable tax rates, an appealing climate and a team with above average prospects for success. End of story.
I would wager Tavares hasn't lost a minute of sleep over the ongoing Brooklyn arena issues. The building and local politics are nearly insignificant to someone cashing serious dough to play professional sports. Tre will try to sign him, but with the team's max player salary policy and penchant for only overpaying crummy players like Brouwer, the odds are beyond minuscule.
