You're right, he's always been a LW and both guys are left shots. Most guys can swap from LW to RW and if he can't swap to RW, there are options for the lines.
Gaudreau - Monohan - Bennett
JVR - Backlund - Tkachuk
Frolik - Jankowski - Athanasiou
or
Gaudreau - Monohan - Bennett
JVR - Jankowski - Tkachuk
Frolik - Backlund - Athanasiou
or
Gaudreau - Monohan - Bennett
JVR - Jankowski - Frolik
Tkachuk - Backlund - Athanasiou
To me the need for scoring and speed trumps. What exactly the lines will look like can be figured out in training camp. The added benefit is that being able to swap guys around in the line-up should allow the coach to create favourable match-ups. Either way it's essentially swapping out Brouwer and Hathaway for JVR and Athanasiou (that alone is a massive improvement). If JVR isn't your guy and Kane is, I think that works too. I think Kane is the better player of the 2, but I still worry about whether he disappears after a big contract. Down the road I see Foo or Dube as the Frolik replacement.

With it being public knowledge that Calgary is on JVR's no trade list, don't expect him to come to Calgary unless the Flames are offering him significantly more money than other teams. In other words likely an overpayment.

Maybe a brodie- domi swap or something similar...
Gaudreau - Monahan - Kane (or JVR)
Tkachuk - Backlund - Domi (or other Brodie trade)
Bennett - Jankowski - Athanasiou
Lazar - Shore - Frolik
Gio - Hamilton
Kulak - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson
Edit: I prefer athanasiou to wood only because one is producing on an over performing team while one is on an underachieving team, and athanasiou has also seen ~20 goals twice now.

Agreed. I like the player Kane instead of JVR. I still question whether his character will be a problem but if Flames management doesn't, he's the better player and brings a lot more edge to his game than JVR. I'd also target Athanasiou first. I think he is the better player.
The only worry I'd have for what you've suggested is having 2 unproven NHLers on D (I really like Andersson, and he has looked great in the last couple games, but I'd want to see him in 30 more games before declaring he's an NHLer). While I think playing 2 rookie D is a gamble that could pay off, it could also explode into a terrible mess. I think my preference would be moving the other of Stone or Brodie during the season if it turns out Andersson is playing lights out and is a surefire NHLer. It will also give the Flames a chance to see if Valimaki or Kylington is the better option and ready to bring up. I'm also not against moving Ferland, but to me you need to bring back someone who can fight and play if he is gone. I think that may be really difficult. There are not too many of those guys.

Hmm... good to know. I think if you are on a 10 team no-trade list, there is no way that player is coming your way. JVR is out in my mind, based on that alone.
Do you know how management feels about Kane's character?

Don't make excuses for RRR. That wasn't at all what he said. He's taken up the gauntlet from Tinordi of useless, hyperbole-filled drive-by comments knocking the team or the forum here as a collective entity.

I'd like Flames to go all in on Tavares
Then trade Brodie for a top 6 RW
Trade prospect D for another good goalie
Dump salary as applicable (Brouwer, Frolik, Lazar maybe Bennett around Christmas)
Johnny - Tavares - New Guy
Tkatchuk - Monahan - Foo
Bennet/Mangia - Backlund - Ferland
Klimchuk - Janko - Hathaway
Shore
Gio - Hamilton
Stone - Hamonic
Kulak - Andersson
Bart/Val (if he earns it out of camp)
Smith
New Guy
(i'd sell Bennett low if someone was taking Brouwer too. maybe bunble Frolik and Lazar too)

I'm on also on board with all of this, minus trading Lazar as I think he has shown some solid improvement this year.
The need for a goalie beyond smith is something we don't talk about enough either. It could get pretty frightening next season if Rittich and Gillies aren't able to progress.

The 2 rookie D could be a gamble, but Kylington has 3 full season in the AHL under his belt now. He's not an ordinary rookie in that sense!
For me, Kane takes the fight/fiesty role of Ferland and you fill ferland's spot with one of the skill/speed players we were talking about.

All fair points. The end to this season is very disappointing, but it's pretty exciting talking about the off-season! I could see pretty much anything happening.

Like that too. Great upgrade on size and the center position while maintaining our grit! Like AV as coach. Good options for AV to shuffle guys up and down the line-up depending on the match-up. Think the key to affording Tavares long term is moving Frolik so I like that too.

Why does everyone want to trade Ferland? At the end of his third full season in the NHL he is over .5 ppg, has just scored 20 goals, has improved every single year, and has the ability to dominate games physically.
Last year all everyone wanted was a guy who could play with Johnny and Monny and put up 40-50 points Ferland has done that and we probably haven't even seen the best of him yet. But people are super quick to ship him off in any package for a mediocre return.
He was on pace for 35 goals at one point this year, but with Monny's injury and the whole team crumbling he never reached that. If he improves again next year, like he has every year, and the team doesn't crumble why can't he produce at that pace again?

Yes, but if the team didn't crumble he could have got back to a better pace for the rest of the year. People have ups and downs in a season.

I hope my feeling about that is wrong but I decided why not spit ball a trade if that happens. Now as for the trade it wouldn't happen anyhow because the minute we ask for Provorov Hextall hangs up the phone, even for Johnny Gaudreau. Calling Provorov a "nice young player" is like calling Drew Doughty a decent D man. He is 21 and had 15 goals this year and by the time he fully develops will be one of the top 5 D men in the NHL. Travis Konecny after an extremely poor first half of the season numbers wise rebounded to score 24 goals this year as a 21 year old. Going forward he should be a consistent 30 goal guy who plays with grit and an edge. Yes Simmonds will need a new contract but that is doable and gives the Flames a big nasty RW that can score a lot of goals. He sort of had a down year with only 24 goals as he is usually good for 30. The funniest thing you said was about trading JG for this package was bad because of our need for scoring when this trade greatly increases our scoring. As much as I love JG you are right, this is a bad trade...for the Flyers. They would never do this. The amount of people who think this deal is terrible has to be a clear cut example of not looking at a deal from both sides.
|
I simply do not agree with your take on this one. The post above does not change my mind.
I don’t see Gaudreau forcing a trade this summer because of this health issue his dad had. If he did I wouldnt target a young Dman as the centerpiece of the trade. I also cringe at a 6x6 deal it will take to get Simmonds and am not sold thst Konecy will be more than what he is right now. We give up the best player on the deal.
Subtracting the only true forward superstar we have will not increase our scoring. The 3 players do have slightly more points than the 2 players we send out but moving Johnny leaves the Flames with zero superstar players.

Yeah but his up was a really hot streak and his down came at a critical time. Trading him would be selling high. I'm a little biased though, as I think Ferland is a little overrated here.

I agree selling high would be a wise move but after his stats have taken a nose dive I am not sure he is worth as much as we hope he would be
