Sounds like all from one house, and medical instead of trauma injuries.

Brideaux said 12 of the surviving patients inside the home were children, ranging in age from four months to late teens.
They’ve been transported to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, which sources tell Postmedia has been placed on a mass casualty incident alert.
A thirteenth patient, an adult in his late teens, was also taken to hospital for treatment.
They’re all described to be in stable condition.
Brideaux said all of the victims were from the same residence, and there was no evidence of trauma or a violent episode.
While he didn’t elaborate on the nature or cause of their medical distress, sources tell Postmedia an undetermined respiratory condition is responsible rather than external factors such as carbon monoxide or a toxic substance.

From years teaching on reserves, that many people in a home isn’t uncommon.

Is that a thing? I imagine it would need to be everywhere in the house if that were the case.

If there is enough mold in the house, I can see it being a thing. Everyone breathes in the spores and you would get mass respiratory problems. A co-workers mom got quite sick from mold that developed in her wall from a leaky roof.

A person I know, who knows the reserve well, and the specific house involved is predicting meth lab.

Lots of rumours at this point. Another from Reddit:

I work in the area and know the first responders on scene. One dead, one critical and 12 with various stages of rash/open wounds/vaginal infections/respiratory infections. The conditions in the house were horrible and it sounds like neglect. It’s horrible to hear and those children need to be protected. Conditions like that are not uncommon out on Nakoda and I hope this is a seriously unfortunate wake up call.

I wouldn’t think mould would affect a dozen people all at the same time.

Yeah, I want to be clear this is a 'gut feeling,' but it is from a person who has very intimate knowledge of the reserve.

First Nations across Canada have a lot of issues but the Stoney Nakoda is horribly managed, incredibly corrupt and it is a huge shame that the reserve is in such poor condition.
I previously did some O&G work for the Nation and met with some of their leaders at that time. The economic disparity between the council members and the general population is incredible. A huge chunk of their funds routinely go unaccounted for and there are no paper trails. I believe that at one point almost 1/3 of their spending went unaccounted for and the council members spend something like $10 million on travel related expensive. At that time oil revenues were still strong and the nation was generating around $100 million per year.
I understand the desire and need for the First Nations to be independent but the system really needs an overhaul and some intervention.

The only way you fix this is by scrapping the reservations. Can’t see it ever happening.
The cons brought in a bill that audited the reserves but dip #### JT scrapped it.

RIP to the little one. No matter the cause, heartbreaking to think that for one reason or another children have suffered. Hopefully, the situation is clarified soon.
