How is it a sucker punch when Smith threw the first punch?
You clearly need to see the replay again from the ice which shows the better angle. Smith slashes him in the leg then pushes him and Lucic gives him two pops in the face then another to the back of the head.

Yep. Lucic absolutley threw the first punches. Smith was defending Gio and wasn't defended in turn. No wonder he's upset.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. I love power.
Disagree. I have noticed him taking exception in the past, and having a few words, and it seemed to quickly calm the other team down. I don't remember much happening during the last Oilers-Flames game, however chippy it may be.
That's what dressing Stewart does. Besides, Lucic just suddenly becomes a big tough-guy when he knows there is nobody on the other team that can respond. I don't recall any of his big spazz-outs against teams with tough guys - Buffalo when he ran Miller, San Jose when he went after Couture (IIRC), etc. He has become such a spot-picker.
You bet your life that Stewart keeps him honest out there. I would love to keep playing against Lucic in Edmonton as he will give the Flames PPs, but I would hate to see someone get injured because of the stuff he does. The guy just goes 'nutty' sometimes, and he doesn't seem to have that code where he doesn't go after the other guy's star players like an enforcer never does.
I just haven’t seen it. Anyway, I wanted to like him but you can’t play him and expect to have any defence when he’s out. He really can’t play in his own zone. So any feistiness (which again I haven’t seen at all) comes at a huge cost.

You saw it the previous Oiler game when McDavid was knocked on his ass and no one did anything.

Didn’t Gio know Lucic cross checked him? He is a big boy
Some questions for consideration-
Has Smith thrown teammates under the bus a few times?
Has Smith been leading by example or underwhelming in 5 of the last 7?
Did Smith start something expecting his teammates to finish it?
I remember hearing from a guy who used to bounce about Vernon back in the days who used to like to start things when he went out and rely on guys like Roberts to keep him from getting his butt kicked
Maybe it’s a goalie thing. Maybe it’s a room thing.

Gary Roberts probably helped prevent a lot of friends and teammates over the years from getting their butts kicked. He was one of the toughest SOB's to wear the Flames jersey. If there's any type of player this team needs its a guy like Gary Roberts.

Out of the country so only just now saw the lucic - smith thing.
I don’t care if you’re johnny Gaudreau or gio or stone. As soon as someone goes hands on your goalie you engage. Every flame on the ice should have been wildly going after lucic and if need be, someone shoulda jumped the boards. I’m disappointed in the reaction. Smith is right to call out the team. I wish treliving would build a bully of a roster so this doesn’t happen. Ferland shoulda been taking liberties at mcdip#### the rest of the night. Forget the score, send a message.

Roberts was tough and courageous, but he was a middleweight, and more like a Matthew Tkachuk. He wasn’t a player who went out of his way to intimidate the opposition, and he did not play the enforcer kind of role you’re describing. But he would definitely join a scrum in defence of a teammate.

Take a look at this footage at around 1:16 mark (commentating starting around 45 seconds about the whack that Lucic had on Smith):
Lucic gives Smith a frickin huge whack as Smith stops the shot. Gio casually goes towards Lucic and everyone gathers around. This happened a few plays before the actual slashes which started the fights. I've never seen a team that allows anyone slash a goalie and get away with it. You can also see Brouwer coming in standing in between Lucic and Smith, but no retribution on that event. I just don't get that. Flames truly had the wrong players on the ice at that moment in time.
What pisses me off after the Smith/Lucic incident is that Foo served the penalty for Smith and the teams are playing 4-on-4. Why the hell did GG put Foo in the box to sit for Smith. With a 4-on-4, you'd want your offensive guys to try and score. I would've liked to see what Foo can do with Gaudreau in that situation.
Foo serving the penalty is just another example of the cluelessness of Gulatzan.
Yeah, I disagree with this. You're leading by a goal, and you know you're going to be facing McDavid and Draisaitl,
Foo is probably the last guy I want on the ice in that situation.
This isn't a video game.
In this case, putting players with better defensive awareness was the proper coaching decision.
Putting Foo on the ice, who's not fully up to speed with NHL defensive responsibilities would be silly.
we are out of the ####ing playoffs again. Let the young players learn and play while it doesn't ####ing matter. Next year nobody give a #### if we lose or win this game.

Chucky woulda gone with lucic. I have zero doubt about it. Wrap up arms and go to the ice
