This is one for old timers. It's on cracked's list
https://kotaku.com/the-surprising-an...rqu-1785741600
Quote:
“Although the guilds were killing each other all the time, we had agreed not to wake the Sleeper,” Jon remembered. It was their one pact, and not one made out of mutual respect: Once the Sleeper went on his rampage, players couldn’t farm his four warders for loot—powerful armor that protected the guilds from each other.
Really, though, all it takes to start an avalanche is one loose rock. As the story goes, a lizardman monk named Stynkfyst left the mega-guild Ascending Dawn and, with evident malice, decided to wake the Sleeper. Word got out on Rallos Zek that he would attempt it with his new guild, a collection of trollish small-fry EverQuest players called “The Curse.” It was a dishonorable quest, even by Rallos Zek’s moral code. The Curse needed to be stopped.
“The top guilds did not assemble their forces until word of Stynkfyst’s intentions had spread,” an account by EverQuest player Riduiz reads, “and it became clear that he intended to wake the Sleeper, forever preventing future guilds from farming the old loot table.” That’s when the guilds decided that they had to work together to either kill those rogue players or, if all else failed, wake the Sleeper.
|
Quote:
Players soon got an answer. With only a quarter of his health left, the Sleeper suddenly disappeared.
The three guilds stood there in awe. The Sleeper didn’t die, and he didn’t fly away. They had spent three hours on what was now an empty tomb. In the process, they lost multiple levels and thousands of experience points. It defied all known EverQuest precedent—all known MMORPG precedent, even. The Sleeper had despawned without a trace.
Enraged, players flocked to in-game Customer Support GMs. Jon still has a screenshot of his chat log with the GM Zaltaran, who told him something unfathomable at the time: that the despawning orders came from the top, Sony Online Entertainment.
|
Waking the Sleeper in itself was a huge jerk move, in a game predominantly PvE and progression based competing to be the top uber guild. Waking the Sleeper as the top guild would ensure that you would have a distinct weapon advantage against other guilds. The fact that a PvP server managed to keep the Sleeper awake for so long as a pacy was a feat in itself, until of course one guy with a mid end guild by that point decided to screw the rest of the server.

FFXI ate my mid twenties. Fracking game. swore off MMO's after that monster. AV was ruthless. Then they nerfed the game entirely. What an insult of four years of work when some noob walks in and max's out the level grind in a month. Nerfing the market, nerfing the cost of crafting. it all got so easy for new players. They really punched their long paying subscribers right in the junk.
Damn squenix.
I guess what I am trying to say is, FFXI was one of the biggest jerk moves ever. not just AV, but the game itself and the dumbing down of it just to get more subscribers.
Painful memories.

This is the wrong place to espouse this opinion considering that you have grown men playing a kids game and often investing more than 1000$ on equipment and ice time and events surrounding hockey. Let alone the reams of text dedicated to analysis of how to prevent goals and how to score goals. And that's not even getting into how intimidation plays a role in the morale of the group of players.
For many of the reader's here video games are similar to the rifle from this quote:
Quote:
A Story, A man fires a rifle for many years and he goes to war, afterwards he returns the rifle to the armories and he beliefs he is finishes with the rifle, but no matter what else he might do with his hands, love a women, build a house, or change his sons diaper, his hands remember the rifle

Not true at all. Back in the 80s and 90s the target audience was kids but now it's adults.

Back in the 80's sneakers were kids shoes, now they cost a fortune have magazines written about them and men line up around the block to buy some special edition Jordans.
I'll let you into a secret, they are still kids shoes its just the adults are large versions of kids now where as they used to be grown ups.

You're right these days but there used to be adults, my father in law was an adult, left home at 12 to break horses on ranches, rustled cattle across the line in the dirty thirties, joined the Calgary Tank Regiment, Dieppe, Italy then the Winnipeg Fire Dept, retired as a Lieutenant then drank himself to death, hell of a man.

I get that comparison but that still doesn't mean that saying all video games are kids games isn't false.
I don't see why still playing video games should make you less of an adult than someone who doesn't. You can still be a responsible mature adult and like to play video games in your free time. It's no different now than watching a movie except now it's interactive. Atleast that's how it is for me since I don't like multiplayer and no longer play the types of games I did as a kid which is why I have no interest in Nintendo.

AFC - your attitude reminds me of a quote from C.S. Lewis:
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

I suspect Lewis would have had a slightly different attitude towards men that seem to desperately not want to grow up at all, not feel the least discomfort or put their family first, to avoid the social mores of adulthood at all, its one thing to still like a few things from your youth, I still play soccer and like to go see a band, its intirely another to refuse to take on any of the trappings of adulthood at all, to live your whole life like a teenager.

Living your whole life as a teenager because you played video games? Says the guy going out of his way to a thread designed specifically for video games to try and start some weird fight. Can't get less adult than that.

Acutally, AFC, I suspect Lewis would look at you and say "this guy is exactly who I was talking about". Because he would certainly have picked up the irony of how childishly you are behaving in your effort to prove how much of an adult you are.

I mean you're in here ripping on video games and sneakers. It doesn't get much more "old man yells at cloud" than that.

You miss my point, playing video games and wearing sneakers doesn't make you a kid, thinking a video game is important enough to get mad about and that sneakers are a suitable choice of footwear for any occasion makes you a kid
And I don't yell at clouds, just the little bastards on my lawn

Wait. Forget that you're acting like a manchild for a second by deliberating going out of your way into a thread you do not have an interest in just for the sake of expunging you're silly diatribe.
You're on a Gosh darn message board about a team consisting of people you have no affiliation with, playing a game...that you've probably been emotional about in one way or another.
So getting mad at video games - childish.
Getting mad at sports games...not childish?
At least with the video games you could make the argument that you're at least somewhat invested as you play them yourself. Putting on your favourite jersey with your favourite players name on the back and watching a bunch of adults play a game, and then going on the internet to discuss the games and teams... one could easily make the argument that it doesn't get much childish than that. Unless of course you were wearing sneakers while doing so.
Of course, my argument is do what you want. I just can't believe you're taking issue with people playing video games. If this thread, and threads like this, don't interest you, don't open them. Have some self-control, like an adult.

Similar with Diablo 3. When it first came out, Act 2 on Inferno difficulty was notoriously difficult. It required actual skill and planning to succeed and was time consuming to get the right items to advance. Of course the general community cried that they couldn't complete it in an hour and it got nerfed. And then they did the same thing with Torment difficulties going up to 6 (and later 10) , to play in the highest Torment difficulty was suppose to be a challenge...but everyone complained so they made it easier. I never got it, if you just wanted to slay monsters quick and easy...why not stick to easier difficulties?
