Lowry, Hellebuyck, Copp
BT tried a new and novel approach, trading a bunch of picks for current help. To the best of my knowledge there has not been a GM who in 3 years has traded 2 1sts, a 2nd, 3 3rds and a 5th to miss the playoffs 2 out of 3 years and be the 15th best team and the 7th seed the one year they made the playoffs. I am not sure if there has been a GM who has traded away that many picks (net) over such a short period of time.

The Hamilton trade was worth it and it's a trade you do every time but this is the sort of trade a team like the Flames should be doing once every 5 - 10 years at the very most not every three years. I will never understand what film of Hamonic he and the pro scouts watched that sold them on the idea of going back to the well of trading a 1st and 2nds two years after doing it for Hamilton. I feel bad for Hamonic (because he gets dragged in the gutter) as he's a good character guy and a solid 2nd pairing guy but you simply don't give up a 1st and two 2nds for a 2nd pairing defenseman. Terrible trade and now I question if Treliving is really the right guy going forward for this franchise as he's getting careless with draft picks much like Darryl Sutter.

Succession of GMs showing impatience and trading away picks for short-term fixes. Time to recognize that the impatience this franchise demonstrates comes from higher up than the GM.

Bang on.
We've seen this script before. Whenever the Flames get close, they start chasing. They trade picks for players that can play now, they make questionable UFA signings.
I suspect this message comes from the very top down. Treliving probably was interested in Hamonic, but when the price came in he may have been told to get it done despite his recommendation.

Do you really know that for sure or do you badly want to believe that the owners and Burke dictated this trade rather than looking at the obvious? IMO the Hamonic trade has Treliving's fingerprints all over it. From what I can see since Treliving took over is that he really, really covets defensemen more than any other position and his philosophy seems to be that you build a winner out through the blue line. His two big trade acquisitions have been defensemen and he's also drafted a lot of defensemen over his tenure which is why the organization talent base is off kilter with a lot of defensive prospects and light on forward skill. Over that time he's drafted Tkachuk and Bennett with 1st round picks but has not really done much to address the lack of skill on the wings. IMO he's got a bit of Predators envy and is trying to build the team as they did with defense first and it's not working out especially when the team is coached to play a style more suited to an average lunch pale group of defensemen.

Strange way to attempt to distinguish Tre’s fingerprints. Burke believes strongly in building from net and defense out.

Treliving has stated exactly the same philosophy. Not a surprise that he was the only candidate Burke considered.

A GM can do a lot more longterm damage than a coach. Neither deserves more of a leash.

Treliving bargained hard last year in his contract negotiations to get full autonomy and got it so I'm finding it hard to believe he's making any decisions that he does not believe in just to appease Burke or the owners. I'm sure Burke makes suggestions and has input (Randy Carlyle interviewing for the head coach position last go around) but it certainly appears to me that Treliving is making the final decisions because I don't think Burke hires Gulutzan and I'm not sure if he makes the Hamonic trade.
I think some fans are really hoping that Treliving's hands are tied because then they don't have to accept that maybe he's just not a great GM. I'm not advocating he gets fired but he really needs to rectify the coaching situation and make the right hire the 2nd time because he's running out of excuses.

Burke and Treliving should be fired. Let the new management handle finding a new coaching staff.

Do you know this, or just speculating?
I don't recall this being reported & im certain those negotiations were kept quiet and confidential.

You have to give Chicago credit, usually you have to give up a draft pick to get rid of a bad contract, they actually got one back.
him passing through waivers and Calgary paying him 1.3 million a year to play in Stockton tells you everything you need to know about who won that trade.

It was reported on sportsnet. People were wondering why it took so much time for him to re sign with Cgy and then it was reported that Buffalo was also interested in Treliving and he was taking a long look at what they were offering him. They said (might have been Freidman) that he wanted more autonomy than what he was being given in Calgary or he wouldn’t sign. But hey, for all I know Elliotte could have been making it all up.

If Friedman reported it, it's likely pretty close to the mark.

So why have they not addressed the goal tending problem that the Flames have had for years?

There's that, but don't forget being afraid of Ortio hitting waivers. Ramo, their only goalie with a win that season so far was put on waivers after signing a brand new 3.8m contract.
Also, I've ranted enough about Sigalet, but he's still here somehow.

14-15 Playoffs
15-16 Missed
16-17 Playoffs
17-18 Missed
You give the management team another year. If they miss next year time to clean house.
