This whole take that the flames didn’t stand up for each other during that play is utterly ridiculous.
I was just staring in disbelief while the HNIC panel was discussing this. “I would have liked to have seen the Flames do more”
While a clip is playing of every guy on the ice flying into the scrum.
He was just pointing out that he’s got sympathy for Glass having a rough year and the thanks he gets is having his face pounded by Lucic. It had nothing to do with insulting his teammates.
Brouwer who is wearing a cage? Brouwer recovering from a facial fracture? That Brouwer? Oh yeah, good call.
Flames should trade for Reaves. Gives you serviceable 4th line minutes and strikes fear into the eyes of opponents. Get it done
I don’t love Reaves but I agree he can play a role on a good team. Interesting that LV got him and a 4th round pick for essentially nothing (retaining salary and a low level prospect).
It bugs me no end that Flames have been paying other teams to retain salary and have not once made good use of their extra cap space.
I would say the response from the team was rather tepid
but gotta give Brouwer credit
Yeah, they kind of came in quickly but not in a "he's punching our goalie" kind of way. It wasn't the end of the world, so don't take it the wrong way, but I tend to lean towards agreeing with Mike Smith's response after the game.

That’s crap. Watch the replay, everyone has their head turned to the play when Gio takes the slash. Smith was the only one who saw it and countered. Lucic got his shots in and it wasn’t until the whistle went and then the players turned around to see what was going on and you can literally see the guys come back as fast as they could to get at Lucic.
This notion that Lucic shouldn’t have got his three shots in is crap because the players had their heads turned focused on the play. The last thing they did was saw it and let it happen.
Take a look at this footage at around 1:16 mark (commentating starting around 45 seconds about the whack that Lucic had on Smith):
Lucic gives Smith a frickin huge whack as Smith stops the shot. Gio casually goes towards Lucic and everyone gathers around. This happened a few plays before the actual slashes which started the fights. I've never seen a team that allows anyone slash a goalie and get away with it. You can also see Brouwer coming in standing in between Lucic and Smith, but no retribution on that event. I just don't get that. Flames truly had the wrong players on the ice at that moment in time.
What pisses me off after the Smith/Lucic incident is that Foo served the penalty for Smith and the teams are playing 4-on-4. Why the hell did GG put Foo in the box to sit for Smith. With a 4-on-4, you'd want your offensive guys to try and score. I would've liked to see what Foo can do with Gaudreau in that situation.
Just a comment I forgot to make last night when I noticed it.
Seeing Hamilton how himself in front of the puck multiple times in the last 2 minutes while they were pinned in, despite playing what is basically a nothing game was awesome.

Even if the Flames had dressed an "enforcer" (Stewart or anyone else in the NHL) does anyone here actually think that Gulutzan could effectively line match that player against Lucic even with last change? Gulutzan has proven to be horrible with situational play and line matching.

Yeah, I disagree with this. You're leading by a goal, and you know you're going to be facing McDavid and Draisaitl,
Foo is probably the last guy I want on the ice in that situation.
This isn't a video game.
In this case, putting players with better defensive awareness was the proper coaching decision.
Putting Foo on the ice, who's not fully up to speed with NHL defensive responsibilities would be silly.

Glass wasn't out there by coincidence when he fought Lucic. Lucic never left the ice after getting out of the box and Glass and Hathaway hopped on right away.
Let's not get carried away with this. I'm all about retribution. The Flames, under Hartley, never got Ference back for bullying Stempniak into a fight and that sickens me. Here, Glass took care of it after. On the play itself, blaming anyone is silly, Lucic took his pot shots, the linesman stepped in, Lucic took another shot at Smith and Brouwer and Stone couldn't get to Lucic thanks to the officals. Flames went after him as soon as they could, and that is GG throwing the appropriate guys over the boards.

The guys were skating in there with "oh man, he is fighting our goalie; I better skate in his direction. Please, linesman, grab me, please, please, please" on their minds.

It was like a bar fight where all the guys surrounding "rush" to break it up but secretly no one wants to be the first one grabbing some big drunk dude, who's throwing punches every direction.
Also, on Hathaway’s goal, almost a Blades of Steel celebration. And, he skated right squarely in front of Talbot and stood there doing it. Intentional or not, fantastic.

You guys don’t know Mike Smith well enough if you don’t think those are harsh words for his teammates.
Personally I'm not a fan of players airing this out in the media. Say your peace in the locker room but don't embarrass your teammates in front of the media.
