Kypreos nailed the problem with this Flames team. They don't have each other's backs except for a few players.
Credit to Mike Smith for responding to Lucic's slash to Giordano and kudos to Tanner Glass for stepping up. But what about Giordano? What did he do besides look like he would rather be somewhere else? No one expects him to fight with Lucic but at least show some emotion and leadership. What about the other Flames players on the ice when Lucic was punching their goalie? There is no wolf pack mentality and there needs to be. That falls on the GM for the upcoming season.
I don't think it'll be suspension for punching McWhatever, a double minor for roughing for sure. If the league suspense the player, just show this clip and ask why.
My take is we are down our second best player (Chucky), our third best player (Mony) and we still beat the oil. We tried to defend our goalie, they got stopped by the refs. We sent out Glass, who shouldn't even be playing in the NHL, to take care of business. He did. The goon sat in the box for 5 minutes and we WON. Foo and Anderson looked good. We can now cut or trade TJ, Brouwer, Glass, Bart and Hathaway. Oh, Kulak is good, really good. We better keep him long term.

According to Willis, Steinburg and Loubardias after the game, Smith apparently had some harsh words for his team mates about the whole Lucic situation...anyone hear/see anything like that yet?

The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!

Hmmm...not sure he is criticizing team mates there as much as he is saying how tough it is for a guy in Glass's role, to be the the one that has to take a beating because there is no one else that can match Lucic in a fight. Yet it HAD to be done.
I would agree with him 100% on that too.

Smith was great tonight, thank god they beat the Oilers. Flames were .500 in games decided in regulation against the Oilers, I guess that is a silver lining.
I would say the response from the team was rather tepid
but gotta give Brouwer credit
Seeing it again makes some of the comments in this thread ridiclous. But that's not a shocker at all.
Gio was obviously stung, hunched over and by the time he turned around Lucic was already being pushed behind the next 10 feet from him with Stone trying to get past the linesman to get to him.
Gio still rushed back to the play and then everyone grabs someone while the refs try to break it all up.
Seems like standard fair at the very least, and certainly not an inditement on Gio, which was an asinine suggestion a few pages back.
Stone is also punching at two Oilers at the end.
A whole lot of much ado about nothing.

Smith absolutely right to call out the rest of the team. Wtf are they doing... same thing against Vegas with reeves. Yes they are scary guys but punch them in the face and let the linesman save you at bare minimum. Pussies

Did you not watch the clip above? No one is within five feet of that caveman when he starts swinging at Smith. As soon as he did, Stone is on him before the ref gets in the way and Lucic cuts behind to try to get back at Smith. Then Browuer comes in after him and two refs get between them.
Some of you are just out to lunch looking for another thing to whine about.

Good to see the Flames hang on for the win there. Didn't agree with the decision not to dress Stewart in the GDT, and the game reinforced that for me.
As for someone calling it a 'Staged fight' - that isn't a staged fight. That is Glass sending the Oilers and all the other teams in the NHL that you can't do that to a Calgary goalie and not expect to have to answer the bell. Feel really bad for Glass there, and I hope he is alright. I have to give him an ovation there for doing his job. Gulutzan missed the ball on that one I think, and tonight Glass paid the price for it.
Flames played a pretty decent game tonight. Backlund was back tonight - he really keeps McDavid in check, and the rest of the team did a good job the rest of the time. I didn't like to see Bartkowski on the PK (or Brouwer on the PP!!), but he did alright.
Don't agree with Kypreos - there was a scrum and a few Flames were trying to get at Lucic after that altercation. Smith was the guy on the team that wasn't going to let Lucic continue. Lucic started running around a few shifts before that and didn't stop, finally slashing Giordano. Smith took it upon himself to do something about it, and it was good to see (though I didn't enjoy seeing Lucic swinging at Smith). I thought the team rallied from that a bit.
I think it sucks, but for as long as that idiot Lucic is in Edmonton, Calgary has to have some type of a player that can nullify his stupid shenanigans. He has a history of going off and doing stupid things, and you don't want to enter a BoA scared of what may happen. For those that don't remember, things were pretty damn grim until a guy called Tim Hunter came up and started taking care of guys like Semenko, McSorely and Brown. Fortunes changed for the Flames after that. Different era, but all you have to see is Lucic's antics in the past (i.e. against Buffalo in which he basically exposed that team for being spineless, and everything just kind of went off the rails for them after that). Some people just think you turn the other cheek and take the power play, but sometimes things get out of hand and you just need a response.
Either way, fun game to watch, and the good guys won again. I hope this is the start of a LONG win streak against that embarrassing organization that can't stop congratulating itself for accomplishments made 30 years ago....
Here is the Oilers' organization every 10 minutes:
They might as well hire Barry Horowitz to their management team - he knows a thing or two about patting yourself in the back if there was any doubt.
