Flames will very likely offer Kane $6 million per season IMO.
They need proven offensive wingers and he is definitely that, and he also has size and toughness to go along with it. He also happens to be just 26, which is fairly young for a UFA.

Kane already makes close to $6M. He'll get a raise.
San Jose can offer him 8 years at at least $6M.
Flames need to make up for the additional money he'd earn in that extra year the Sharks can offer him.

I totally understand the rational behind what it would take but that's a long time and a lot of money to be married to him. Its a contract year and there's probably a reason he's producing and such right now. If you look at his track record what is there to say he's gonna be a good value at 7 Million?

I'm not suggesting the Flames go after him. The opposite actually. I'm in agreement that it will cost the Flames too much over too long to be worth considering.

He can be a Shark for 8 seasons IMO. That's just too much money and term for a winger that isn't elite. He's got the tools to be an elite winger but he's never put it together and I just don't see him as a guy a organization can count on for a long term

2017/2018 Trade Speculation and Rumors
I’d happily offer Kane 7 years at 6.75M, but I just don’t see him making free agency.

You look at his career numbers and track record and you can justify that?

Even if we believe he was worth it for his on-ice performance, I think I would stay away from him for his off-ice issues. I'm not saying we need all character guys, but he's taken it to an extreme.
In 2012 when he was accused of not paying his tabs at restaurants and bars, there was also the very prominent story of how he got his concussion in an alleged bar incident.
In 2013, he had to apology for a homophobic tweet.
In 2014, he was sued for financial damages for assaulting a bar patron.
In 2016, he was investigated (though not charged) for sexual assault, the woman would eventually sue him for bodily harm.
Later in 2016, he was arrested and charged for assaulting three woman and a bouncer at another bar.
Nothing may have been proven in court, but he's pretty much the definition of "where there's smoke." And has long been reported to be a dick everywhere he goes.
And that's overlooking hockey issues, like his teammates throwing his jumpsuit into the shower, multiple healthy scratches and benches and multiple fights with teammates.
Four women have accused him of assault, including rape. Even if he was never found guilty, I'd be pretty disappointed if the Flames brought him in to the organization.

Kanes on ice worries me more than his off ice. Can he stay motivated and perform at a high level for the next 6-7 years? Basically needs 25+ goals and 50+ points a season during that time to justify the deal. I'd like to sign him because he would address a need but I feel like the money might be better spent on someone else. I just see him as a guy who has potential to be good but also the type of guy who will lose motivation if things aren't going well and this team already has enough of that.

Signing Kane to big money is a risk but this team won’t get better at forward without taking a chance. I have seen enough low risk signings for a while now. There is little evidence to support the current organization can identify diamonds in the rough. Lazar, Shinkaruk, Lack, Bartkowski, Jagr, Stewart, Class, Chiasson. The list of misses is long.

With the way Kane has been performing in San Jose, I don't see why the organization wouldn't want to re-sign him and why Kane wouldn't want to stay. He doesn't make it to free agency. I don't think that San Jose is going to balk at his contract demands unless they are really crazy. He has (thus far) really fit into that lineup perfectly. I just don't see why both sides wouldn't want to continue that beyond this season.

I think there's a bit of bias with Kane with his recent performances against the Flames. Other than those games, he has not produced like a 7.5 M dollar player:
Vs CGY
2 games 6 goals 0 assists
Vs everyone else since the trade to SJ
13 games 3 goals 5 assists => .61 pts/game
People are complaining about Backlund's new contract due to "underpeforming offensive numbers", though he's still at .53 pts/game. How can you rationalize giving 2+ more million per year for a winger with barely better offensive numbers?

Did those 6 goals against Calgary not happen?
Excluding them to come up with .61 pts/game is beyond silly.

Let's not forget SJ has to give up their first to sign him. Main reason I really don't get all the praise for that trade. SJ ain't winning the cup IMO.

That does not mean we should pay him that.
Should we have offered up more than the Oilers for Lucic? It's okay to not 'win' every UFA bidding war.

Just saying that is the price...What Gaudreau earns is irrelevant. If the Flames want to improve they may have to "overpay" someone. Skilled RWers don't grow on trees.
Get rid of Brouwer and you are more than half way there

The only way this team (or any team) will get anywhere is through the draft
The Flames do not draft well enough or often enough to expect to be a consistent playoff team
Going hard for FA’s puts teams over the top, and as seen this season, this team is nowhere near good enough for that yet
