Everyone of us has to try to do our part to keep customer service and friendliness on the up. I try to do the odd thing here and there to let people know the world isn't full of jackasses.

It's like this in Edmonton as well. I think the entire province is having this same problem. Everyone is hiring and it is true that you can pretty much walk into any restaurant or store and get hired on the spot. My sister is one of the most unreliable people on earth and she walked into Rick's Grill and got a job on the spot and started work the next day. She has missed several days of work b/c she's too hung over (or stoned) to go in and they still haven't fired her! Like someone else said, customer service is not a priority anymore .. keeping workers is.
My friend and I went to Bp's last weekend for nacho's and were told there would be an 45 minute to one hour wait on our food .. we were only getting nacho's!!

Unfortunately I don't see it getting better anytime soon ... guess we just have to suck it up if we want to live here.

My wife forks as a supervisor at a bix box retailer and they are so short of staff, that basically if you are breathing and have a heartbeat you'll get a job and keep it. They are having such a hard time getting staff and keeping staff.
That is so true and hilarious. Me and a friend laugh constantly about a other friend of ours who has lost 3 jobs over the past 10 months. The guy has been "laid off" or fired 3 times, in Calgary.

You know you're an ###### up when...

Ha ha. I guess it did come across that way. But still, it is odd. We hear (and see) homeless people constantly in this city. Two organizations that help them don't even want donations. Do they have too much stuff? Maybe they can't hire drivers. That's probably it.

A year or two ago the Goodwill people (I think it was them) phoned me asking if I had stuff for them.

I would never give away junk. I'm very selective with the stuff I don't want anymore.

The wife and I have been talking about the poor service for some time now. We both agreed it isn't worth it to get worked up over. When we go out we just assume the service will be sub par, good service = good tip, bad service = no tip, easy as that.
As far as retail stores go what is the point of complaining, it falls on deaf ears. I know it isn't right to have to "settle" but really what are you going to do about it. No ones gives a s**t anymore

My wife and I have said the same thing.

I also make a point of reiterating my thankfulness when someone DOES give me good service.

Agreed, rico. So many restaurant type places are staffed with overwhelmed teenagers. Tough to have patience, but you have to know how much it sucks for them as well. I don't see it getting better any time soon.

Anyone else been told it's a 20% tip now, not 10-12%?

What, now I have to tip MORE for your crap service?

Pshaw! Who said that? Good service gets 20 but that's it. If my tab comes to a hundred bucks and the service was terrible, there is no way I'm giving that person 20 bucks.

no I was serious actually. My wife and I are willing to give them perfectly good stuff that we can't use and they are basically laughing at us

what gives?

your driver theory is a good one

That philosophy doesn't fly with me.

To
Insure
Proper
Service

I tip 15% for good service and 20% for service that exceeds my expectations. If the service sucks then the tip goes down accordingly and I try to tell the server or manager that I wasn't satisfied with the service and that the low (or no) tip reflects that. I've gotten a lot of attitude from those who didn't earn themselves a good tip but they need to realize that a tip is not automatic.

Forum, meet the resident cheap Irishman.

Cheap Irishman, meet the rest of the forum.

I've talked to many a waitress who've mentioned that 20% in the city is now standard. $7 beers now constitute a $2 tip....

If you invest somehow in the city (real estate, stocks, whatever) so you benifit from the growth, the crappy service doesn't seem quite so bad...

It still sucks though.

Oh yeah, that's another thing that's starting to chap my hide. Everything is so frickin expensive now. I went for beers the other day, and during "happy hour" a pint of Kieths was $5.50. How is that happy? They should rename it "run a tab you'll regret in the morning hour". Regular hour is now known as "Holy Moly you're getting raped hour".

Laugh. Well I won't deny that I'm a cheapskate, but I would/do tip 20% if the service is good, but I'm not ponying up 20% for someone who either can't or won't do their job properly.

"Hmm, you brought me the wrong beer 15 minutes after I ordered it and the food is cold. Job well done! Here's a big tip!"

I can't do it.

And I will give a $2 tip on a $7 beer if the situation is right. But to expect it, no way.

My standard is 15%. I go up to 20% if the service is good, and usually don't go below 10% if the service sucks. One thing I've seen; many people used to do "double the GST" to figure out 14%, and just the other day I had to correct a buddy who was going to leave 12% for a waitress who did an awesome job. We left her 20%- or just over $40. I can imagine the waitress who started to serve us but had a bad attitude and turned us over was probably ticked.

I would say yes.
i think with the amount of money floating around right now, you could easily charge a premium for a good, quality serive.
personally i have stopped shopping at places like walmart and safeway in favour of more expensive, but less busy and higher quality service establishments.

As someone who has washed dishes and worked as a line cook as a young man, I can tell you waitresses never share the tips.
