Top Skylines in the World
http://necromanc.blogspot.com/2006/03/top-18-skylines-in-world.html
All my years in studying Urban Planning helped me grow a greater appreciation for the dense downtown skyline of the big city. The downtown core of big cities across the Americas, Europe and Asia are the cultural pulse and economic engines of urban regions where millions of people live. All urban "life" begins and ends, each day and night under the watch of the city's tallest skyscrapers and most grand architectural structures. So kick back and appreciate the view that they have to offer...
http://www.diserio.com/top15-skylines.html
http://homepages.ipact.nl/~egram/skylines.html
This list is an attempt to rank the impressiveness of city skylines. The score of a city is equal to the sum of all building heights (in m, without spires) after substraction of the minimum of 90m/295ft for each building. Freestanding towers (i.e. thin structures with no floors over most of their height) count for half their height.
Calgary is # 48.

quirky list
I'm curious if Calgary has (possibly by far?) the smallest metropolitan area population of those on the list?
edit:erm I see if I actually click on the links they list the metro pops at least for the top 30(on the Diserio list)...Panama City only 700K, then there are a couple Dubai etc around 1.4 (but some of these don't make the list where Calgary appears)

Impressive lists. Still haven't been to Hong Kong but would love to experience it.
Where's Edmonton?

Meh .. who cares. I'd be the first to admit that Edmonton doesn't have an impressive or "lovely" skyline but really, who does? I don't find big city skylines to be all that nice.
If a person wants impressive .. go to the Rocky Mountains or some other naturally beautiful spot. Why waste time getting all gaga over manmade ugliness? .... So much beauty in the world and people are busy comparing skylines

The Petronas twin towers or KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Central) is amazing. The first few floors merges the 2 buildings together, and the first 4 floors is a shopping mall. It's amazingly impressive. You have to see to believe.

Yep it looks like the view from when you go up that 45 degree angle cable car and then there is that walk around the top of the hill. It's a beautiful spot no doubt and I enjoyed going there a lot.

My sister inlaw works in the tallest building in HK on the 85th floor. It's the one on the left with the bright light at the top.
It was such an awesome view. too bad we went in the day time. It took us like 25 minutes to get through security and they had to make these ID cards for us. hehe.
Warning. Dont' goto HK in the summer. I was there in late October and it was still 30c. You walk out of the shower and you are sweating. In the summer you are sweating in the shower!

yeah, I lived in HK when Angelina Jolie filmed Tomb Raider2 there - Watched the filming from a block or two away - that's the building Lara Croft jumped off in her flying squirrel suit

Each has their own qualities. The natural beauty of mountains, oceans, etc. are definitely impressive.
But that doesn't take away from the beauty of the skylines pictured in the links.

Oh jeesh, now you have to make me feel bad
No I don't think any architect is wasting their time, and do find that there are many very impressive manmade structures that obviously take much intelligence and talent to design. I was commenting b/c shockingly someone had to bring up Edmonton in this thread and the fact that it wasn't on the list.
Maybe the reason I haven't been impressed with skylines is due to the fact that I've personally only seen the skylines of Calgary, Edmonton, and several western US cities and I can't say that any of them have blown me away (kinda boring overall). Maybe I need to travel abroad to have that happen.

LOL but it's nice when you have the swimming pool on the top floor and are looking out over the harbor. I stayed at some hotel like that the last time I was there(Harbor View hotel -something like that --can't remember the whole name). Plus a cruise out to one of the islands in summer is awesome!!!

Yeah, Sao Paulo is an absolute confusing mess. You can be anywhere in that city and everywhere you look every building is like 10 stories, and they all look the same, and have air conditioners hanging out of every window.

It's not that bad if you stay in air-conditioned areas at all times. I just spent the entire August there and the worst days I've had were Disneyland and Ocean Park. The rest of the time were spent in shopping malls and cabs lol. Couldn't stand the sardines in the subway after the first day, if anyone thought the C-train during rush hour was bad give HK's subway a try
