Basically one playing season to decide and for us to know, as his decision next off season is basically saying "I'm signing with you now" or "I'm going to free agency in spring".

Can't say I'm surprised. Hopefully we keep him and he signs after completing his degree.

And that's the thing, if he's committed to going back to school for a third year over signing with us it starts to look pretty clear that he's intent on all four years and getting a degree (which makes total sense when it's Harvard).
And unfortunately for us, getting a degree is means about 95% chance he's going to free agency. I know many are optimistic but I see our best bet with Fox is a trade this summer.
There'll be no option for a good return next off season if he announces he's going back as teams pretty much know they're trading for nothing.

I am often mystified at how people interpret such highly generic statements. I don't see how Fox's brief comment can be construed as anything but carefully worded—it doesn't seem especially promising or otherwise.

You're not getting a meaningfull return for him either way without having him under contract. It's either toss him into a mediocre trade a la Hickey or hang on and hope the player is as irrationally loyal as Jankowski.
College players are as risk-reward as Russians. Perhaps bigger since Russians don't get to choose NHL teams.

I don't think you're getting the moon, but you're certainly getting more this off season than next, and imo he's still way more valuable than Hickey was. I doubt he'll be a toss in to a mediocre trade.
I could see him being a chip that pushes a major trade over the top, but not the main piece.

I don't think he's much of a trade chip at all. He's unsigned and if he's traded, he's still an unsigned college player. There's no guarantee he signs with any team and if a team the now they have a good shot at signing him, they can just wait until he's a UFA and sign him then. Would the Flames trade for an unsigned college player who might not sign with them at all or would they just wait and sign him without giving up assets?
They really need to fix this loop hole so teams aren't losing good prospects for nothing.

I mean this respectfully Cali, so please don't take it the wrong way. But it's all the little things that add or take away from discourse on this site, and you had a very long winded plea for better discourse and more meaningful discussion.
As someone who just posted a possibility of this being a turning point (albeit a slightly negative take) in what we do with Fox as an asset backed up with reason, your blanket, drive by remark is quite annoying and it's this style of post that takes away from discourse.
And I don't necessarily mean the intent of what you're saying but how you're saying it. It's not quality, you're preaching quality.
The worst thing on this site imo is these exact types of drive by's, it's meant to take a "side" of a debate and dismiss everyone on it as silly. Whether intended or not that is exactly what you are doing. It takes away from the quality which you pleaded for.
Just pick individual posts and respond with reason if you think you're reading something silly, what you did just gets backs up and takes away from the site.

Far, far more high-end picks that go to college play three seasons and then sign than do anything else.

Doesn't change my out look at all.
He's still likely to stay in Calgary then go four years.
No worries.

He's clearly invested in his post-secondary education. If I were Fox, I would complete my Harvard degree (he's paying for it after all) and then take my pick of destinations in free agency.

not too bothered by this. Either he signs after next season or they trade him like they did with Hickey.

He’s one of the most NCAA’s most productive point-men, having piled up 28 points — six goals and 22 helpers — in 29 collegiate clashes as a sophomore. Fox was feted earlier this month as a first-team conference all-star in the ECAC.
“I think it went pretty well,” Fox said of his second season at Harvard, where he’s working on a psychology degree with a minor in economics. “For me, trying to play more of a 200-foot game was one of my focuses coming into this year, and I think I’ve done a good job of that. I’ve been relied on for the penalty-kill. I’ve been blocking a lot more shots. For me, I know the offensive production will be there, but I’m trying to really take it to the next level and round out my full game into being a 200-foot player.
“And there are still some strength-aspects, skating aspects, that I still want to work on.”

Earlier this week, Harvard’s leading scorer — U.S. Olympian Ryan Donato — skipped out on his senior year to sign with the Boston Bruins.
“Losing Ryan for next year is a tough one, but I think we’re going to be a pretty well-rounded team,” Fox said. “We were getting a lot of production out of our freshmen and sophomores this year, and that’s good to see. Obviously, those guys will have to step up a little more. And personally, I want to step into more of a leadership role, kind of carry that weight with me and just keep improving my game. Obviously, it’s a big summer to get stronger, quicker, work on my shot a bit. So those are definitely some aspects I’m looking to improve on.”
