The guy had a tremendous work ethic on and off the ice during his career, has been a clutch player in the playoffs, played in 4 Stanley Cup finals and has won a cup. I don't think you get rid of a guy like that.

So you’re saying he knows a thing or two about winning?

This proves you're just a kid. Gelinas is well respected in these parts and around the leauge. The man was a beast in the playoffs.

Sure but what has he brought to the Flames in his 4+ years of coaching with this team?

We need a fresh restart from all the coaching staff, Marty included.

Shuffle him into a fitness role or something if they want to keep him in Flames Org but he can't be on the next coaching staff.

What does that have to do with being a good coach? best player ever was a terrible coach.

I was in my 20s in 04 and am a life long Flames fan so don't start giving me lectures about past seasons.

Because I'm in favour of keeping Gelinas around I have the mentality of the "old boys club" up north? Is this what you are insinuating?

I think we should keep him around because he knows what it takes to get to the playoffs and he is famous for his work ethic off the ice, which is an asset. Whether you keep him as an assistant or something else, the young guys have and will benefit from his knowledge.

Its just a joke...your comment was almost word for world what Oilers management have said about all their glory day hires

(So you’re saying he knows a thing or two about winning?)

comment was also poking fun at that

Anyway, yeah maybe he can fit somewhere but the point remains...he gets a pass when the rest of the coaches need police escorts out of town

Gelinas contributed in multiple cities and didn’t just chip in to a dynasty

You both have points but neither are Superman or bulletproof

Johnny and Tkachuk are who they should build around. Anybody else can go in the right deal. I'd move big enough pieces that those remaining know that the country club atmosphere is done.

Yeah #### gelinas. Purge the entire coaching staff and start fresh.
Get rid of burke and let tre know he's on thin ice.
Keep Johnny, Sean, Matt, Dougie.
Trade everyone else that can get you substantive value for. I'm ok keeping around guys like lazar and hamonic (low cost, play with heart) but don't go out of our way to hang onto them. If someone is willing to shell out big assets for gio or Backlund we should go for that too but I don't think we're that lucky.

I can see the removal of the main coaching staff, but, with respect to the recent posts here, what does Gelinas do?

I think Treliving deserves to be on a very short leash. The failure to address the need for forward scoring really stands out after the Tkachuk injury. And why get Nick Shore, if he’s not worth playing? I wouldn’t trade Bennett. At this stage he’s a solid 3rd to 4th liner energy player, and has potential for significant improvement in scoring. Same with Lazar.

Defense: keepers are Giordano (contract probably makes him untradeable), Hamilton, Hamonic, Brodie. Getting rid of Brodie now would probably be selling when you get the least value for him - he might recover with new coaching staff.

.

I don't get the thing about a former player who did well in the playoffs being a good coach or knowing what it takes to be there. The guy would know what it takes to be there as a player so unless he's playing he's useless. Lots of guys have been to the playoffs as a player and lots of guys have scored big goals in their lives, that doesn't mean they have what it takes to be a good coach.

Mike Babcock only played university hockey, WHL and some hockey in the UK...what the heck does he know about winning in the NHL when he couldn't even make the canucks?!

Gelinas was a good player and I"m sure he's an amazing guy but he's shown that he isn't a good coach...at least not for this team. If they keep him in the organization in some other capacity that's fine but he clearly shouldn't be coaching. It's just not working out.

If the coaching staff goes, they should all go. Sigalet seems to have avoided the axe thus far and should probably be let go as well.

Johnny, Tkachuk & Hamilton are the only players I wouldn't trade.
Anyone else could be gone at the right price and many for any price.

Having said that, trading away most of the team without seeing what a new coach can do with them is the wrong move.
Get rid of the obvious dead weight, strengthen the bottom 6 and find a top RW if possible and give that team to a new coach to start next season.
