Reading some post game comments, I'm sort of expecting to see Iggy's old "we'll have to run the table" make an appearance

Like pretty much any type of analysis or stats there will always be outliers.
14/15 Flames were an example of that. Chemistry, style, coaching, penalty differential (took fewest and drew lots) and at times pure luck (last minute comebacks) overcame the “stats”.
17/18 Flames are the other end of that spectrum. Poor coaching and leadership, piss poor special team, too many penalties, and a piss poor shooting percentage (Same team shot 1.3% higher last year or ~33 goals YoU).
IMO what’s more annoying is the fact that somehow with this fan base outshooting the other team has become a bad thing. And somehow this team magically takes shots that are worse than the other team, while the other team scores goals on “higher quality” shots from the point that bounce off two guys from the blue line then go in.
It’s a #### season. Part of it poor coaching, part of it on a lack of scoring depth on the roster, and as much as people here don’t like to admit a bit of bad luck too.
|
You can shoot 6 million shots a game for 82 games a season and rank 24th in the league in goals for per game, Flames proved it, know why? because they don't set up, there's no bodies in the shooting lanes to bounce pucks off of twice on the way to the net. It is BAD coaching and bad systems. And yes high volume shot generation is a BAD thing!
They don't get those bounces because no one is near a rebound or in a lane. Only to be there regularly is Tkachuk. Guess what? it was working with his 24 goals.
28 shots a game into a goalies tummy isn't good hockey. It's bad hockey, end of story.

This is a total team failure but you don't cast away anyone under 24 IMO.

You probably know more about evaluating long term talent and development than me. I just go by what I see on the ice. And what I see in Bennett is a guy who has busted for a Fourth overall pick. Bad hockey sense, dumb untimely penalties, and no finish. Janko: soft. Not a great nose for the net. Soft defensively. That’s what I see and that is what the numbers bear out. Next year? Not sure. But I don’t see it.

They could run the table, but still need a hand of god to come down and smite those they're chasing. And god's busy i hear.

Totally disagree. Gio is getting older, sure. But he's still an elite Norris-caliber defenceman, and easily among the top 10 in the league at his position. You don't just get rid of a guy like that.

I might be over-paraphrasing, but essentially yes. The players wanted to "get one back on the next shift", but GG said they ended up making sloppy mistakes that led to the next goals. If they had stuck to the system, they had time left to tie the game.
I was listening to the pregame show on the drive home from work about 7pm to 730pm (Mountain Time) today. I remember they also interviewed Gio who said a similar thing.
It should be on their archives.

If it was him with the C instead of Giordano, you can bet it would be mostly his fault for the lost season.

Yeah, I'm really not sure you're seeing Janko properly like at all. You must take into consideration that as an NCAA player and a one and a quarter season of AHL, he just has not seen game volume like an NHL season. He'll be just fine moving forward.

The only truly Untouchables for me are Gaudreau and Tkachuk. I listen to everything else and am selling at 80 cents on the dollar in some cases.

That was one of the worst games Johnny has played...a missed assignment on the first goal and not getting the puck in deep for the third goal. It would have looked less obvious if he just drove GG to the airport.

Haha... yeah, I think the difference is that with the "Young Guns", there was never any hope. With this team expectations were high. I still think the team has a lot of potential with a completely different coach. I understand there'll be some changes, and I just hope Treliving has a good grip on the team. I still like Bennett and Jankowski, and think those two with Monahan, Tkachuk, Gaudreau and our back-end (mostly) is a pretty good core. Honestly I think the only major move I'd like to see is for a top line RW, and a completely new coaching staff. I don't think anything needs to be blown up.
Ironic though, this team would be amazing with an in prime Iginla

I purposely did not watch this game. I will not watch another Flames hockey game with Glen Gulutzan as head coach. Whether that is 2 games (I hope!), 9 games, or 90 games (help us if he stays onboard), I refuse to watch such a poor brand of boring hockey. I wouldnt mind a boring defensive minded team if it meant the Flames are winning, the problem is they are boring and bad at the same time.

Hope you’re right. I do. I see a talent deficit. People
Said the same thing about Bennett and here we are, three years later and he is basically bre-x in terms of return.

Just gonna disagree with all of that as well.
how about we re-visit this conversation next year. I want to see what Bennett and Janko can do under a better coach on the Flames.

I'd go all in on Tavares, any way possible.
A lot of dead space after the first line. Having two guys that can carry their own lines would be important and pay dividends. And more than that, two duos that you could lean on in Gaudreau-Monahan and Tkachuk-Tavares. Whole lot better than living and dying with the first line's output.
Can't go wrong with two top tier centers, it's worked out for the Pens.

Is there a point on keeping the coaching staff through the rest of this year? I'd be happy to see Gelinas and Connie behind the bench at this point. The players might even put in a solid effort for those guys.
They have clearly quit on GG.
