He’s average. I would give him another year at least. Most of my venom comes from his coaching choice and the lack of entertainment value due to the system they play. If he can get AV or Quenville all is forgiven. He’s been decent but he’s undermined his own success with poor goaltending the first few years and more recently coaching.

If the Flames manage to make the playoffs this season (definitely a decent chance still) and make some noise by say beating Nashville or Vegas, would that change the outlook on what Treliving has done?

Honest question. Curious what people think.

May as well ask “what if they win the cup?” as the odds of them making the playoffs are low let alone beating a top seed in the first round. Take a look at Toronto to see the disparity between the management and coaching in these two organizations. Treliving is merely a good GM and Gulutzan a very, very average coach. The plight of the two teams just goes to show what better management and coaching can achieve. Now I realize the Flames weren’t going to pay $50 million on a head coach but this organization really needs a top tier coach as the Hartley’s and Gulutzan’s of the world simply aren’t good enough if you have aspirations of becoming a cup contender.

The first few years the team was coming off a 77 point season and just starting the rebuild. The stop gap goaltending was fine given that situstion and we made playoffs 2/3 seasons anyways. Not to mention options were limited. Glad we avoided Bishop.

I would agree coaching seems poor. This team has blamed a lot of coaches in recent memory though so I guess the ultimate test will come if we can land one of these big names.

EE I get your point and regardless of the outcome this season I expect to see more progress next year.

I am curious as to your Toronto comparison though given that they have achieved very little to date to separate them from Calgary. We'll see what happens in the playoffs but are they really that much better than the Flames in the big picture? It will take a few seasons to really see.

On pace for over 100 points and home ice advantage in the first round. Two things this organization hasn’t done for a long time. Some posters here may not even been alive the Flames had their last 100 point season. I think the rosters are comparable but coaching in particular isn’t remotely close.

100 points, yes but can't see TO catching Boston for home ice.
Also Flames did that in 05-06 so I would expect most posters here were alive. They lost in the first round to Anaheim like I expect Toronto to do to Boston or Tampa this year.

I still would rather have Babcock than GG obviously, but I guess I'm just struggling to see how much better the leafs are. Maybe we need to see what plays out over a few seasons

This team is mediocre just like its record indicates. This team isnt a cup contender. If we had our own picks in this years draft, then there would at least be an upside to this season. Who cares if we make the playoffs. It will be a sweep or a quick elimination in any event. Hows is this team gonna improve for next year? Is GlueGun back? Are we gonna have a reliable backup goalie? Are we gonna get some more offensive pieces? The draft isnt gonna help us.

Treliving gets love around for his wheelin and dealin. Hey thats great and all but what about the product on the ice and the position in the standings. If thats the measuring stick then this team is a failure especially if the expectation is that were a cup contender. If the expectation is that were a mediocre team that has a mathematical chance of a playoff spot in the spring, then Treliving is your guy.

The flames management will be shredded by the media should they fail to make the playoffs, as they should.

Classic Brian Burke MO of trading high picks way too soon in a rebuild.

In a year where the flames needed to gain more public favour with the city and fans, instead they've created a boring team that completely sucks at home.

I'd be shocked if we don't see significant heads roll this offseason, and rightfully so in my opinion.

This take feels a little over the top.

The Flames have a strong group of prospects largely in thanks to good drafting that Treliving did with excess picks he acquired over the years. He took over a team literally after it was stripped down and got them to the playoffs in 2 of his 4 seasons with potential for a third.

Should have he tanked for more years? Would we be way better off with Makar over Valimaki or Barzal over Hamilton? Would the 13th pick in the draft hep this team win before Gaudreau is a UFA?

The Flames can go to the draft with one of the most coveted pieces on the market as they will have a RHD they can move for a forward/cap space/picks etc.

I hope Treliving is smart and moves on from Gulutzan and gets a veteran coach in place that will build an identity for this team.

Some fans need to take a step back and relax. They expect the team to go from 77 points to cup contender in 4 years. I don't think the Hamonic trade necessarily signaled that Treliving thought we were a contender but more so was a move to help try and push the team forward while we still have our core together. He had 3 years on his deal at a low cap hit so I'm sure he saw the move as something that helped immediately and helped as the team grew together. If we miss this year whoever the Islanders pick likely isn't going to be an immediate help, maybe not for a while, and maybe never. The window didn't close this year I feel like it just started to open.

The team is still set up to be good moving forward. Gulutzan and his staff are likely gone. Stajan gone. Brouwer good chance bought out. We should have guys like Valimaki, Andersson, Dube, Mangiapane, etc all trying to make the team. Hopefully guys like Tkachuk, Jankowski, Bennett, etc are able to take a step forward. I'm sure Treliving will try and make a trade for some scoring depth. A top 6 winger is likely top of his list. With some injected youth and maybe a signing in the bottom 6 that should help the depth. Obviously not everything will pan out but I still see optimism with this team. A mid first round pick likely isn't going to decide the fate of this organization moving forward.

Yea, too bad we did not win the lottery. Thats the key to good management.

...well, to win the lottery you'd first need a lottery ticket, which we don't have because our management traded ours away thinking we won't need it.

Lol, we’re all freaking out over like 1% of a chance. Give it a rest.

No ones freaking out, but our current position in the standings would give us an 8.8% chance of a top 3 pick. That's not nothing either.

Disagree. There's people who mention it every single time, as if there (a) wasn't another side to the deal who didn't want a protected pick, (b) like a non-PO spot was a likelihood (who here thought so?) and (c) a tiny percentage that the Flames move up.

Pulling the trigger on the Hamonic deal without lottery protecting the pick could turn out to be a catastrophe. When you’re a bubble team, why on earth take that chance?

Tre thought this team was a bubble team without Hamonic, and a division contender with him.

So ... hubris. It's called hubris.
