Default Best worst contracts in the NHL

https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/1495655

1. Zach Praise
2. Carey Price

14. Troy Brouwer
Brouwer#doesn't give the#Flames#anything, really, but $4.5 million isn't ridiculous money, and this deal can be#disposed of fairly easily.#Grade: 6/10

I'd rank Bobby Ryan and Looch ahead of Carey Price.

Price can still play.

All of that is wrong except Brouwer not giving the Flames anything. That's huge money for nothing and no it can't be disposed of easily or it would be gone. Who the hell wrote that?

We'll be buying Brouwer out, which I guess in terms of paperwork will be easy, if that's what they meant?

That is what they meant - If you click the hyperlink it takes you to what a buyout of Brouwer would look like on capfriendly.com.

Oh, well then. But still, I wouldn't classify a buyout as being disposed of easily. Leaving any money on your cap for guys not playing is horrible in a league where every penny counts.

Sure, but have you seen the other players on this list? Compared to contracts like those for Parise, Ericksson, Lucic (hahaha!), Ryan, Seabrook et al. Brouwer's is at least palatable.

Brouwer's contract won't be a big hindrance until probably the 2019-20 season when Tkachuck, Ferland, Bennett and possibly Jankowski need new deals. This screw up can be disposed of by then at only a $1.5M hit over 2 years which isn't too bad.

Lucic's contract though should scare any team. The cap hit itself isn't obscene, but it's buy out proof. He receives so much money in signing bonuses that a buy out doesn't do much in terms of cap savings. No GM outside of Chiarelli should touch it.

I bet Brad will "fix" his Brouwer signing long before that. He's likely starting to get desperate to make this a playoff team sooner than later and will require that cap space (or whatever's left after a buyout) to upgrade our scoring.

Yeah they're not calling the Brouwer contract a good contract. Or even OK. They are saying it is bad.

Wow....Milan Lucic is only 29? He looks like he needs one of those walkers with the tennis balls on them!

I assumed that Looch was at least on the wrong side of 30. His game has just fallen off a cliff...

So, serious question, if you go back to the signing threads for each of these contracts, how many of them were filled with people saying "boy, that's a stupid contract!" the day they were signed? I'd think at least half of them. Yet GMs continue to give them out like candy every July.

Amazing that Looch and Marchand were both signed to similar cap hit deals

Possibly. But this team does have roughly $10M in cap space this off season and there won't be as much desperation to offload it. I can see him hesitating to add an additional 4 years worth of buy out dollars to the cap when we'll likely be tight up against it going forward.

I wouldn't be in favor of trading valuable assets to rid ourselves of that contract either as we're already short on picks as it is.

For some reason, I have a hard time seeing the Flames buying out Brouwer this summer. Four years (granted a smaller cap hit) is a lot to endure on your cap for a guy who won't be playing for you. If anything, I see a buyout happening next summer when the cap hit only lasts for 2 years instead of 4 and at a more reasonable cost.

Most GMs don't stick with the team as long the fans do.

Would be better to retain and trade Brouwer rather than buy out but even that only makes sense if we need to free up the roster spot. Brouwer at 2.5mil for 2 years can probably be traded for a mid/late round pick to a team needing depth forwards. He doesn't fit in well here but he was fine in St. Louis and Washington.

That's The "best worst contract" I could think of. Good player, awful contract.
