If not, he needed to recoup assets as best as he can in the face of a failed season.

Weeks later, the Flames were still right in the mix in the deadline and so he got us Stone, who was pretty important down the stretch and in the playoffs... even though we lost all 4.
The same logic will likely apply this year also.

I think a coaching change is an easy call for fans but if you're actually running the team you need to make sure you find the right coach otherwise you're firing and hiring another coach in the short term. I highly doubt that is what management wants to do. I'd have no issue doing that but I'm sure the organization does.

It sure is going to suck watching the islanders draft Matt’s brother with our 1st rounder.

So you’d be prepared to mail it in right now? Not saying it’s bad or good, depending on what you’re expectations are, but you would blow off a run at the playoffs now for a stop gap (maybe) coaching change?

I would even consider a short term stop gap option.

Pretty much impossible to happen.

Either that pick will be not good enough unless it wins the lottery, in which case Dahlen would get picked.

Personally I would love a coaching change right now but I think there are limited options available. I'd gladly take Tippett or a few others just for the sake of making a change but I highly doubt the organization views things like that. I'm just saying it's easy to make a call as a fan when you face zero consequences for the decision. If you're Treliving and you don't like the options available long term then maybe waiting until the off season is your best option.

What if we hire Tippett now and Quenville becomes available in the off season or a similar situation?

Remember that the Oilers rule resulted in now the top 3 picks being lotteried. It is conceivable that the flames win one of the latter two picks and Brady Tkatchuck would be in play.

The worst part about this team is the fact that on paper, when you stack our team up against the rest of the NHL, they look really really good.

Treliving has put together a really great group of players, he's a great GM. BUT Glen Gulutzan is becoming his worst move. Who ever is responsible for firing this guy, and I'm assuming that is Treliving's job, needs to dump this guy before the fans really start to turn on him. And if this goes beyond BT and is a management call then that's insane micromanaging that's holding this team back.

As a life long fan it hurts to see one of the best all round teams we've had in a long while not being utilized to the best of their ability.

I think he needs a shift in ideology if he is to stay on with the Flames. We need to focus on Speed and a relentless forecheck. We need to target players that can get us there. If Vegas can do it so can we. We need a new coach, a new system and some change of scenery trades to get more speed.

This team is too predictable and easy on the puck. Having possession is one thing, but without speed and execution there's no point in holding the puck for as long as you can...

In all seriousness what do both Treliving & Gulutzan have to show for the 2017-2018 and we all know damn well they will both use Smith getting injured "10 games" ago as their excuse for failing the franchise finishing 5th in their division and out of the playoffs 10th or 11th in conference.

the flames didn't have a deep prospect pool before the Hamonic trade. Those picks traded are gonna set the flames back imo. Tre should be feeling the heat.

What he needs is to be gone. The guy has a good system at even strength but he refuses to dump Cameron and he's prone to making irrational lineup decisions. We need to fire him pronto. I want an open vacancy so we can move fast on coaches In the off-season.

As for Treliving... I just don't see a guy that has no picks before the 4th round and no playoffs coming back. Burke should go with him but probably won't

All these minor errors in decision are adding up and is causing or will cause big problems going forward.

- Losing a second for Lazar
- Signing Brouwer for way too much and too long and giving him a no trade
- Bringing coaches that have only ever lost before or not very successful in NHL level
- Frolik slightly overpaid, Jets realized this and didn't pay up
- I think Backlund will be a bad contract in a couple years become like Stajan 2.0.
- Hamonic ans Smith ok, but we aren't ready for a push to get these types of players that will be out of their prime by the time we are ready just wasting valuable high end picks.

He was good at negotiating Gaudreau and Monahan contracts I give him that but hes pushing to fast to try to get us into the playoffs... and if that's his goal to go all in right now and catch lightning in a bottle then he shouldn't have hired rookie coach GG who is just himself learning how to win in this league.

My thoughts from the PGT:

Fact of the matter is the Flames have never really been fortunate to have competent management. You only make the Hamonic trade if you are on the cusp of a Stanley Cup. This team got SWEPT in round 1 last year and now you turn around and trade your 1st rounder for a guy you want to slot in behind Gio, Hamilton and Brodie... i.e a #4 dman?? And don't lottery protect it.. it literally makes no sense.

Hiring coaches who are not a fit, trading away 1st rounders, signing veterans to gross over valued contracts, not addressing the goalie situation prior to this year, BT has actually done a terrible job.

The Penguins have won back to back cups, can anybody name their top 6 D over those 2 seasons? This idea that you need to be loaded on D and that it takes precedent over addressing issues up front is ridiculous, yet the Flames have had this strategy for what 10 years? First with the Regehr, Phaneuf and Bouwmeester trio and now with the current crop. The Preds are the only team that I can think of that have had any success in the last 10 years building from the back end out and they haven't won a cup, on top of that they actually have a really strong quick forward group.

The Flames are so thin up front its laughable, they lack speed, they lack skill, but sure lets continue to trade 1st rounders and continue to prioritize D over forwards during the offseason.

Don't get me wrong GG is absolutely putrid and the wrong guy to lead any team let alone the Flames, but BT should lose his job just for the Hamonic trade, let alone his overall perception of what wins in this league and every other bad move he's made.

Its frustrating but I'm used to the Flames being the most mediocre franchise in the NHL.

Things are bad enough we don't have to be dramatic and worry about something that is almost impossible

Honestly, if it means our pick was used to keep him away from Edmonton or Vancouver or even Arizona, so be it. Silver linings and all that.

You make some good points but you're off about the need for a strong D core. Chicago built around a strong D core in Keith / *Campbell / Seabrook / Hjalmarsson. L.A. built around a strong D-core in Doughty / Voynov / Mitchell / *Muzzin / *Regehr. Pittsburgh's 2016 Cup came off a very strong top six D of Letang / Dumoulin / Daley / Maatta / Cole / Schultz each of whom played their role to perfection. Boston, again you're talking about guys like Chara and Boychuk, although goaltending carried them that one year in particular. You can go back further and find the 08 Red wings with Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall being an elite trio. And the year before that, the 07 Ducks with Pronger / Neidermayer / Beauchemin. There's no doubt that it's a prerequisite to the vast majority of good teams.

Really, the only teams to win cups without elite defense have been the 2017 Penguins (because Letang was hurt and their goalies played at an unreal level), and even that comes with the asterisk that Justin Schultz was a top Norris vote getter.

The problem is that our coaches in both scenarios you've named - Phaneuf / Regehr / Bouwmeester and Giordano / Brodie / Hamilton - have been Brent Sutter and Glen Gulutzan. Two coaches who are simpy braindead when it comes to utilization of defensemen.

As far as up front - yes those were good teams - all those good teams had true number one centers - guys like Getzlaf, Datsyuk/Zetterberg, Crosby/Malkin, Bergeron, Toews, Kopitar. You don't acquire a player like that by "GMing", you have to tank or hit the jackpot, and we never tanked and we never hit the jackpot with a #1 center. It's just the reality of the situation although I'm sure someone will tell me how Sean Monahan is great at scoring 3 on 3 goals or power play snap shots which means we can just ignore the completeness of his game and pretend he impacts the game like the aformentioned group.

Interesting take...as embarrassing as it would be for us to win the lottery its actually better for the Flames to send the top pick out east rather than have a division rival have it

Deal is done the pick is not coming back...we would constantly be reminded though

This is what gets me. We hire a mediocre coach who everyone knew nothing of other than he was assistant to a mediocre Canucks team. He was demoted to assistant after less than two years as Head Coach in Dallas, where they did not make the playoffs at all. The only other time GG made it to the playoffs is when Calgary took it in 2015. For some reason Treliving thought it would be a good idea to make him head coach again for his admirable performance. And cause he was a nice guy.

Then they started bringing in spare part Canucks to fill spots - Bartkowski, Vey, Shinkaruk, (Chris Higgins on a PTO). Clearly those were GG's guys, because no one else could possibly have faith in any of them except for him.

I am also tired of seeing Treliving giving media interviews and coming across like he's playing the long game, making the smart decisions, and has a method to his madness. Well Brad, it's been almost 4 years, most of which was spent rebuilding. Where are we now? Oh yes, floundering for a playoff spot with no discernible signs of improvement.

I used to think Treliving was a wizard; some things looked good on paper. But now, I just think he's been pulling the wool over our eyes. He hasn't done enough to drastically improve the team performance. This is year 5 of the rebuild.

We can only be patient for so long before something has to give. I am now fully on-board a regime change. and every accumulated pile of home losses and to second-rate teams is more reason for my frustration.
