Totally get that and roster changes need to happen this summer. But coaches are easily replaceable onto the next one and the next one etc. Flames have not found the right guy to sail the ship yet. Im confident in Treliving that he will get it right the second time.

At this point the playoffs are looking like a really tall order. Going to be very hard to outrun 2 of Los Angeles and Anaheim, and San Jose given the leads they now have and the number of games left.

For the people saying that the team is mentally weak and it falls on GG.
How many years have we been beating the same drum? How many coaches do we need to go through, before we admit it's the players?
Maybe we need to hire some more player shrinks to work on their mental state, again. These players are mentally weak, they have been long before GG came aboard (i'm all for firing GG, it's just not going to change the players weak mental states).
Some People would blame Iginla's leadership abilities, some would blame the coach at the time. Iginla is gone, the coaches have been changed numerous times, same mental weakness.

Thats all over the map. By your reasoning you're suggesting that the logo on the jersey makes for a fragile or mentally weak player?

good thing they don't have to
It will be a tall task but wild cards are both still in play...Blues have one win in 7 games. If they outrun the Ducks they are in IMO

But when you have to get more points than all of those teams, it’s pretty hard.
It’s fine to say 95 points should get you in, but perhaps one of these teams goes on a tear. The odds suggest at least one will. And that’s the team that will make it.

So it's the logo?
I don't think anyone said they were weak a few years ago when they were the NHL comeback kids. Pulling goalie down tow goals and winning games.
I'm not sure what the answer is.

My point was there is more than one spot available...you don't have to get more points than ALL of those teams. Calgary has 4 spots within 4 points and 2 spots within 2 points right now.
There are 7 teams and 4 spots...you need to be better than 3 teams
95 points would give you a better than 50% chance of making it
97 would do it for sure
Not saying either of these totals are likely

People would blame Iginla, I really don't think it's Giordano's fault.
Personally, I think it's the nature of the game these days. A lot of different teams face the same problems, talk to any Habs/Sens fan.
But yet fans are quick to find their newest scapegoat and lynch them. Change the coach, the same problems will be here IMO. Unless you bring in an amazing coach, and i'm not sure Mike Babcock is available (aren't many quality coaches that gives teams the confidence that this team lacks).

But they have to be quite a bit better than some of those teams.
97 won’t do it for sure, there is no guarantee.
Gaining 4 points with the number of games left is harder than you think.
Getting Smith back would be huge, as they can perhaps go on a streak with him in nets.

This team (with largely the same core and leadership group) wasn't weak under Bob Hartley.

Were Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano, Brodie and Backlund mentally weak in 2015? A huge part of our core was the same core that made up the "never say die" Flames that fought through adversity like it was nobody's business. Since then the only truly "core" additions are Tkachuk and Hamilton, with Hamilton sort of replacing Brodie as a core D. Tkachuk's been arguably the clutchest player on our team this year - our few third period comebacks have tended to start with a huge Tkachuk goal or assist.
When you look at the players on the ice when we're falling apart, it's our core guys. Last night the centers on the ice for goals against were Backlund, Monahan, Monahan, and Backlund. The night before it was Monahan, and Backlund. How does the same core of players go from mentally strong to mentally weak if mental strength is an inherent trait of the players?

Well they are four back of home ice...not counting on that. They are 1, 2, and 3 points back of the other 3 available playoff spots
97 will VERY likely do it...pretty much guaranteed like 90%
You think every all 3 Cali teams plus a central team are gonna finish above 97 points? that is highly unlikely

I'm not sure I do. But it is food for debate.

Flames have the third best winning percentage in the NHL when trailing after two periods so I'd be inclined to not agree with what Friedman said.

You're right. It's not like they had just entered a rebuild when he started coaching here or anything. Totally fair and the win percentage is completely on the coaching. There were no other factors at play there.
Going to the second round of the playoffs was horrible. I hated that.

I think this is based more on how much fight the team has in it then vs. now rather than what the end result was ultimately. That team had the resolve to battle back or at least go down with a fight. This team seems to lack that on most nights. Whats the difference? Most of the core is still here. What changed with those players? The players around them? Coaches?
