Do we agree with what Friedman said at the break?
Paraphrasing: "There is no other team in the NHL that takes an in-game set-back as badly as the Flames do."
I'm not sure I do. But it is food for debate.

People are calling a spade a spade...not all his fault but Rittich hasn't been good enough. Flames are barely allowing any chances.
You think .900 save % and 3.11 GAA is good enough at this level? Its not

Yeah - it is about the 3rd or 4th time this year he has done that and even during his broadcasts the last few weeks, this slant has been obvious. I don't think it's a good look. Did the game get out of hand last night, absolutely.
Dallas executed the Ducks game plan against the Flames perfectly and this team struggles when it faces adversity.

I'd say they're right up there with Edmonton for coming apart at the seams under pressure. Definitely the most frustrating Flames team to watch since some of those Brent Sutter squads that just gave up and stopped playing whenever they hit a snag. Lots of similarities in terms of having to play "perfect hockey" to win.

I'm sure plenty of teams are as bad or worse (Oilers) Still I think most would expect them to be better with the roster they have

The Flames haven't beaten the Oilers for two seasons now. Flames lost to the Rangers a few weeks ago. I don't think you can assume the Flames will go on a string of wins here since they've been consistent in showing they're not consistent in winning. If they were playing like Vegas and Preds, then it would be fair to imagine they would win 5 out of those 6 games. They probably would've won last night then since that technically should've been a game they should've won since it was against a non playoff team.
|
I am not saying it will be easy for them to win 5 of 6 but the Avs have one home loss in 13 games and are one of the best home teams in the league. They have the same amount of points as the Flames.

This is one of the things that annoys me the most about Gulutzan. He has no capability to get the team to move past a bad break. This is a huge part of being a head coach, and there is a reason not many people are considered for the job. Not many people have that kind of skill on top of all the other necessary skills to be a head coach.
When my kid gets all flustered and frustrated, I talk her off the ledge, and get her re-focused. Parents do it with kids. Coaches do it with players. Gulutzan lacks that ability. When the Flames get gut punched, they play winded for the rest of the game.

Is it not on the players too. Why are the guys, who are paid million of dollars to excel at their craft, get a pass on being able to remain focused and execute?

Of course the players should be accountable. But thats 20 different personalities all moving in their own direction when things go awry. You need someone to collect them and refocus them.

Can they still be the 100 point team Gulutzan thought they were at camp?
My guy says no.
No Smith=no playoffs.

sure I totally agree...Flames put themselves in this position with their poor play in the first half. Just saying, this idea that the Kings and Sharks are playing lights out is false.
Since the start of 2018 Calgary has gained 9 points on the Kings...Shame they spotted the Kings a 11 point lead

Not giving a pass, but the players have come to expect rock solid goaltending this year. They haven’t gotten it the last two nights, especially last night. And Rittich last 4 starts have all been poor, and he’s given up goals on chances that Smith would save. The previous game Rittich was throwing his hands up in the air two or three times and his defenseman didn’t bother to acknowledge.
The Flames went what, over a month without giving up more than 3 goals? That’s a solid defence and a good goalie. Defence hasn’t changed, but goalie has and he has let in 15 in his last 3 starts and 24 in last 6 appearances.
So when a couple decent chances, that Smith would’ve unspectacularly saved and really aren’t noticed, go in like the first two did on Rittich, the team isn’t used to having to deal with less faith in the goaltending given the standard Smith has set.

Only 10 more games to go with Stajan and then nothing to show from the greatest draft class ever of 2003.
Offseason:
-New Coaches and Assistants
-New 4th line. (one that doesn't include $7MM+ tied up in Stajan and Brouwer FFS)
-Bennett in the top 6 and another stud forward with the Stajan and Brouwer $$.
-Lose a D Man and rotate the youngsters in on the third pairing.
-No more dumb veteran experiments, let the young guys play minimal amounts with a steady rotation of them to build assets and create energy.
-No more soft players.

And that's where a lot of blame falls on Treliving. The many opposed to the Smith trade didn't like it mainly due to his injury history and being unable to hold up a whole season at his age...and getting Lack as a back-up just made things worse. If Smith is a significant injury risk, and are playoff hopes are sunk without him, he really gambled a lot that things would just work out.

It's a lot easier to replace 1 coach than 19 players.

Yeah, there is a certain 'don't look at me, I don't know what to do!' element to his coaching style.
Fire GG and bring back D.Sutter? Or is it too late?
Even if it is too late, maybe give him what's left of this season and the next two? Then BT is done after that unless, success.
