Hahaha i can pretty much guarantee you i'm the biggest gambler on this board, bet around $4k/week from the start of NFL season to end of NHL but thanks for the condescending and incorrect assumption.
EDIT: Sorry a little too mean on my part so i'll retract this part but will say it is frustrating seeing you attack posters who don't share your unbridled optimism

Of all the sayings, terms, slang, and references which are no longer socially acceptable or politically correct, I am shocked as #### “gypped” is still acceptable.
The refs didn’t necessarily cause a Flames loss, but they sure made the game incredibly hard to watch. Flames season is far from over, should be a very interesting final few weeks.
...And Jesus Christ so we have to endure some of the bickering that is going on eight now? I can assure there are members here who play with funds far greater than a few thousand dollars as a regular part of portfolio management. Let’s not start a duck measuring contest over friendly wagers.

Tossing a teams best player in a game that has playoff race implications is just crazy. It went from Flames should be going on a short 2 man advantage to best player being tossed. Just crazy.

That's a good point, that was an awful call and really set the tone for the refs tonight. Backs scoring on that pk made it that much sweeter. I hate blaming officials because it's a bit of a cop-out, and always the go-to excuse for when your team loses, but tonight they were atrocious. That being the case, the Flames were still responsible for their own undoing tonight. Bad penalty by Chucky, maybe Rittich should have had a save, and the entire team just collapsed after they scored their first goal. I knew Colorado was going to win right then, it's been the same story all season long.

This one loss dropped out playoff chances big time, if you put any stock in the statistical odds.

AGAIN...there is a difference between saying "season over" and being realistic.
There is still much to be decided, I'm not throwing in the towel but it wont be easy.
Season is far from over than

But if you were being realistic, you'd say the season is over?

With that being said...
This one was in the bag. Suddenly, the Flames got sloppy and undisciplined, and then they got rattled and then shell-shocked. Rittich could have been a bit sharper, but it was hardly his fault there in the 2nd. Flames just didn't support him.
This is why I am glad that the Flames are having a bunch of games against poor competition - build some damn confidence and composure instead of collapsing. They rebounded a bit in the third, but by then the refs had this one comfortably put away.
You move on and hope for the best next game.
So much for 'Gulutzan just looks down and never argues with the ref!!' comments - bench minors in back-to-back games. Never would have guessed that. I am sure Gulutzan is probably feeling some heat and this is probably part of the reason why. However, I am sure that in the past two seasons he has had some choice words with the refs that we just don't see on TV or notice in the stands.
This is starting to feel like the beginning of the end for the Flames this season. It is great that 'visually' and 'statistically' they are a better team, but they are simply not getting the job done this year. Like Gulutzan or not, but I imagine he simply won't be the Flames' coach next season if they continue faltering down this stretch.
As for 'blow it up!' - couldn't disagree more. This team needs to make some roster adjustments (and in my opinion, a system adjustment to make more use of the highly talented and mobile blue line in place, with even more mobile prospects coming down the pipeline). Whether it is Gulutzan or someone else, they need to incorporate the D more and get this team playing a quicker game.
Also...
If I am Gulutzan, I am having a shooting practice. Maybe the next 3 practices, I am making my guys shoot like crazy - under pressure - and make sure they hit the net or they can go do mountain climbers. Too many missed shots and opportunities.
It isn't a bad team, but it needs more depth. You don't blow up the team just because you need a bit of depth.
Will be interesting how they finish off the season (hopefully well and comfortably in a playoff spot!). Will be interesting to see what happens if they don't. Either way, there is reason enough to keep me watching.
|
The problem lies with the gameplan or system... I don't understand why they hold onto the puck as long as they do and then when they do shoot, it is under pressure which results in missing the net. Watching other teams and whether it is a shot or pass, the puck is on and off the stick in no time. It seems as if the plan is to draw a defender to the point and then out number them down low but it hasnt worked all year... you would think they could try something new that results in more pucks making it to the net.
Give me 5 soft pucks on net with traffic over 1 hard shot on net with traffic anyday.

Agreed. Go win the next two and suddenly they’re flirting with wild card again. They’re easily within striking distance.

Brouwer.... a great 4th line guy we all love until we remember his salary. The salary isn't hurting us right now so no big deal. Coaching seemed to insist on trying to turn him into a top 6 guy too many times instead of facing what we have.
Hathaway... when reminded he is an agitator who plays the body and gets under the skin of other players he is one of my favourite flames to watch. When he plays like Stajan he is completely replaceable as he doesnt bring the experience or leadership Stajan has.... Why he hasn't sat more often after soft games is beyond me.
Stewart and Glass.... inject them both into the lineup on the same night means we are going to play in your face, crash and bang our way to a win and put Anaheim, LA and Edmonton on notice that we can also play big. Instead we see Glass follow the formula on his first shift and then the plan blew away in the wind and we decided to play a skill game with grinders in the lineup.
Bennett has got to be frustrated beyond belief. I understand how many of you are on his case but the guy cant catch a break. He finally gets an opportunity to play with Johny and Mony, we win back to back games scoring 5 in each game and then he is replaced with a waiver wire player...what does that do to a guys confidence. It is obvious he is fighting the game right now and often tries to do too much which leads to a bad play. I will take a wager any day of the week that this guy will score 30 in a season under a different coach.
The 3M line.... why is it impossible to break this up when we are losing? If Bennett isnt the answer on the top line, why have we not seen Tkachuk play with them and Bennett slot in with Backlund and Frolik? I get that the 3 of them play well but imagine if you could create 2 good lines by trying to mix it up.
Our top offensive D man having to wait as long as he did to find a firm spot on the top PP was just stupid.
Hamonic .... I must not have known as much as I thought I did about him because I thought he was a tough keep your head up kind of d man. I still have no issues with the trade as I think he is having an off year and has a lot more to give and could be flipped for more than we paid under a different system that plays to players strengths and not black and white X's and O's
Jankowski... How many rookies did we have sit out every now and then to watch from above over the last few years? He isn't a liability but he isn't anywhere close to what he can be. It feels so "oiler'ish" to let him keep coasting to mediocrity without trying something new.
I believe in this team and despite many of the posts thinking it is average, I believe we are a top team in the division with a healthy Smith and coach who plays each individual player and not advanced stats.
|
My biggest thing with GG is his misusage or failing to put his players in situations to succeed. The belief that the system is better and more important than any one player.
A truly talented coach would get the most out of this team and the personnel and would be able to get more out of them as a whole.
The system forces the players to overthink each decision instead of it being a fluid just play and know what you need to do and don’t over complicate it game play

And ya it would be a dumb bet on your part because this team is not that good, thanks in large part to terrible coaching. What's really dumb is your constant berating of posters who point that out in post game threads with your holier than thou attitude.
Good night now.

Holy Guacamole, haven't seen a post this "dig one's own grave"-ey for years.

Just watching the highlights again, and all the theorizing around players, lines, shifts and GG managing the team are all valid at a higher level....
.....but when breaking down last night and tonight down to the brass tacks, Gillies and Rittich were simply terrible these last two games and fully responsible for the loss.
Rittich has been shelled has last 4 games since he’s been given a bit of adversity, and failed miserably at it. Gillies fought the puck in his first couple games and just doesn’t look ready for the pressure either.
Is Smiths stellar season covering up cracks? Sure, and that’s an issue, but at this point who cares. Continue to cover the cracks into the playoffs and deal with the bigger fixes in the summer.
All the arguments that exist will last through the summer about a variety of things that get hashed all over this board, but in the immediate term the team has it infront of them still, and the team has to get in the playoffs and for better or worse somehow, and they need these goalies to play lights out for another few games and then pray that Smith gets back in and continues where he left off.
