Took me 80% of the season to understand it, but this is an average team with a horrible coach, saved by Mike Smith.
I overrated the depth, we're not deep. Brouwer turned out to be garbage, so did Bennett (while he can turn it around) - those two were supposed to solidify the top 9.
With Versteeg out, Jagr playing his age it became painfully obvious - there is not enough talent - and the score board showed it.
Add an absolutely Grade A Clown Coach and it's where we are. Sure, Smith/Johnny/Monahan/Tkachuk/Gio can carry us on some nights, but not for a full season.
I will be thrilled to see Brodie or Smith replaced next year with Kylington/Andersson/Valimaki or Fox and then use that asset to reconfigure the top nine forwards.

You have to actively manage the emotional state of your team for timeouts to be effective.
If you are using excel spreadsheets to make all of your decisions, you're right, timeouts don't do squat.

I think it's sad we don't call it a Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet.

And the two or three 2 minute timeouts wasn’t enough to manage the emotional state of the team? But a 30 second timeout changes everything? Using timeouts don’t guarantee anything except zero shots at a challenge and in a tight game, you want that challenge. Your spreadsheet remark makes no sense either.

I remain convinced you are either GG himself or maybe his brother or mother. The personnel usage and team management tonight was inexcusable. Although I did like how salty he was in the post game presser.

The difference is timing. You call a timeout immediately after a deflating goal, and it gives the team a chance to regroup. How many times have we seen a bad goal against, and then right off the next faceoff we're in our own zone running around? Taking 30 seconds to just breathe, realize it's still a 2-2 game (or whatever), refocus, and get ready for the next shift can have an impact. It doesn't change everything. But in the 95% of games where a challenge won't happen, it can do something.

It doesn't help that Gully loves to put his pluggers on the ice after getting scored on. And that's not even the worst crap he's pulled after a demoralizing goal.

I guess in the new NHL coaches don't call timeout anymore, or I'm just too old. Yes, you want to save the timeout for challenge in a tight game. But, without the timeout to settle the team down, a tied game can turn into a rout. That's what happened tonight and many other games. A good coach would be able to tell if it's worth the timeout and not grudgingly saving it for possible challenge later in the game, IMHO anyway.

I literally have zero ties to Gulutzan, never heard of him until he was hired here and really don’t care if gets the can or not. I can just as easily say that you’re either Sam Bennett’s mother or father because you sure defend a disappointing prospect who takes way too many offensive zone penalties that hurts his team.
Management can fire the coach and go on another coaching carousel and go through another learning curve and all that, but the underlying problem is not gonna be rectified until this team fixes the actual root of the problem, and fyi, penalties just happen to be the a part of the problem and there’s a select few players who are constant culprits and yes Sam Benentt is at the top of that list

Where was he on "that list" as a rookie? You know, the year before the coach implemented a completely different approach.

Yeah maybe it does something, maybe it doesn’t. But I can see why he’d want to keep that and surely you can see the motivation too. Having a timeout in your back pocket can be just as equally important.

Average rookie season. Even waiver wire Lance Bouma had 16 goals and 34 points playing wtih Backlund. Not sure why everyone always points to Sam’s rookie season as some great barometer.
You guys want to see great rookie seasons? Look at what Matt Barzal, Brock Boeser and Charlie McAvoy are doing right now or what Laine and Matthews did last season. Those are impressive rookie seasons.

what does any of that have to do with penalties?

Johnny Gaudreau is the closest and he wasn’t even on the scout’s original list. He was a wild card that Tod Button was hoping to grab in the late rounds. That’s the problem with this organization, speed and skill is not their priority, they care more about guys who play with edge and truculence under Burke’s reign. That’s why we signed Troy Bouwer long term and gave up a 2nd for Lazar and chose plugs like Hunter Smith in the 2nd round.
Is there any wonder why Burke’s core was dismantled and why all of a sudden the Maple Leafs are one of the best teams in the league? It’s because they have talents like Marner, Nylander, Matthews and etc. Pure skill players who can drive play and break games wide open in a single shift. I watch the Leafs a lot and even though they give up a lot of goals and chances, they can outscore their problems which is something we can’t do.

What exactly are you getting at? Sam Bennett has ways been a penalty machine. Just look at his time in juniors where he collected 118 PIMS in 57 games. That averages out to over a penalty every game.
The team specifically wanted to draft Sam Bennett for his competitiveness and edge. They were obviously hoping his scoring ability would translate into the NHL, but only his edge and penchant for penalties has so far.
I could deal with Sam Bennett’s scoring slumps if it wasn’t for the endless offensive zone penalties he takes. Drives me absolutely crazy. Benoit Pouliot had the same issue with the Oilers and they decided to buy out his contract with 2 years remaining.

To quote Gordon Geko in Wall Street: If this guy owned a funeral parlor, nobody would die, this turkey is totally brain dead!!!
I will go back to the beginning of last season when Frolik was the top goal scorer, was NEVER put onto the PP and for a while this team was a bottom feeder in terms of PP scoring. This guy was hired with a mandate to fix this issue and he still wouldn't add Frolik to the PP. I suspect FINALLY somebody of power or significance sent an email or made a call and told him to wake UP and to nevermind the BS.
This is a guy who's arrogance shines loud and proud without the results to back up. I have no doubt that this coach's personalities traits and how he deals with young players can have a positive impact. His in game management and almost daily questionable calls is becoming legendary. If you were to compare him to a coach in the NFL such as Belichck, who's legendary ruthlessness yet league dominating tactical management of the game and the game's nuances makes him a winner.
Does anybody who's actually a big fan of the job this guy has done believe that this guy will get us to where we need to be? Do we expect him to come to camp next year and have HIS team steamroll our opponents ? Can we expect a long and sustained playoff run to the western conference finals and eventually the cup? Does anything in this guy's career scream winner?

When does Treliving get fired? Glue gun didn’t hire himself and that Hamonic trade hasn’t really pushed the needle. Not to mention drafting Bust Bennett and whatever happened to the Ben Bishop near trade. Brian Burke should go too. It’s a shame this management team is wasting a lot of Gaudreaus best years.

I am a big fan of Treliving, but I agree on the coaching. If he can't admit he made a mistake and let go of this guy, maybe it's time we let go of him.
As for Hamonic, I disagree. This deadline showed that it was actually a fair price for Hamonic. He's been solid after a rough start, but has become a legit top 4 defenceman. The reasons it seems it's horrible is because of our coaching staff who lose games by themselves with their arrogance and stubbornness. If the Flames were performing better, we wouldn't be discussing this trade.
Bennett was a consensus top 4 pick, I don't know what you want. Hindsight is nice but unfortunately you can't predict how a prospect will turn out. Sometimes even top 5 picks bust. Too bad.
