The guy who will be running X is the guy who has been, up until now, running Q107. His forte is alternative rock, and had his hands tied with the classic rock format. I think it will be a great improvement over the rock stations we've seen in the last 10 years IMO.

Don't like the song that's playing? Choose between almost 100 other music channels with no commercials. Zero ads.
Hockey games, talk, news. I haven't heard a Nickleback song in a year now, it's great. Testicular radio does not compare.

Not to mention 30 presets. And you can listen online as well. 100 stations that you can listen to anytime anywhere no matter your location. Plus, for Sirius subscribers, Howard Stern. That show is pretty good now that it is totally uncensored.

The Stern Show is f'ing hilarious, never fails to make me laugh out loud at least a couple times a day. I have not missed a minute since they started at Sirius.
But yeah, I had my password/username emailed to me a while back, nice to have the option to listen online. Even though most of us in Calgary won't need to, we have such a powerful repeater that you can still get the signal inside of most buildings.
Roads trips with the Sirius are great, no fading signal, no searching for something else to listen to when you're out of range. You can drive up to the Arctic and still listen to all your favorite channels. I actually have a work trip coming up that will take me to Nunavut, nice to know that I'll be able to listen to my choice of 3 or 4 NHL games in the evening and listen to Stern all during the day.

Thanks for the info. I am glad that Fraser is leaving Rock 106. Initially I liked him but I felt that his views were too negative and that his views were the only views anybody was allowed to have. I stopped listening to the morning show on Rock 106 because of him.
Oh, and he is an Oiler fan, here is his BIO on Rock 106:

If "alternative" includes Nickelback, Creed, The Killers, etc, then no thanks.

Right now, it might. And as much as the collective at CP doesn't like it, they have to go with what's charting, and what the major number of the listening public wants.
Creed, not so much, but Killers will probably be on there. I can almost guarentee that Nickleback will, cause they've been very popular over the last 5 years, AND the double whammy... CANCON.
But I'm sure you'll here more of the 90s sound ie-Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden... etc. I doub't they'll have anything to do with anything earlier than 1990, but I don't quite know for sure.

Sometime in the mid-90s "alternative" rock got stolen from us. Bob Mould wrote a song about it, "I Hate Alternative Rock":
I knew you when you had something to say . . .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_rock
By the mid-90s, alternative was synonymous with grunge in the eyes of the mass media and the general public, and a supposed "alternative culture" was being marketed to the mainstream in much the same way as the hippiecounterculture had in the 1960s (the existence of any such culture is debatable, and is often seen by some fans of the music to have been a creation of the media). Thus, many wildly popular post-grunge bands such as Third Eye Blind and Matchbox Twenty were labeled as "alternative" rock. Nevertheless, alternative bands who were leery of broad commercial success developed indie rock, a genre that espoused a return to the original ethos of alternative music

First off that's an album chart...
Secondly that is a campus chart most of that stuff is not commercially viable aternative music. The goal for any comemrcial radio station is to make money. Like it or not that can't be done when Tom Waits is in your top 10.

oh god.
'alternative' - holy buzzword batman.
as soon as people start listening to music they like and not music someone tells them to like, it might actually be safe to turn on the radio again.
what a ****ing joke.

commercially viable aternative = oxymoron
They try to hook you with the "alternative" tag, but they offer nothing cutting edge. Just derivative watered-down grunge.

I'll take my iPod over radio (traditional or satellite) any day, thank you very much. I don't find the endless variety of crappy, poorly programmed, subscription based satellite stations a real alternative to the limited variety of crappy, poorly programmed free stations.

Is this going to be the same radio group that owns Sonic in Edmonton. Sonic doesn't use the alternative label as much as it claims to be a new rock station. Still it plays a lot of stuff that charts because at the end of the day the music that is selling the most records tends to draw listeners, and more listeners mean higher advertising revenue.

Different ownership group than Sonic, which by the way was just sold to Rogers. That could very well spell the end of the cool way they conduct their business. It's too bad really.
Sonic uses the term "Modern Rock" instead of "Alternative".

What is radio??
The only thing that ****es me off is when a radio station takes over my IPOD station.
If I was to go pack to radio it would have to be satelite. A question to anyone using satelite radio, have you found any dead spots aroung Calgary. I know there is suppose to be none hence the word satelite, but I'm just curious.
