He signed in 2014-2015. His play has regressed. If shore can win faceoffs and not skate around aimlessly with one hand on his stick, and avoid icing it twice a game, the coaching staff will put him in Stajans spot.
Point being, the coaches will do what’s best for the team, not keep Stajan in the lineup because some teammates like him
Maybe. He missed one game last year and missed 2 the year before. They seem to like him the lineup.
Veteran Experience is everything in this league on the 4th line.
The competition is good though. Nick Shore will get playing time. Lazar and him might switch out..

There hasn’t really been anyone to compete for his job during that time. Lazar briefly but didn’t really stick at Center. Now shore is here to push Stajan for that 4c spot. And if he replaces him it means he is doing a better job, which is only a positive for the flames.
I dunno what Shore will be, but I find it very easy to imagine he can be better than Stajan. Hopefully he can take his job.
And again to your initial point, that decision will be made by the coaching staff, not the roster players.

Whatever. You win.

Stajan hasn't regressed (that much), he's had to carry some weak linemates all year, especially early on where he was saddled with the likes of Glass, Brouwer, Bartkowski. As soon as Lazar and Brouwer started playing better, Stajan's been a rock. In fact if we rewind to after Tanner Glass was waived (Nov 6th, and Bartkowski was removed from the lineup Oct 21) we see that since then, Stajan has been a positive player in every way:
These are fantastic underlying numbers for any 4C in the NHL.
His 5v5 points rate since then, of 1.34 P/60 is very much the kind of production most non-uber-stacked contenders get from their 4C.
The problem early on was:
1) Tanner Glass has never been and will never be an NHL forward in any capacity.
2) Stajan-Brouwer was an idiotic penalty kill unit. No balance whatsoever.
That said I think Nick Shore is a better player. That's not a knock on Matt Stajan, because there are many players Shore is an upgrade on.
For starters, I would like to see if he can Shore up our first penalty kill unit:
Backlund-Shore
Giordano-Hamonic
Second I think he is an upgrade on Hathaway, among others, as a potential 3RW. A Mangiapane-Jankowski-Shore line looks far more skilled and able to dictate the play than Mangiapane-Jankowski-Hathaway. That's just a matter of fact. Shore and Weal were basically the Mangiapane and Jankowski of their own very good AHL team. These are the kind of players you win with.

Although I do think Shore is an upgrade on Stajan, at the very least, I do hope Matt still gets a chance to play his 1000th game. Would be a shame if he made it this far with out reaching it because there's no guarantees that he'll even get an NHL contract next season. Could be a PTO signing.
Lots of fans like Stajan just fine, because they recognize what he has brought and what he still contributes.
I'm indifferent about Stajan at the moment. It's like the Flames can't get rid of him or his value has dropped to the point where other teams don't see a value even when he can be had for free. So, we're all just counting down until the Flames don't have any cap value from him. I guess he can be called, "Forever a Flames". LOL

I don't think Stajan is a good hockey player anymore, but I think he is a very good human being, and I do have a soft spot for him because of all the charity works he and his wife had done for the city. So, I'm conflicted here, I want him to get his 1000th game this season, but I want to make sure the Flames make the playoff.

I've met him before along with his wife and we had a great conversation for almost an hour. Terrific people. The game has likely passed him by, but from the goal he scored in game 6 three years ago to the community and charity work he's involved in, I think we owe him another 12 games of the final 19.

He has been playing better lately, and I do want him to get his silver stick
Honestly I don't know enough about Shore to be critical of the move. Flames gave up next to nothing to get Shore, perhaps another Lazar type player except this is a Center.
4th line depth and PK I am assuming.
I like giving up a 7th a hell of a lot better than the 2nd round pick for Lazar.
We don't have to waive anyone - there is no 23 man roster limit for the remainder of the season.
Having a deep bench, and being able to roll guys in and out, keeping them hungry, is exactly what is needed to get the most possible out of the bottom 6.
Also, injuries.
Agree fully. Stewart will be especially motivated as UFA and 30 years old.
We have the cap space so why not have a deeper bench.
Also like that Mangiapane and Lomberg both back in Stockton for their run at playoffs.
Hrivik also likely goes down when healthy since Shore gives us the needed center depth. Hrivik will help Stockton's center depth.
Just as important for Flames long term if Stockton has a long playoff run and our prospects get tonnes of experience.

I like this move. Low risk/moderately high reward depth at centre.
Giving up a seventh round pick that can easily be recouped by signing an undrafted free agent kid (and Flames scouting have done reasonably well in this regard).

Totally agree. I hope they find 12 games for him over the final 19.
It's funny that we've been hearing about how much the Flames have been scouting the Senators, then, they make a deal with Ottawa at the deadline and acquire a guy who has been there less than 2 weeks.
