You're right, expiring contract, probably not worth that. Maybe Buffalo has to add. But need to keep in mind you're not the only team trying to make the pitch. You need to out-bid the other suitors or step away and let someone else overpay.

GMs tend to eat every last minute of negotiating they can in recent years. Seems like they take advantage of technicalities to continue to work out trade details even after the deadline now too.

Flames are at a huge disadvantage right now because it's not just picks this year they are lacking, it's picks in future years being up in the air that makes it difficult.

All the different conditions on future picks makes this doubly frustrating. Conceivably some picks will be there once some conditions aren't met, but they can't be moved today because of the potential conditions.

Top to Bottom this organization is hugely deficient in trade-able assets.

Watching St. Louis deal Statsny for a first or watching Brassard get dealt for that big return, makes backlund signing bittersweet.

Back when there were 20+ trades at the trade deadline, there were still those trades before the trade deadline. Generally speaking, though, I think the NHLPA is thrilled with this trend.
