The best opportunity for a 40 year old to show he can continue playing NHL caliber hockey is to start skating again just weeks after hip surgery?

He was getting bone fragments dug out of his hips, that's a procedure that would require you to probably sit on your ass a while to let the muscles recover and stitch back up properly.
Last thing you need is for all those tiny tears and rips to open early when they're still on the mend - otherwise, what the heck was the point of doing that maintenance at all.

More along the lines of a ceremonial signing.. Retire a Flame basically.

Kind of sad to see him out there trying to get back in the league

Did he have to sign by 3 PM today? I saw conflicting info earlier in the thread that said UFAs had the whole season. Any clarity on this?

He had to sign by 3pm today to be eligible for playoffs. He can still sign and play regular season games now, but playoffs are no longer and option this season.

So I would assume he doesn't sign anywhere then. I don't see a reason for him to play if he can't take one last crack at the Cup.

He can sign anytime, but today is the deadline if he wants to be eligible for playoff games.

Just like trades can still be made, but traded players after the deadline are ineligible for the playoffs.

In order to play in the playoffs, a player needs to be on a team's 90 player reserve list at the deadline.
That's why an unsigned college or junior draft pick can be signed late and still play in the playoffs. Because Iginla is a UFA, he isn't on any team's reserve list.

I wonder if anyone has ever done that and signed just for the rest of the regular season only.

Very unlikely scenario, but let's say the Flames clinch playoffs with a home game to spare and winning or losing that home game Apr 7 vs LVK has no effect on anyone else in the league for draft position or anything.

Assuming he would be well and truly done and announce retirement, what about him actually playing in that last game instead of just some ceremonial press conference signing? That'd be awesome if all parties were up for it and totally unique.
