What exactly did Brouwer contribute to that? The other 4 players passed it around while he did circles in the middle of the ice. A key contributor was removed and replaced with a non-factor and the result was two minutes of perimeter control and nothing to show for it.
Is Brouwer effective on the 4th line? Sure. But he's a waste of a player on the PP, as evidenced by the fact that the goal he just scored was only his 4th of the season.

Varlamov has been pretty awful tonight. Even auality veterans have off nights. We shouldn't trade for a goalie. Gillies and Rittich are fine.

I think this is an ideal situation to arise when you have good young goaltenders. An opportunity has popped up, and both of these guys have put in the work to get a shot at it - and Rittich’s recent stumbling aside, they’ve both shown they can play.

With Hamilton out they deployed a completely different look that was effective overall. It worked
