Matthew Bové @Matt_Bove
Can confirm that Brian Gionta is expected to sign an NHL contract in the near future with a playoff contender, as first reported by Kevin Oklobzija @WKBW

Actually, this would be a great pick up for us. Right shooting right winger with leadership ability who can play in all situations and can score goals too. No assets to give up and he’s in playing shape. I’d 100% take a chance on him. Bet he’d be an upgrade on Brouwer from day 1.

Just paid big for RW Michael Grabner. I think the Flames could be the most enticing choice for him. A possible shot in a top 6 role and no real salary limitations. We could probably offer him a $7M prorated contract with all the IR cap savings we’ve had this season.
Essentially a free RW with speed, character and leadership. Treliving has to be all over this.

The USA scored 11 goals in 5 games at the Olympics. Gionta didn't have a single point.

Yeah, hard pass on Gionta. I don't see a fit here. Being better than Brouwer is a very low bar and we should aim higher.

No to the declining 38 year old that last put up 20 goals in 2011.
Keep aiming high, only entertain a short term consolation option when the ones that can help your moving forward are no longer on the table.

Why the heck should the Flames offer 38 year old Brian Gionta a $7 million dollar contract??

Gionta would be fortunate to get 1M prorated.

This is silly season. A lot of fans and sometimes even GMs fall in love with old names they know or super stars on their team. I would be surprised if the flames chase Gionta and quite honestly I would take Iggy between the two (this coming from someone that wants neither).
If Davidson nets a third, then try to get a first or second for Stone. See if we can pick up a young asset Pageau or similar from Ottawa who has seemingly gone crazy and take a run with internal players.

Prorated. As in $1.75M for the remaining season. He’s a free asset for a team that has almost no draft picks to give up. Free assets at this time are highly valuable and what I was saying is that if there’s a bidding war for his services than we can afford to outbid other teams.
If it only costs you money for whatever cap space we have left, than it really makes no difference since the season is almost over. We’re so weak on Rw depth that any edge you can get is worth it. Even if he’s only a slight upgrade over Brouwer.

Trading a guy we just signed as a UFA over the summer is very rare and GMs never do that to upset the player/agent. Looks bad on the GM. Also we’re not out of the playoff race yet so it doesn’t make sense to trade important depth.
Iggy hasn’t played even a competitive game yet this season. His speed was an issue last season and after serious hip surgery, does it make sense for any playoff contending team to play him? An AHLer could theoretically be more effective.
Gionta however is not coming off of major surgery and did have 35 points last season which for a bottom 6 penalty killing forward, is quite good.

To hell with Zack Smith. Only way I take Zack Smith is if Troy Brouwer is going the other way.

Kane is a rental.
I don't want Smith, but I think the Flames do.

There will not be a bidding war for a 38 year old. If Jagr didn’t have teams bidding for him a the start of the season No one and I mean No one should be in a bidding war for Gionta. Your reasoning is highly flawed and is not backed by common sense at all.
