I really can't see them saying you'd have to start over. That doesn't make any sense to me.

I would have to agree with Frank. I can't imagine telling people that they would have to start all over again.

How can you just "switch" to a university?
Does the difficulty of classes increase to uni standards, get new profs, etc......
Also the Dinos/Cougers rivalry would be huge.

I don't know if I agree with the original poster (i.e. mt royal becoming a university), but that said...
....haven't they slowly been "creeping" towards university status via degree granting etc? Something along those lines?

It's a change in the programs offered. Instead of offering diplomas or certificates or whatever, they'll offer Bachelors degrees (which the already offer some, and likely only those, as I would imagine it would be a primarily undergrad university).
As has been said, it's probably going to be grandfathered in, where those who've started their diploma programs will finish them, but those going into new programs will begin a degree. Probably some differences between UofC and MRC programs too, like instead of a BComm it would be a BBA and the like.
It'll probably take a while to go through and get all the logistics sorted out as to profs, what programs will stay and go, etc.
There's been some talk of this for a while too (my mom is the chair of a program there), and it appears that progress is really slow.
A Dinos/Cougars rivalry? Does anyone even go to either team's games?

Rumor has it the that MRC will become an undergrad university, while the UofC will become much more of a graduate school.

I think that would work quite well as U of C's graduate program reputedly sucks.

You can't just switch like that, you do it gradually over time.. like Mount Royal has been doing the past couple of years, and is continuing to do.

There's alot more to a University than just basing it on the Social Work education. They're lacking in just about everything else except an above-average Medical Doctoral program. I guess that's what happens though when repeated cutbacks continually choke the University out of any good reputation.

Good Medicine and Law. Two very important grad programs. Everything else needs a bit of a boost though.

10 years ago I was taking the University transfer program my first two years at Mount Royal. ..so I can't seeing it being much of a stretch to have a fuller compliment of cirriculum for a degree.
Just drop most of the lower end certificate programs/courses and leave them to SAIT, but keep those professors, and its not a big leap. Plus, the place has expanded 10x since 1996, so its got the space.
Better profs, smaller classes (at that time), more class hours...I really wish I couldve' taken all 4 years there. U of C was a lukewarm experience all around for the final 2 years....they try too hard to keep up with the eastern schools, while MRC doesn't try to keep up with anyone and thus is more flexible with the way its run and the manner in which department heads and profs draw up and carry on the ciriculum.
Then again, it was 20$ to park at MRC for the SEMESTER!
Good times.

The University of Calgary already has two sports in the Alberta Collegiate Athletics Conference (same one as MRC) as opposed to Canadian Intervarsity Sports.
Women's Hockey and Golf.

What medicine program are you talking about? It definitely is a last resort for a lot of students i know. McLeans definitely didn't give it a good rating as well. Maybe cause it is the ONLY medical program in calgary. But it isn't good country wide that is for sure.

Are you sure about the law program, everyone I have talked to says Calgary is the program that one should avoid.

Hmm, interesting. Only a couple of years ago, it wa my understanding that the U of C had very good medicine and law - especially the law - programs. Maybe things have changed that much, I guess.
Cheers.

I was under the impression that the law program at the UofC was above par as well....
