Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Well, after seeing Smith standing still in the net yesterday before practice (TV highlights) I'm starting to worry the Flames mislead us and it may not be as bad as they thought, but it certainly isn't as good as they hoped.
960 morning team would have a field day if Howard was traded here.
That being said, the Wings just traded Mrazek. Who would play for them this year and even next?
Also, I think the Flames would be more interested in spending assets to bolster the forward ranks and stick with Rittich if they had to.
Edit: Also, if you look at Howard's pic on hockeydb it looks like someone off camera is jingling keys to get his attention.

Karlsson is a stud. Flames cannot afford him anyways

Mike Smith will travel with the team to Vegas and Arizona. Not certain he’ll get on the ice with the group, though. #Flames
I think they'll give Rittich the ball and let him run with it until Smith is healthy to play. I wonder if Gillies is the odd man out now that we have a proven backup.
Something finally nice to have an actual competition with our netminders.

Gillies would seem to be the odd man out but this group loves him and has sunk a lot of time and effort into his development. I can't see them cutting bait on him yet but really, where does he slot in? Unless they're going to do something rather stupid and trade Rittich while he's hot (can't see that either). So yeah, he'll likely be used in a trade at some point this summer.

Karlsson has proven to be a stud. His ankle surgery is not an easy one to fully come back from and mobility likely won’t be 100% ever again. Was he rushed back to keep the Sens competitive this year? Will he ever be a Norris candidate again? For $11.5/yr on a future deal, whatever team he signs that deal with better hope so. For me, I say there are too many question marks for that kind of deal. Not to mention the assets required to acquire him?...
Stay far away!!

Re: Gillies
I'd take "odd man out" to mean this current situation... not in terms of his importance or worth within the system in the big picture.

Ah poop, even Loubo dropping hints that the Flames might be looking for a veteran goalie if Smith's injury is more than day to day. Suggested its not looking as good as it did a few days ago. Not dire as they put it, but not great.

Vancouver will be trading Nilsson to us as per my source.
Update: Canucks have called up a goalie...

Treliving is fooling himself if he thinks the difference between Rittich and some other team's veteran castoff is enough to get this team to the next level. Why double down on a team that's already shown it's not that good? I don't understand.

This is a tough one, if you went out and got a Veteran goalie. Would that mean Rittich is the odd man out once Smith is healthy? Or are we doomed with another 3 headed goalie monster again.
Unless worst case scenario is Smith is done for the year and that's why they're starting to look at a vet.

Judging by the video of Smith taking shots I think he's a long ways from being healthy. The on ice sessions are to keep his upper body in game shape. He didn't move his legs at all. I'd say at least another 2 weeks

Otto-matic: Didn't make it sound like a season ending injury, but could be longer than expected. What is Rittich's waiver status? If he requires them, then they're better off not adding a vet to the roster if Smith is due back this season. Just ride it out. If he doesn't require them, then they'd send him down and we'd go with Smith & whoever I assume.
That all being said, if they are looking at veteran help knowing Smith's status I would suggest they don't have 100% faith in Rittich or are concerned that he could get hurt too.

Rittich is playing at a higher level than any backup or castoff that may be available at the deadline. I wouldn't give up much more than a late round pick for a goaltender.

Looking at goalies that are UFA at the end of this season. Probably what the Flames would be looking at. Most games played this year on an expiring deal that could be had for cheap (on a team our GM likes to deal with)? Antti Raanta

Ride Rittich and stop spending. Way too much spending the last few seasons.

Hopefully if we are trading for Nilsson it's only to put him in the A and we didn't give up more than shinkaruk
