I would like to believe Gulutzan won't be the one making those decisions next year.

Agreed. If Andersson forces his way into the lineup next training camp, I expect to see one of the current RHD traded – probably Stone.

Yeah this is basically true. I think thy have to move stone if they want to get Andersson into the lineup next year

Our best LH prospect is valimaki and hopefully he's ready next year. This is why they may have to keep Brodie regardless of what we all want

Stupid rigid LH RH rule

I think trading Brodie would be a big mistake.

CP is hyper critical of TJ. I still think he's one of the better 2nd pairing defencemen in the league.

Depends on the return.

Would you trade him for a return similar to what Hamonic demanded? maybe even more? (1st, 2 x 2nds)
Would you trade him for an impact scoring RW/Winger (20-30g) and maybe a pick 2nd/3rd?

I think you do if you feel you have the bodies coming up that can step in. Would we feel it? Sure we would, but I think if there's 1 person that could be considered expendable that would warrant a half decent return its Brodie, especially with how much serviceable top 4D usually bring you at a deadline. Realistically the only other guy demanding such assets is Hamilton and that's not happening.

There's no better time, unless you feel we have everything we need to push for a deep playoff run because like it or not we're all in this year. I think we need another piece personally.

It also depends on how confident they are that Valimaki can step into a 4/5 role or that Kulak could move up.

I truly believe that the Flames are very confident that Valimaki will be on this team next year.

It looks very much like Valimaki is the heir to Brodie’s throne. He’ll likely need at least one pro season before he’s ready for the NHL. I’m not a big fan of rushing young defensemen myself as minimizing mistakes at that position is crucial.

If Valimaki at some point surpasses Brodie, then maybe Brodie becomes a tradable asset. But only time will tell and to those who would love to see Brodie traded, it’s likely not going to happen as there seems to be a succession plan in place from upper management. It’s probably why the team seems to have no interest in trading Valimaki.

Given what this season is shaping up as (playoffs maybe but not necessarily a deep run), I’d rather the Flames stand pat than deal for the sake of dealing. Likely, we’re at least one more (if not two) season(s) away from the “big push”.

Let’s see what some of these AHL guys knocking on the door can do in training camp next year. Maybe some of these guys make some current roster guys expendable-but maybe not. Point is that we have time still to figure out how best to flesh-out this core.

If you can get a great deal for Brodie, I'd move him, play Kulak in the second pair, play Spoon or Andersson (or any bottom pairing guy that's decent that can be obtained cheap) in the bottom, then next year, keep Kulak there and groom Valimaki to move in when he's ready.

We have 0 picks until the 4th round this draft, we don't have one/two more seasons to see what we have unless you feel the 4th round is going to help our development moving forward. Hamonic trade was as close as ever to going all in this year like it or not.

Yep, I would be surprised if the plan isn't to move Brodie at the draft to recoup some of those spent picks.

It would be absolute madness to shoot a massive hole in our top four / second pairing at this point in the season while we're in a dog fight for the playoffs.

It took half the season for there to be a stable cohesiveness in our d-core and right now we have 3 pairs clicking and largely playing very well.

The potential hole and disruption to chemistry trading Brodie right now would cause could send us into a slide that sees us miss the playoffs.

It's a mind numbing suggestion.

I don’t think that’s quite the case (Hamonic being the lynch-pin for going “all-in”), but if it is, then it’s not enough on its own, would be my argument. I see Hamonic as a good gain in terms of solidifying overall defensive depth for the next few years.

I don’t believe the current roster is good enough to go deep in the playoffs this season, and I don’t think there’s an addition out there that improves our chances enough (especially relative to teams like Winnipeg) to sacrifice any of our youth depth, especially on D.

I agree that the lack of draft picks is a concern, but I don’t think this year’s draft will have any real bearing on next season or the one after, given where we’re likely picking.

I think the team’s real “shot” at being “all-in” starts next year, and that it’s dependent on some of the younger depth guys being able to fill roles so that we can make moves to round out (especially) the forward lines. I’d rather wait until summer or next season to acquire a really good fit than to take what might be available at this deadline, for example, guys like Vanek.

Brodie's not going anywhere until we find out what we have in Valimaki/Andersson/Fox/Kylington IMO.

We cannot move Brodie until Kulak can solidify himself as a #4. He's currently our #6.

I could not disagree more. Brodie continuously costs us hockey games with his blunders, his hockey IQ is terrible. This team is never going deep with TJ Brodie.

Maybe during the season, but Brodie has also been a really good playoff performer. He comes through most of the time when the games matter most.

Some of these Brodie comments are harder to read than the Bennett stuff.

He's a second pairing guy and he's being paid like a second pairing guy. He's never going to win a Norris. He's one of the best skaters on the team. He's great at moving the puck out of his own end.

Sure he's not perfect, he never was. People expect way too much out of him.

Even after lowering my expectations to "no catastrophic brainfarts costing the team at least one goal" he fails to clear to that lofty bar more often than not.
