Why do we need to go external for depth?
Successful teams like the Predators, Penguins, Capitals, Bruins, and Tampa Bay always seem to have several players that I hadn't really heard of. They draft their depth rather than give up assets for it.
Why not bring up Wotherspoon for some depth? We have some good players on the farm. Seems wasteful to trade away picks for depth. I get you dont want Anderson eating popcorn all the time but there's other benefits to being with the big club.

Looking externally for talent is the last resort. If we had those guys within our organization, they would be either playing or the first ones called up.
Obviously we have kind of already depleted our AHL depth. Kulak, Jankowski, Hathaway and Lomberg. So we've already kind of been doing what you are suggesting.
Also, Wotherspoon is not an NHL player. We drafted this guy 1 spot before Kucherov

hmm, interesting.
i suppose the initial reaction after smith went down was to gauge what the goalie market was, in case Rittich struggled early on after taking the reigns. Makes sense that they are treating that as a less urgent need, but also looking at Gilles as immediately available depth, just in case.
The depth defenseman talk is weird. Either they don't like Kulak as the game importance starts to ramp up. Or perhaps they fear that in the event that an injury occurs, they are not satisfied with Bartowksi/Andersson being able to step in and play. Or, maybe they are looking to trade one of kulak/stone to fill a hole up front, and are hoping to find a replacement.

Agree with what you are saying, and I actually feel like the Flames have done that quite successfully this year from the folks they've brought up forward wise, and our back up goalie.
In regards to Wotherspoon though, he's been given tones of opportunities. I'd assume if they feel they need to get some D depth, it's because they don't think folks like Wotherspoon can provide what's needed if called upon. You can't simply call it up if you don't have it in your system.

I am certain that's what they believe but given Bartkowski's last game in particular, it's hard not to wonder if Spoon could be a little better. I haven't been a Bart hater but he has made some bad giveaways in his last few games.
Assuming no depth additions, the Flames are one injury away from having their #7 D play every game. If they truly don't believe anyone in Stockton is up to the task then maybe a waiver move or minor trade is in order.

Also thinking back to the Friedman interview, I think he said the Flames were in on Soshnikov. LeBrun says that one of the three teams that had in depth conversations with Soshnikov's agent was believed to be Canadian.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
There was also talk of Gallagher at the end of the segment which I found somewhat surprising. Just can't see the Flames being able to pull that one off

Wotherspoon has actually had a pretty good year just looking at the stats. He's leading the D in goals, tied with Andersson in points, and leads the team in +/- (yeah, I know).

He's played 15 games over 3 years.
Trading anything of value for a bottom pairing guy would be a horrible move for Calgary.

I really wish the flames would send bartkowski down and bring andersson up. In the few games before the deadline to at least see if he is able to play against top opposition. Then you could decide if you need to go out and get another 7th d man or not. It would be good to get him some time. I know you don't want to drop stone or kulak but it would be good to see what he brings.
I hope they know that Bart isn't the answer. It's terror inducing watching him out there.

Kulak is playing too well to take him out of the lineup. I think you let Andersson play top minutes in the AHL and give him a shot next year.

I tend to agree with you. Andersson or another player they think is worthwhile. Don't know how you go into end of season and playoffs hopefully with Bart as your only battle tested option.

I agree with this. It makes more sense to trade a guy like Brodie in the offseason and leave a spot open for Andersson in the top 6 than to have him sit as the 7th dman (as painful as it is when Bartkowski slithers back out of the pressbox).

Was that Kulak who was sent in alone on a 2 on 1? Would have been so sweet for him if he had scored. Seems like a great guy.

I'm thinking this won't happen as it would leave us with 2 left shooting defensemen and 4 right shooters and based on Treliving''s acquisition of Hamonic, he and Gulutzen likely prefer the 3 LHD and 3 RHD combination.
