From an Ottawa perspective, also a good move, specifically because it's Melnyk Ottawa Senator's we are talking about here. Save a little bit of cap space, help them tank a little more. Good move.

**Also gotta think Ottawa will try to flip Gaborik for something, a 3rd or 4th maybe?

*edit*Also Gaborik turned 36 today. You've got to think he's going to want to retire here pretty soon or win a cup. No way he stays in Ottawa for long.
The Sens can't move Gaborik because no playoff team will take on a declining 36 year old with 3 years left at $5 million.

He won't retire either with $10 million in real money to collect.

Seems like the only hope for Ottawa to escape that contract is LTIR.

Its basically $5 million in dead cap space for the next 3 years either way.

buyout costs them 1.2 million in real dollars per year over the next 3 years.

This is bad contract for bad contract, the sens will move to buy gaborik out after this season

Would Ottawa ever do a buyout on a player or are they too cheap for that?

If the Senators can't flip Gaborik for anything, then I'll have a hard time understanding why they did this trade. Gaborik has also made off with some lucrative contracts in the past (3 years $6.3 mill, 5 years $7.5 mill, 3 years $5 mil) so it's not like he would be in for chasing money...

If I were to guess, I'd take a stab at it and say Gaborik to LVK in exchange for one of the d-men sitting on the sidelines whom LVK drafted at the expansion draft.

Wow they must’ve really wanted Dion gone. Because that is a horrible trade.

Why would Vegas do that?

The thing I dont get is that Dion's contract is straight-up atrocious and has been since he signed it in Toronto. Why do teams keep trading for him?

That contract had 'Compliance Buyout' written all over it from day 1.
