Would be shocked if it wasn’t Gillies.

Gillies is a no brainer IMO but I'd give Rittich the chance to play the next 5 games (assuming Smith isn't back) -- he's EARNED it. Let Gillies play the next back-to-back against Arizona.

It will be a serious test though:

@ Bruins
@ Preds
vs Panthers
vs Bruins
@ Golden Knights

I dont believe they can.

they have healthy bodies under contract, so they must be called up over any junior player on an emergency basis.

Has to be Gillies, which gives MacDonald the crease in Stockton. Parsons was injured last night as well.

See who they find to back up in Stockton now.

Time for Rittich to show what he has in a really tough stretch of games.

Hopefully Smith is only out a short time, but I'm not really concerned with how Rittich has been playing this season. Big moment for Rittich, could be a big step for him in order to become the Flames starter in 2019-2020.

Eric Francis @EricFrancis

Hearing from several sources Mike Smith’s groin injury not nearly as bad as originally feared.

Could also big moment for McDonald in Stockton, who seems to have all been left behind.

That's definitely a good thing. Chris Tanev of the Canucks was out recently with a groin injury that only took him out for 2-3 weeks. Hopefully we're not looking at anything more then that.

I was being facetious.

I thought that Gillies being called up was so obvious that I was shocked the question even had to be asked. So I went into smart ass mode and gave the least likely answer to the question.

Great news, and a well-earned opportunity for Rittich. I was hoping they'd give him a stretch soon to reward him, see what he's really got and give Smith a breather.

Looks like a great opportunity here, and hopefully Smith won't be in any rush to come back. The Bruins, Preds, Panthers, and Golden Knights are all teams Rittich is more than capable of handling, and Gillies/Parsons should be able to handle the Coyotes which would take us to the 22nd. Hopefully enough time to rest there.

If he’s staying on the trip for the next 4 days, even if not dressing as the backup, it’s generally a good sign if he doesn’t need to come back home for any immediate diagnosis and/or treatment...but is he staying out there?

I remember a story from a couple of years ago about a defenseman (can't rmemeber who it was) who had come back from a bad knee injury. In a game a year or so later he twisted his knee, felt a pop, and went down writhing. However, he later realized it was more panic than actual pain, and when he settled down, he realized it was something very minor.

Could be something similar here, given Smith's injury history.

I would imagine they are attempting to get an MRI before deciding anything.

Might as well get one in Boston, I remember reading that there are more MRI machines in Massachusetts than in all of Canada. Not sure if that is still the case but might as well take advantage.
