Default Is it a good time to sell high on M. Ferland?

First of, I think Ferland has been having a terrific season, and he is locked in at 1.75M, following which he is a UFA. Ferland’s 20 goals are tied for 37th in the NHL, and assists have been coming more often as of late. However, in large I think it is thanks to great chemistry with Gaudreau, and not Ferland being a game changer on a consistent basis. I assume that is also a reason he had a hard time becoming a main stay on the first PP unit.

On the other hand Ferland has been a bit cold lately, in the last 13 GP he has 1G and 5A. It looks like a decent total, but it is a bit concerning he wasn’t able to find the back of the net lately. If, and that’s a big if, he is replaced by someone on the first line I believe that his value and offense will plummet.

Also, Ferland’s UFA status following next season means he is either going to be paid by the Flames or a different organization, if he keeps up his production. On the other hand his production may come down to earth, which will have the Flames even more hard pressed to find offense, or a first line RW.

Finally, I am not suggesting giving Ferland up for futures(aka magic beans), but I think he can be a main piece to get another game changer on the Flames. The question is who? I doubt Ferland would be enough to make Ottawa with Mark Stone, without significantly adding, but he could be a vital piece in a huge trade that would benefit both teams. So do you think it is worth it for the Flames to contemplate moving him? Or is the first line chemistry too much to risk at this point?

This team is already thin on offensive wingers. If he's included in a package that brings back a better winger sure but Mark Stone is a pipe dream. Senators fans must think we are crazy or something. Could you imagine if every day Senators forums were full of posters discussing how they could get Gaudreau from the Flames. That's how silly things are here.

I am all for adding elite talent. Losing Ferland would create a hole but wouldn’t hang up the phone if there was interest in him. As OP says, could be a case of selling high.

Not a lot of depth on the Flames so any trade of a roster player is going to hurt.

I agree regarding Stone, maybe someone like Rantanen from Colorado, but that’s another pipe dream. However, someone like Blake Wheeler who is 31, and has a cap hit of 5.6M for two seasons? That would be like trading Gio for a package around a #4 D though. It’s extremely difficult to find an upgrade on a player without it looking impossible, so I see your point.

Just the whole discussion about Bennett’s value had me thinking Ferland is the exact opposite, and I was just considering if we could profit from it.

20 Goals, 15 assists through 55 games... he’s statistically improved in each of his first 4 seasons here and has been a big part of the first line no matter how some try to spin it. No. We don’t trade Ferland - we look at extending him now at a good number IMO.

He could be a 30/20 guy easy in this league and he’s 25... I don’t consider trading him at all.

Id like to see him on the team for another 6 years. Saying that I hope he plays most of that time on the 2nd line.

like most everyone on the team, maybe. If someone offers up draft picks for him then you decline but if he could be part of the package to get a key piece like Mark Stone then you include him.

You gotta love Ferland but he's not part of the core or untouchable. I don't want him traded but it'll likely happen at some point in his career. If he became a UFA this summer and was asking for a big raise then I'd trade him for sure but we're not at that stage, it would have to be a hell of an offer to get him.

Ferland is to Gaudreau and Monahan as Anson Carter was to the Sedins or Maroon was to McDavid and Draisaitl last year

He's a player that got fortunate through circumstance he's on a line way above his skilll level and his stats benefit from it.

Let's say the Flames trade for a winger to play on the top line, where does Ferland move? Probably the 4th line.

As for not having to add much to get Stone from Ottawa? Are you kidding? Ferland wouldn't even be the centerpiece of that deal yet alone not adding anything significant.

No way you do this. Finding a player that can do what he does immediately.....where is this player? Seriously.

The impatience, and over/undervaluing our players around here sometimes makes me nuts. Having Ferland on any line with his skill and nuclear deterrent threat helps his linemates do things they wouldn't normally try.

We keep Ferland.

Threads like this make me realize that most fans are only interested in trades for the sake of trades because it gives them something to talk about it. Trade deadline day must be Christmas morning for many of you.

Sometimes I wonder about the posters on this site. After all the gnashing of teeth about Borwer’s and Stajan’s contracts you get a young, homegrown guy outperforming his contract and you want to get rid of him?

Ferland is probably at a all-time high in value and he does become a UFA after next season. I still don't think it makes sense since the Flames need more guys like him on the team, not less.

I am not sure where you got the impression about impatience, as I suggested he has been doing great. I was just curious if it’s a situation we can profit from. There was a time when Brodie/Bennett were considered untouchable, now as their play changed, so did fan opinions. Which is why I think it’s worth discussing. I am also not sure 31 GMs can agree on value of players, let alone a fan message board. As a result, I am glad you know the exact value of each player, and I would love to hear all of them to avoid driving you nuts in the future.

No it’s the possibility of improving your team that has fans excited. It’s the same reason many of us watch the trade deadline and draft day. It gives people hope. It is because we all want to see a great team, and not just a good one. Besides it’s another something to talk about that we don’t hear in the media daily.

Sure - get rid of him.

And, while you're at it, get rid of every young person in a job because mostly, they're terrible at it, even if they are fair value for the money you're paying them.

They also make lousy team players because they tend to be a bit erratic, and can't yet be trusted with the keys to the kingdom.

Sometimes they underperform. And every once in a while surprise you. Sometimes they even show up for work.

But sure - get rid of 'em all.

Smacks of millennial impatience to me. (Yup - old guy yelling at the cloud....)

Seriously: I *like* Ferland - he has his issues, but bringing "it" pretty much every game isn't one of them. He works hard, doesn't take a lot of dumb penalties, and is learning at a greater rate than I expect of a guy from whom nobody expected anything at all.
