I really hate to say this, but Chinese tourists by far are the worst here. They are the ones who are most commonly ones to ignore closed roads and get stuck and have to get rescued.. Step over closed walk ways leading to icy areas near waterfalls, etc..
The waves on that beach are just crazy! I remember a lady from my tour group getting soaked by a rogue wave, but she got dangerously close to the water. Luckily for her, it was a small wave, but it could've been avoided if she listened to the guide's multiple warnings and the warning signs in the entrance.
Any recommendations for self guided driving tours ?
We used Nordic Visitor when we went. We did the 10 day self driving tour around the island. Nordic Visitor took care of everything. Pick up and drop off at the airport, car rental and all accommodations. I would highly recommend. Made everything easy on our trip as we were finding it quite difficult to find accommodations in some of the spots when we tried to do it ourselves. Plus they provide maps with points of interest, guide books and suggestions for what to see and do each day.
Well I finally decided to stop fighting it and join the tourism industry, web development is well underway, loads of contracts signed with tour operators, lots of fun stuff ahead.
We wanted to add a really easy to use but full of information interactive google pins map for people to plan their trip, it will show attractions and cheap stuff to do around the nation with us providing lots of 360 images, drone footage, etc... As well as a toggle to show what tours are available in the area. A bit later this year an APP which will be added will make things simple for people when they are in destination.
Anyhow semi-related we took our new Mavic Air out yesterday and I tried out my hand at editing with premiere pro, this is our home town of Hafnarfjöður.
Watch in 4K if you have the ability to do so, this DJI drone is truly incredible, did absolutely no work on color correction, balance, sharpness, etc..
Its basically a suburb of Reykjavik, takes me 15 mins to drive to downtown Reykjavik.
The "capital area" is basically 6 municipalities, but it should just be considered one city, which is why tourists should not be afraid to not book Reykjavik for accommodation around Reykjavik if they rent a car.

lol the old days Hafnarfjörður was the butt of jokes in Iceland, well and Akureyri, but that's dying out with the older generations. So being that everyone has Newfie jokes, it was the case and still is that I hear older people share a joke about us when I tell them where I live

What's a good time of year to visit Iceland, with just wife and no kids?
Not looking to do some extreme adventure sports, but some brisk hiking or kayaking etc would be fun. Experiencing Iceland culture would be the tippy top of the priority list, as well as a healthy dose of R&R.
I’ve recently been reading Ragnar Jonasson’s books set in Siglufjordur. I thought it was a made up location but it’s real and now I want to visit Iceland and travel to Siglufjordur! Think I’m going to try and make it a trip the next time I go back to Scotland.

I’m heading there in October and I’m going inside an extinct volcano, doing a super jeep tour in the Landmannalaugar area.
Other things I have in mind:
- Visit one of the recent active volcanoes
- Go to the Sky Lagoon for some recovery
- Free diving in Silfra (dive.is)
- Visit the Ice Caves in Katla
- Do the food tour in Reykjavik
- Drink White Russians in a Big Lebowski themed bar.
- I suppose go visit the Blue Lagoon the day I return home.
I hope you find a good time to visit!
