Seriously, read the articles I've posted. It's not me against CP here. It's CP against all of the government, legal, scientific, and economic bodies studying the issue in Canada. They all expect only a gradual erosion of the share currently held by a deeply entrenched black market. They all warn that expected pricing of legal pot will continue to make the black market an attractive alternative for many users. Has reading the news, reports by government officials, etc. gone completely out of fashion?
You’re actually just drawing bizarre and outright incorrect conclusions from the things you’re posting.

You’ve either failed to properly represent your position, or you’re posting things that don’t support it and claiming they do.

The “doesn’t anybody read”? act is thing. When people who actually understand the industry in it’s current and future form are telling you you’re drawing poor conclusions, you should take it into account.

Cliff this is just my anecdotal take but I’ve been to a number of industry events and spoken with a number of individuals getting their companies ready for recreational sales and the overwhelming sense I’ve gotten from everyone I’ve spoken to is that while the illicit market won’t go away all together in the short term their market share will be reduced to less than 10% of all sales. As time goes on that market share will continue to shrink until you basically have the same amount of Terrys as you do bootleggers.

I said there will still be a black market once pot is legalized. Lots people said that's insane, nobody will continue to buy from Terry once pot is legalized.

For the record, my guess is in 2021, the black market will still account for about a third of marijuana consumption in Canada.

I mean sure, if you mean the day after pot is legalised.

Jesus Cliff. Everybody knows there will be an immediate decrease in black market share followed by a slow desintigration of whatever is left.

The industry is still going to be expanding and fully realising itself for years after the law changes. Point is, the black market will simply cease to exist after legalisation. It won’t be tomorrow, but black market weed is going to be a foreign concept to the next generation. That’s extremely quick.

The monopoly I mean is every retailer has to get their supply from licensed producers, Even Alberta which which is privatizing retailers.

As someone else mentioned earlier - how many people buy their alcohol from anyone but a regulated entity? Terry's backdoor moonshine biz isn't quite what it was in the 30s.

prohibition of alcohol didn't last nearly 100 years like Cannabis

Licensed producers are privately owned companies who compete with each other. That’s not a government monopoly. Even in Ontario where government will be handling sales, the government is free to shop around for the best priced LP to be their supplier.

let's say a giant retailer.....like Loblaws, enters the foray and says to an LP, we want these different strains, these different blends etc.. wouldn't the LP just make those for a big order? Wouldn't there be "grow your own" kind of like you see here with the breweries that rent space to small producers?

Yes, of course the black market won't cease to exist immediately but it will happen relatively quickly

It costs a lot of money you have to jump many hurdles to get licensed, maybe one day it will be possible for small time producers.

True, but anyone can't just start up as a producer without going through the process, there's a certain amount of regulated lp's that retailers have to get their supply from.

you don't think supporting lp's is supporting the government to some extent?

Some of you are sure buying the "end the black market" crap that Trudeau is selling, they think a price point almost double the average will do it? if this was anything other than a cash grab and they were serious about ending the black market they could do 5/g and money would still be made hand over foot, it costs pennies on the dollar to grow .. around 300/oz proposed prices? insane, lp stuff isn't that good.

Most "terry's" have a circle of people that won't go somewhere else, almost every user i know has their script, tried an LP once, and never went back, it's just too expensive

Define what you think the cutoff is to declare a producer “small time.”

What a useless argument going on in here. Of course the black market wont completely disappear overnight. There will always be the connoisseurs that insist on their Terry grade weed. But the vast majority will quite enjoy the convenience of liquor store availability, as well as the selection that whittles it down into beer/wine/spirits grades of intoxication. Also, there's the non-stale factor. Buying what you want, when you want it is huge. People are willing to pay for that, much like they're willing to buy an overpriced six pack from their corner liquor store on game nights, instead of going to Costco on the weekend and buying flats of beer for the next month.

But go ahead and keep arguing the stupidest of details here, guys. Try to pinpoint the exact moment in time that there are no more black market dealers in Canada, as if being right about that is important at all.

I guess no one really knows how it's going to play out, I'm a skeptic, and I don't think they are going about it the right way. This isn't legalization, they're criminalizing it further with the crazy cannabis related penalties they are introducing. I hope their model fails.

The only realistic thing they have done so far was scrapping the ridiculous plant height restriction.

How isn’t it? It follows the model of a legal, regulated product. It’s already been widely discussed that legalisation this year isn’t going to look the same as legalisation in five years. What model are you hoping to see?
