I think CP's biggest issue is everyone wants to the Flames to have a perfect team. 4 stacked lines, 3 stacked d pairings and 2 stud goalies. Sorry that doesn't happen anymore
The Flames currently have a top 10 1st line, 2nd and goalie. They also have one of the best if not the best defence pairings in the league. They also have 2 other top 15 2nd and 3rd pairings
No question that have a bottom 5 3rd and 4th line. For me I'm fixing the 3rd line that gets 15 mins a game and 2+ mins on the PP per game than the scrubs on the 4th line playing 8 mins a game. It should be priority #1
The 3rd line lack of production and the PP get fixed the Flames could be cup contenders. They aren't that far off. I bet Frolik doesn't shoot it on his own net again this season. Everyone needs to relax. They just went 2 months without giving up 4 in a game and a month without a regulation loss. Just need a few more goals

I completely disagree with this assessment. As we are, Calgary Flames has the talent necessary to go deep in the playoffs and be a contender. But we have the wrong(est) possible Head Coach in Gulutzan and Offense Coach in Cameron. This team desperately needs an experienced superstar coach to utilize the talent we have and adjust game strategy as needed for each game and against each opponent...
But we are draggin' this off-topic...

Might not mean anything as there are only 3 games tonight, but Don Maloney scouting the Flyers-Capitals game.
Flames don't play Flyers or Capitals again this season, unless they meet in the cup final.

The Maltby-McCarty-Draper reference does bring up a good point...
A fourth line can provide a valuable contribution in other ways besides goal scoring (which is usually fairly minimal). They can be good defensively, or an energy line, or a hitting crew to provide some toughness.
The problem with our 4th line is that it provides nothing. It has no identity or purpose. And again, I think that is at least partly because the coaching staff doesn't try to create a purpose or mandate for it.
Decide what you want the 4th line to be (based on the talent you have) and develop it to be that.
Lomberg-Lazar-Hathaway could be a really good energy line.
But as it stands right now, we have Lazar, Stajan, Brouwer, Hathaway, or maybe Mangiapane, thrown together and they aren't fast as a group, they aren't tenacious as a group, they don't hit much, they don't generate offense, they aren't particularly good at shutting down their opposition. They just take a regular shift and put in time.
Directionless.

Most of those guys don't belong in the NHL. THAT is the major problem.
Stajan needs to have the Conroy talk, Hathaway is an AHL'er, Lazar is an AHL'er. Brouwer is a 4th liner, Mangiapane is an AHL'er.
They've all just sort of coalesced at the bottom because for one reason or another they don't fit through the drain.

Doesn't Martin have a bad contract? Martin for Brouwer?

Not sure if serious...
Martin's contract is bad. Brouwer's contract is superbad.
Brouwer gets almost twice as much as Martin. And has the same amount of goals! And only 4 points more than Martin.
Doesn't Brouwer get PP time too? Yikes!

I've always liked Brett Connolly. For whatever reason, he's never really put it together at the NHL level.
Would be a nice addition to our 3rd line, sandpaper player with some decent hands and scoring ability. Definitely an upgrade over Brouwer and Hathaway.
1year left @ $2M so acquisition cost shouldn't be huge.

Problem is he's being (over) paid for the Cy Young he won a couple years ago and for once I'd like to see this team get away from $3 million + players who are 30 or older deteriorating away to nothing in the bottom half of our roster. Stajan is a UFA? Might as well acquire Smith amirite? No!
Then to top it all off he ain't coming here for free. Gotta give something up to acquire him.

I was going to make a joke about how with Stajan on his last year we need someone to fill the role of $3+ million bottom 6 player whose contributions will wither away to nothing very soon, but I see Roof-Daddy beat me to it.
Make no mistake, that is the road Zack Smith is heading down. I fully expect him to be a Flame before the trade deadline because this organization never seems to learn.

Smith is a salary dump move by Ottawa at this point. Doubt it would cost more than a late pick or B prospect. Or at most, both.
Edit - One glaring concern would be that Smith has played more at LW this year which would likely be the landing spot here. Not sure we really want to see Smith-Stajan-Hathaway or Smith-Stajan-Brouwer
