Don't even get me started on Ferland; he is Captain Houdini.

Come on now...the guy in on 50% of our goals probably has something to do with it

Just piss poor leadership from the entire team. And not just the coaching. No one on the Flames bench looking like they have it in them to make a comeback. Just heads down, like a bunch of defeated school kids.
Perfect time to call a timeout. While it might not have resulted in a goal, it gives the team a chance to collect themselves. Nope. Our coach saves his timeouts just in case he needs to challenge a goal. That is exactly why he does not call timeouts. Serious question - has there been a time out called at any point this season? Our coach puts on the same line that just got scored on. Our coach 'asks' the players if they are fresh, and of course they say they are.
All game long I imagined we had the other GG behind the bench (Gallant). I imagined the team as skilled as we are, playing for a coach like him and hitting their potential.
We have the wrong GG behind the bench.

I could not agree more. Amateur hour behind the bench.

He isn't a guy that normally panics. There were so many better options. Literally anything would have been better than what he did. He could have grabbed the puck, shoved it up his bum, and ran out of the arena with it lodged up there and it would have STILL been better than what he did.

My only guess is that he was afraid of getting hit, maybe he still feels the affects of the jaw. I have no idea, but very unusual play for sure.

No coach tells their players to play the puck back like that, at that stage of a one goal game. No coach draws up getting clean beat off the ensuing face off to give up hope of at least one point.
For all that skill, it's not the coaches fault they can't lean on skill and get at least a goal or 2 in every 10 tries on home ice.
Maybe the flames just aren't skilled enough to be a upper tier team.
Offensively, they only have 1 real top line threat in Gaudreau. Monahan is just a elite pure shooter in his spots but pretty darn avg in all other facets of the game. Tkatchuk seems to be progressing top a high end player, but outside if that, maybe the forwards are just not skilled enough to be regular contributors.
Goaltending is good, d finally looking good. Inability to score, particularly cash in with the man advantage clearly is a lack of skilled players seems to be the crux of the problem. Having a rw who can shoot and handle the puck could be a the major void hurting the pp. The setup as is, creates no bang-bang opportunities that the pk needs to worry about.
|
Back to this are we. So fire the GM, trade a few key players keep the coach. Right?
BTW saying our goaltending is "good" give me a break. Smith has been stellar.

Yeah, the top line disappears too often. Especially Monahan and Ferland.

Is Gaudreau really more inconsistent than other top scorers in the league?

So, what's next? Make the team stay in a hotel for home games??
Obviously, they are distracted. Are a bunch of the young guys in new relationships or something??

Sure they do - and a good coach calls a time out when a situation like that happens - they're deflated and a bit confuzzed so....take a breather, settle down, and go back to what they were doing. Costs nothing at that point in the game.
GG doesn't wanna do that. So he puts guys right back out.

Lol
Gaudreau is over a point per game and Monahan is on pace for a career year and close to 40 goals.
You make it sound like they are going weeks at a time without scoring - they are the only players that regularly provide any type of offense.
They have been a little cold over this last stretch but overall they have carried the offensive load for most of this season.
They do need to take some responsibility for the poor PP though.

Looking forward to it!
There should be backlash after gift wrapping 5 games in a row. Particularly at a particular bespectacled individual behind the bench though, that has been an all season issue.
It's 5 games where a lack of mental fortitude and lapses in play/decision making, as well as an inept powerplay allowed points that were in hand to slip away.
Just learn from it boys. There's more than enough lessons to draw from this stretch.

nobody scores points every single game
The other two on the top line though

You should check out the game-by-game stats for him. He was hot during the 7 game win streak, and completely cooled off - including before the streak.
Nothing wrong with pointing fingers where they are due; him and Monahan have not been delivering lately. Consistency makes a playoff team.

What a contrast in coaching styles tonight was: one team constantly pressuring, one team constantly turning back; one team driving for the puck, one team waving at it with their sticks; one team trying to win, and one team trying not to lose.
Also, another huge difference: the Knights always had someone in front of the net and as soon as they got possession, the puck went to the net. The Flames, on the other hand, rarely have a body in front. There was a moment I was discussing this very fact with the guy beside me and the Flames got the puck in the offensive zone. The player turned to find someone to pass it to, and there wasn't anyone within 30 feet of the net or the slot. So he passed it around the boards where it was intercepted.
I hate the way we play. I cannot wait for this coaching staff to be gone.

Ah but this is just one loss, and first in regulation time since the end of December. Plenty of hockey yet to be played ... All of you should stop over-reacting. There is clearly nothing wrong with this team.

The post-game show on the way home from the game has me seething. Do Steinberg, Louno, or Wills have an ounce of objectivity anymore? Just paid advertisement for the Flames.
This team sucks. It’s as simple as that. Can’t score goals to bury teams, they are always one shot from getting back in every game despite how good the Flames are playing. Their PP is the worst I have ever seen at the Dome, I’m assuming bey have one of the worst home records in the league, their coaching staff makes questionable decisions each and every game, and the team is likely the most mentally weak team I’ve seen in decades here in Calgary.
I’m taking a few nights off. I’ll give my tickets to some coworkers. I work too much tons End my nights seething mad at this garbage hockey team. Without Smith or 3 on 3 OT, this team is a bottom 5 team in the league.

team is fragile...
not sure how else to explain the last 5 games... its like they all go into panic mode.
you could literally feel the ice tipping with 5 min left as LV started their push...it really felt inevitable to me that LV would score - i couldn't have guessed how they would score mind you...
not sure why GG is so stingy with his TOs either... spend them or lose them... if you are protecting a one goal lead and they are getting pummeled, not sure why you wouldn't use it. No reason to save them, because if LV ties it, you just hold on for OT anyways...
really dumbfounded
