From Cap Friendly Twitter:

With Jaromir Jagr's cap hit being below the $1.025M cutoff, any loan executed by the #Flames (minor league or to a club of any other league affiliated with the NHL), would result in Jagr's remaining cap hit coming off of Calgary's salary cap for the balance of the season.

Placing Jagr on regular waivers & loaning him to Europe (as was reported by @TSNBobMcKenzie) instead to terminating his contract, gives the #Flames the option to recall him down the road. That flexibility will only cost CGY $370,968 in salary & 1 spot under the 50 contract limit.
If accurate could be a handshake deal once Czech season is done with.

Got to see him play as a Panther when they were visiting Calgary in Jan '16. Also got to see him... wearing a suit at this year's home opener vs the Jets. Too bad I never saw him in action wearing Flames uniform. Best of luck in Kladno!

Was really rooting for Jags to catch Gordie, but unfortunately it didn’t work out in the end. I still look at this acquisition favorably though. His mentorship of the young players, watching him don the Flaming “C,” the excitement he created around the team when he first signed and even though it was short-lived, he had a great month where he played really well before all the injuries mounted. Hopefully he looks back at this experience positively as well.

I have a Flames Jagr jersey, and it isn't a lie. Totally worth it

Yep. Do not regret spending that $300 at all.

I suspect that, at this point, there is no intention to have Jagr come back to play.

However, the way this was completed, very specifically leaves that option open. I suspect that leaving the option open was intentional.

I do suspect that Jagr's full intention is to come back for the tail end of the season and the playoffs, and if he can get his legs back, I'm all for it. It's pretty much up to him at this point, because I can sure see the team willing to give him another go if he can perform at a reasonably high level in Kladno. A lot of people keep talking about how he's done, but for a stretch of games here before his injury troubles started Jagr was doing really, really well. That kind of depth player could prove very valuable.

Kladno HC plays in League 1, which is a tier below ExtraLiga.

Was there no team in the higher league who would take him?

He's from Kladno and co-owns the team, so that's probably the reason he's there. He can get all the ice time he wants I guess.

For it to all work out and have him come back, the following has to play out, Imo:

1) He remains injury free in Kladno, and the lingering injury issues are gone
2) He gets in the shape he knows he and the Flames need him in
3)He gets some confidence and swagger back in the lower tier hockey and gets the work in
4)He himself feels he can contribute, and wants to pack back up and move back here and into a hotel here from late March until June to be part of a last playoff push
5)The Flames want him and have room for him post deadline.
6)The Flames either have injury issues or didn't get the depth at the trade deadline they wanted, and he would be a familiar replacement with new found health, fitness and confidence
7)The Flames are in or fighting for a playoff spot of course too for him to bother.

So a lot of things have to happen. But nothing miraculous has to occur either, and it's smart business by the Flames to leave the option open. He's been around for over 4 months, so coming back into the room, with the players, and the system isn't going to be an adjustment at all, as it may be for a guy airlifted in at the trade deadline.

We knew that. Why not the higher level of competition if the goal is to return to the NHL? My opinion is he's not returning.

Playing through injuries, which it is confirmed he was doing, wasn’t working here. If he can truly get healthy and in game shape there is still an outside glimmer of hope that there is a more interesting end to this story

Yeah, you may very well be right. I'm thinking that we know what Jagr is, we know that his remaining strenghts are still just enough to make him at least semi-efficient on the NHL level as he was on a 30 pt pace during his stint. I don't think he has to prove himself capable at a high level as he's already done that. He rather needs to get healthy, play a lot and get his groove back. If he can do that in Kladno I'd say he has a shot, aöbeit a small one.

He doesn't need competition, he needs to be injury free and in better shape. I don't think the skill has left him as much as those two things affected him in his games here, and the skills will be there when he has increased confidence. A boost of confidence playing in that lower tier will help that.

He did have 7 points in 22 games, and sounds like a number of those games he was trying to play through somethings...but the stats line is pretty much the same as Versteeg.

So get playing time in and the conditionig that goes with it, and step back in to the lineup at a better place than where he left off, if it all works out.

I take some hope for a legendary story from a few pieces of info.

Jagr was playing through injuries, and it moved from swollen knee to hip
It wasn’t helping the team to have him try to get better here and now
The Kladno ownership may be supportive of his remote rehab / training camp
Flames executed this in a manner that allows him to potentially be recalled this year
Czech league season ends late Feb
Czech press reported or inferred that the intent was to play there through end of season then return

As it stands, if he doesn’t return, it is expected. The team is doing the right thing by saying as little as possible while acknowledging this may be it.

There could be a reasonable chance they are giving him a chance to get healthy and in to game shape - if he does so, there is a path for return, and if not, they managed it in a reasonable way. There is a lot of uncertainty and hope for it transitioning from a short term worthwhile experiment and mentorship to a better result. And management is pragmatic enough not to be betraying that hope. But I suspect it may be there. Everybody loves a good story but you have to hedge your bets

I still think he has in his mind that he wants to beat Howe's record. The only way now is to get a contract next year which admittedly seems like a longshot. But, if he could go and get in game shape, come back and contribute in a late run for the Flames, maybe someone will take a flyer on him next year.

Could this be the goal?

Handshake deal with the Flames?

Let him get back into game shape/healthy and come back to the team on a PTO next year and see if he can contribute?

Honestly, I think both parties have dealt with this less-than-ideal scenario with a lot of class and grace with both sides trying to do their best to help the other.

I think this was the intent behind the initial contract and it appears that both sides have honored the letter and spirit of that contract to the best of their abilities.

If somehow Jagr magically puts it all together I wouldnt rule anything out, but I wont get my hopes up either.
