Jagr neither, but he clearly couldn't just step into the lineup after signing and had lost several steps regardless. Tough league to even just keep pace

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Sources say Jarome Iginla won't be ready for the Spengler Cup and is now a long shot for Team Canada and the Olympics.

I think he needs to hang them up. By the time he can get into game shape it will be too late to find a team.

Why is he still hanging on? Just hang them up already.

Thanks to Thomas Bach, the Olympic tournament will be a complete farce this year, no way Iginla should lower himself to this level. Canada should not even be sending a team under these circustances.

According to Rob Kerr, the IIHF is desperately trying to have the IOC avoid the Russia ban so that the KHL players can play in Korea.

Sean Burke said the team will be announced on Jan. 11. It will be a good one IMO!

He's still got stuff in his basement and garage. He'll clear his basement first and then after that's done, clear his garage. How long that takes, I'm sure Iggy will figure that out. Until then, he'll be gunning for a medal and/or cup. Gotta love those Rocky marathon movies!

Update on Iggy (translated from this article):

Quote:
No, Jarome Iginla has not announced his retirement as an active player. And he does not hesitate to say he still has the taste of hockey.

"I had hip surgery, but I feel good," he said. I train every day and I'm fit. The door to a return is not closed, but honestly, I do not know what's waiting for me. We'll see… "
Quote:
"I had good times and I consider myself privileged. Is it finished?I do not know ... ", he repeated.

Sad thing is, his toughness, shot and net presence would make him one of best options as of now for a PP1.

Fixed your post. I would have thought that after the failed Jagr experiment that all of this ridiculous yearning for players from yester year would have completely died. Iginla is done. Iginla was done two years ago, the Kings and Darryl Sutter were just too desperate to acknowledge that. Iginla was done in Calgary after he was traded. No ties to the team or the community, other than this was a place he played once upon a time. I see no reason for him to want to come back to the Flames in any capacity. He moved on. For all the #### we give the Oilers and their fans for not letting a certain team and its players be front and center to running their organization, there certainly seems to be a contingent of fans who desire the same thing for the Flames.

Guys don't forget how to hockey. Especially guys who dominated once upon a time.

If he's kept his fitness up, and fixed the problem that was bugging him, surely he is a serviceable NHLer. It obvious the hip was hindering him.

Tag along with JJ to Kladno and come back to the Flames in March, both entering the first game to ”also sprach Zarathustra”.

There's no real room for Iginla anyway, unless there's another winger injury.

Frolik is back soon, pushing Troy back to the 4th line.
Versteeg is returning as early as late Feb, also likely back on 4th line. Off-chance maybe he sees some time with Bennett and Jankowski on return?
Jagr is away in Europe on reserve.

That being said, if something bad happens to our top 9 and we're still holding a top 3 Pacific position, we'll need help. We're as starved for a pure goal scorer as you could imagine.

Still think he might end up in Boston. However ultimately I just hope he gets one more real kick at it somewhere (Tampa? wouldn't that be ironic). I don't have an explanation for it, but part of me thinks if he ends his career without a real shot at the Cup there will be a lingering bitterness about his time in Calgary and all the years of his prime when the team faltered for one reason or another, and it will tarnish his relationship with the Flames post-retirement. Getting to retire with either a Cup or a close shot at it, and I think any bitterness that may exist will be gone. Like I said - just a hunch. And probably ridiculous for sure. However bitterness often lingers in ridiculous places.

From last season. . . .

Toughness:

Shot:

Net Presence:

I could understand people feeling that he has too much organizational baggage to bring him back, but you can't dismiss the argument that he still possesses some skills that the Flames, and in particular their PP, are sorely lacking.

I wouldn't do it if I were Jarome.
I don't see how him playing one more tournament at an older age takes away from what he's accomplished. It's still the Olympics. Iginla loves to play hockey.
