Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Stream of consciousness here.
They discussed this team's toughness/killer instinct this morning on the Fan and it got me thinking. Is it really the players that are soft or is this how they're instructed to play? I mean, how many times have we seen players that under usual circumstances would be lining up an opposing player for a hit but then circle away from the hit? Quite often actually. Sure there have been a few good hits the last couple of games, its not totally absent, but it certainly seems like players are shying away from contact to ensure they aren't out of position and in doing so are abandoning chasing the puck or leaving opponents open to make passes because they (Flames) are rushing back to their assigned spot. They're granting lanes.

I did too, then thought about what if there was interference but never put it on again.
This whole thing is my fault.

That doesn’t mean that those of us who are near or over 40 and from Calgary don’t remember what it used to be like to hate the Oilers and Edmonton as an extension, and want to beat them every single time and hope that the Oilers or Esks lose every single game to other teams.
For GG to pass this off as another game against a “good team” is insulting to certain section of Calgary and Flames fans who went through those years and beating the Oilers is mandatory, or else.
Maybe he and certain players should take to YouTube over this break and check out some 80s and early 90s highlights BOA highlights.
Get some press clippings of the banter between the two teams and papers and how much this is and was a hated rivalry, as writers traded insults in the paper, and non PC (now)jokes were flying between the 4 papers.
Bring in Mike Bullard to talk about the criminal spear he took from McSorely in the 88 Playoffs.
Ask Steve Konroyd about the knee he took from Semenko when engaged in a fight.
Ask Risebrough about shredding a jersey in a penalty box.
Ask Nattress about the blatant elbow head shot he took from Messier, and then chirped by the Oilers bench as he stumbles around trying to get off.
Ask Guy Lapoine about the beer poured on his head on the bench in Northlands.
Bring in Sheehy and Baxter and Peplinski to talk about the dirty trick and eye gouges McLelland, Hunter and other pieces of crap on those teams pulled in scrums and in fights.
Ask fans who travelled up there, many from CP, in the dark days of the late 90s and early 2000s on the treatment by the fans, arena staff, security and police, as if Flames fans were all on parole and were guilty before proven the chance to be proven innocent.
Maybe after a bit of a lesson he wouldn’t be so dismissive of the rivalry and the putrid results he’s prepared and got out of his teams under his direction against Edmonton. Being the only Flames head coach in the franchise history to have yet to beat the Oilers and have the longest losing streak to that team in the 200+ times these teams have played is embarrassing to the fanbase and an outright failure.

Exactly, there was one play, in the 1st I think, Kassian was coming from behind the Flames net with the puck and Hamonic could have rocked him. There was no positional danger, the other Oilers were God knows where, but instead he turned away and they got a scoring chance. So many times I'm saying to myself, just rub him out or hit him or something, but instead they just wave their stick at the puck hoping it works.

So after sleeping on it, I've completely changed my mind. Points in 11 straight is awesome! a great feat!
EFF that! no it doesn't. We have lost to the Oilers 7 straight games!!!!!!! Gullickson and Cameron needs to get the hell out now! Embarrassing! Even during the Oilers dynasty in the 80s, before we got Vernon, I don't think we ever lost 7 straight to them.

I've been critical of the 960 guys at times but I am pretty happy we have a local station that's willing to rip the team when it's deserved. Fantastic show this morning by Boomer and Co.

this loss was predictable from earlier in the week - at least for those of us who refused to give the players a pass for terrible effort against the Sabres. Yes - good to keep getting the loser point though. They will play thru this. But this team isn't getting anywhere near Cup contention for quite a while yet. That killer instinct that many here are now saying the team lacks - has been a Flames problem since they arrived here in 1980.

Gretzky must be giving McJesus whining lessons up in Edmonton as he has become quite the whiner. I’m sure the refs are getting tired of him and if he keeps it up fewer and fewer close calls will go in Edmonton’s favor.
Flames fans at the Dome need to bring back the “whiner” chant when McJesus starts yapping at the refs like Gretzky did years ago!

It's funny, I turned off the game after the Strome goal, but had this feeling there was goalie interference. I should have watched a little longer.
I think it is pretty black and white. A player was in the crease, touched the goalie and prevented him from making the next save. If you don't want to get called on goalie interference, don't go in the crease.

I’m totally fine with that as well as McDavid caught the goaltender’s blocker while going through the crease. The issue is the league didn’t overturn a Hawks goal this week despite a player being on top of the goaltender. It needs to be black and white. Contact in the crease = no goal. End of story.

Well had it been the 80s this game and at least one other would have been a tie

Flames over thought and blew chance after chance it was more frustrating than entertaining. Chucky however was trying hard to make everyone of his shifts in OT matter.

Yeah that Hawks goal was pretty blatantly interference. It happened against Toronto too, so it was all over every media outlet.

All the x’s and o’s Combined with all the fenwick and corsi doesn’t amount to much of the team is playing with no emotion. That’s why analytics can only take you so far in hockey. It’s not baseball. Passion matters in contact sports.

This years versions of the teams hung out at a Cabo San Lucas all inclusive during the bye week. Things sure have changed.

I appreciate the sentiment behind this, but that is a bygone era. We are talking about the era of millionaire players and advanced stats now. The NHL is more of a neatly packaged product than some sort of tribal communal event that sports used to be. We will never see a bitter rivalry like that again, against Edmonton or any other team. Even the rivalry the Flames had with Vancouver in the Iginla era will be hard to replicate. I think sports has just changed.
