By handful do you mean the rest of the season? Because that's what I said. Nice context gymnastics though.

Backlund is not your standard pro athlete. Dude has a very reasonable head on his shoulders and loves the city. Not surprised he's taking a level headed approach with this.

You said his last 3 games were shaky...anyway Calgary doesn't have until the end of the year. This needs to be sorted by the deadline...Backlund is easily 5M+ on the open market there is no debate. Looking at recent UFA contracts that would actually be a steal.
Flames let him walk and then what? sign JT lol

My guess is 5 years 4.3 per.

Flames have a better chance signing JT Miller from the Rangers to an offer sheet than signing JT from the Islanders.

Wow those numbers are terrific for a Selke candidate who bleeds Flames and hates the Oilers/Canucks. Anything lower would be a massive win for the Flames. Love it.

If we get Backlund for anything under 5x5, its gonna be a lot of fun to throw that in Oilers fans faces who crowed about the Lucic contract when it was signed.

For a guy that talks about advanced stats and #### you’d think you’d not be contrarian for a change on something that seems as much a win as this one but I guess what should we posters expect.

This thread is a big Backlund love-in but I've never been that impressed. I appreciate his past services but it's time to move on. When the games get physical (ie: playoffs), he seems to disappear. 2 playoff goals in his career and he presently has the worst +/- on the active forward roster. But I'm sure he'll improve once he hits his prime mid-way through a 5 year contract at age 32, right? (reference see: Stajan, Brouwer) It's great that he loves our city but I'd rather put my priority on winning a championship. Put the cash towards signing Tkachuk long-term and get a young player who's not afraid to play a physical game grow into Backlund's role. Backlund is the kind of player you like to play against and he'll soon be on the decline. That's the reality and this is a business.

Plus minus and hockey cliches are not a compelling reason not to re-sign him.
And the metrics suggest he is NOT the type of guy that you want to play against.

He’s an advanced stats machine along with being an above average offensive player. Players like him tend to play good into their 30s...This is a no brainer to me.

I would be absolutely fine with 6X6 but I suspect it will wind up closer to the 5 per season.

If Janko eventually can replace Backlund - great - you still then have Backlund as an asset to peddle. Guys like him command a return as they are hard to find.
This is not a franchise asset rich enough to see him walk for nothing. And they aren't going to trade him as long as they are in the playoff picture.

Backlund making $5M at 34-36 could be a liability.

If they can get him to sign for less than 5 it would be a steal. Have to do it right now. This is much better than most thought it would be

I know it's a pipe dream but usually the reported asking price is more than the contract ends up being. Plus Treliving is a wizard and I think he has a couple tricks up his sleeve.

I was thinking earlier the number would start with a 6, but am pleasantly surprised it apparently starts with a 5. But this is where BT shines and I would not all all be surprised if it started with a 4.
4.9?
Probably a pipe dream though. Sill, anything in the low 5's is absolute wizardry.
