Man crush?

Isn't Burke the one who stated Ryan "can't spell intense"?

If Burke has a man crush on anyone on the Sens it is Phaneuf.

I still don't think Ryan has forgiven for that intense comment.

Meh, good chance Garrioch has no idea who the Flames prefer.

Also, this is probably not the popular opinion here, but I actually prefer Brodie over Hamilton - at least in how they manage the game. I do think that Giordano is propping up Hamilton (anyone that plays with Giordano or Backlund looks good, period). Yes, Brodie has been inconsistent lately, but I look at Brodie as more of a catalyst out there most nights that is pushing the pace. Hamilton is more of the recipient so to speak (not saying he is a passenger or something - just doesn't quite push that pace like Brodie does).

When Giordano is on the ice, he is pushing the pace. Next shift, I find it is Brodie that is pushing the pace. Hamilton and Hamonic seem more like the complimentary players on their respective pairings.

I would be upset watching Brodie get traded. I have been critical of him especially last season (for instance, I was the one that was saying Wideman was the one that was anchoring that pairing early on in the season before Wideman's wheels fell off again). Brodie this year has been way more good than bad, especially in the last 20-25 games. Started off really well, but then quickly tanked his game, but recovered nicely in the last 20-25 games. I think the Flames would sorely miss him if they trade him for a forward.

I do think Hamilton would be the more expensive trade chip, but I do think that between the two of them, Brodie is the more dynamic defencemen (though I do wish he had a better shot - I think he would be ridiculous if he somehow managed to work on it and improve it).

Yeah he doesn't meet either Flames need at forward IMO.

RH shot center that can play bottom 6, PK, and win faceoffs.

Or scoring winger.

Only way it makes sense is if the Sens want out from that contract, want a friendly deal to buyout, and Brouwer goes the other way.

Smith has 3 years and $9.75M total left

Brouwer has 2 years and $9.0M total left

Brouwer would cost $6M over 4 years to buyout, Smith would cost $6.5M over 6 years to buyout.

I doubt there is much of a crush...

Quote:
Brian Burke, now president of hockey operations for the Calgary Flames and part of the U.S. management team, drafted Ryan in 2005. But he also made some candid and disparaging remarks about the now-Ottawa Senators winger during the past couple of months.

“He is not intense. That word is not in his vocabulary,” Burke said during one meeting, as quoted by ESPN.com. “It’s never going to be in his vocabulary. He can’t spell intense.”

Yes, but he said that while defending his position that Ryan should have been on the US Olympic team.

When taken out of context (which the media did), it seemed like he was bashing Ryan (some even treated it as if Burke was calling Ryan illiterate, which is the most ridiculous take possible). If you read the full quote in context, he was the one defending Ryan. He also said that everyone would be calling them crazy if they named the team and Ryan wasn't on it.

I Garrioch is guessing there. Burke is the president and likes Truculence so they must want Smith.

Or, Maybe The Flames are taking on Smith's salary to facilitate a deal involving Hoffman. Would help to cut Salary in Ottawa, while lowering the return the Flames send.

I'm not sure I'd call that a man crush.

Of course an NHL hockey team would like Bobby Ryan... if he didn't cost $7.25 million per year.

I love Monahan, but there's 0 room to argue he's better than these centers this year:

Crosby
McDavid
Bergeron
Stamkos
MacKinnon
Malkin
Tavares
Kopitar

I think it would take some rose coloured glasses to call him better than:

Couturier
Eichel
Seguin
Scheifele
Schenn
Matthews
(Healthy) Getzlaf

And then he's in a mix of old timers and up and comers, plus former elite centers relatively struggling this year:

Toews
Barkov
Draisaitl
Backstrom
Kuznetsov
Karlsson
Staal
Barzal
Thornton
Pavelski
Couture

I'd have to put him closer to 20th best center than 10th best.

Yeah, I wouldn't call it a man-crush. I was just pointing out that too many people read one line of a quote and assume Burke hates Ryan, which isn't true at all.

At that cap hit, I don't think anyone has a crush on Ryan.

Rose coloured glasses? More like a quart of alcohol and 30 days left to live.

Just want to dive in on Barkov. There's no question who the better player is. Barkov is, in my opinion, a clear top 10 center in the game and is pushing for top 5. Barkov is not all sizzle and no steak. He has one of the best two way games in the league behind only Bergeron and Kopitar IMO.

I had Barkov there, but he still needs to stay healthy. Not only is it just a benefit of having him in the game for the Panthers, but when you're only playing 60 games each year with 0 playoffs, it's harder to compare him to the players going 82 games+.

This is Couturier's breakout offensive season and suddenly it's rose-coloured glasses if you think Monahan is better?

With an emphasis on this year, yeah, I would say so.

He's fighting for the Selke and the Rocket Richard. When was the last time that happened?

Inversely, I put Toews on the same level of Monahan based on his play this year so it wasn't like I was cherry-picking.

The more I look at the Sens roster the more I wonder if Pageau is potentially a target too.

RH Shot, can play C or RW, 53.1% on faceoffs, 3rd among Sens forwards in PK TOI, Leads Sens forwards in Hits, 2nd in blocked shots, and has two more years at $3.1M.

Seems to fit the bill for exactly what Treliving is looking for, but also doubt the Sens look at moving him.

No added scoring though. 6 goals, 15 points. Puts him behind injured Frolik.

Laugh, ok...

Couturier is playing on the top line for the first time in his career and is excelling. Stirring the drink. He's over a point a game with a 57% defensive zone start.

Monahan isn't a PPG player while playing with the best player on either line. And his d zone start is 42%.

Couturier starts his shift in the d zone 15 pp more than Monahan and is still putting up more points.

In other words, Couturier is a complete hockey player who's putting up elite point levels. There's no Rose colored glasses argument or who is better. There is reality and delusion.
