I hate to be the one to break this to you: weed is already readily available for 17 to 21 year olds.

Maybe we just need to make Tide Pods only available with a prescription?

Anyone who eats a Tide pod is drunk. Nobody who was high on weed would ever make that leap.
I say that as I currently much down on some Moscow Mule kettle chips that I don't particularly enjoy, but you can imagine why I bought them in the first place.

Where do you find those chips? I had them once over the summer and haven’t seen them since. I need to know my experience was more than a dream.

Cardston, Magrath, Del Bonita and Arrowwood are dry communities.
To my knowledge alcohol has never been sold in Cardston. Over a hundred years. Most any afternoon however there are people puking their guts out walking down main street.
Taber police are barking about banning marijuana in town, essentially making it dry through by-law. This of course, to protect their existence as the only crime the 18 or so sworn in officers in a town of 8000 are capable of thwarting are the kids they nab with a roach in their ashtray.

So currently landlords are allowed (I believe?) to ban smoking tobacco in rental units they own. I assume they would also be able to ban smoking pot?

Yes why wouldn't they be able to? No one is forced to sign a lease in which these rules would be in.

should be able to no problem. smoking is smoking, no matter the product.

Not sure if Alberta landlords will face the same problems but in Ontario they are unable to add in the 'no smoking pot' term to the lease until the current lease is finished. Seems to me common sense should prevail here, if there was a 'no smoking' part of your lease it should just translate to no smoking of anything, legal or not.

Doesn't it get trickier since weed can be prescribed medicinally? No one (to my knowledge) smoke cigarettes medicinally, but if you outlaw granny from ripping her bong to cure her diabetes I could see how some would take issue with that.

A lot of medicinal cannabis can be delivered through oils and flours, so smoking it isn’t necessary (and from what i’ve heard, isn’t preferable).

Yeah, I don't understand why anyone would think pot shouldn't fall under all the same restrictions as cigarettes.

Yeah I would tend to agree. However, the smell of pot doesn't stick to things like tobacco does. You can still smell cigarettes in the halls of Vegas hotels. Pot scent tends to dissipate over night and doesn't stick to walls and furniture.
I want to add something kind of funny that goes along with the Kelso "does that detect any kind of smoke?" idiot line from That 70's show. Our smoke alarms are super sensitive. The toaster sets it off on its lowest setting. Super annoying. But I've blown pot smoke directly into it and had nothing happen. Not sure why.

I went through years of that. Probably 5 different ones in all different locations, though I think they were all Kidie since they seem to have the market sewn up in Canada. They are all junk. False alarms no matter what I cooked.
Then I discovered the Atom:
https://www.amazon.ca/First-Alert-P1...rds=atom+smoke
Haven't had a false alarm since. Bonus is it is a 10 year battery, which is the life of the unit so you won't get woken up at 3 am by this one.

Well... they shouldn't be allowed to unilaterally make changes to the lease before it expires. But yes once the lease expires they should be able to make that restriction (although I think they need to have an exception for medicinal use).

I renovated my house 18 months ago and the electrician put smoke detectors in every bedroom, plus the hallway, and they're all connected. When one goes off they all go off. I live in fear of those things now. It's the worst getting them to all settle down after an incident.

Won't argue that but the flip side is pot smoke has a much stronger odor than tobacco smoke meaning most people will smell it from much further away, or at the same distance it will be much stronger. If the arguement for set backs from public spaces for pot smoking is based on smell then those distances may need to be larger than for tobacco.

Doubt it. Its still a private lease that you don't have to sign.

This is true.
Although I would also argue that being "used" to the smell of cigarettes plays into that a bit. Plus it's a better smell over all. Lets be honest, whether you hate or love the smell of weed, it's magnitudes better than the smell of cigarettes.
That said, there are obviously different issues with smoking anything (fires, ash, holes in furniture, etc..)
