Did anybody leave the radio on and listen to Gully? Any synopsis? Or should this thread be renamed "Jim Rome And Farrell are terrible".

Lol, Rome is great. Been listening to him since he was on 66 CFR at 9 or after Flames games. Somewhat of a pioneer and there was a time he probably had the most entertaining radio program in North America, or at least right up there. Despite the fact that has show has fallen a bit from its peak and some people don't like him, he's an undeniable talent in the industry.
If you have a pretty wide foundation for North American sports knowledge and don't take yourself too seriously, there's a good chance you'd end up liking him after a few listens. If that's not the case, maybe they could bring sports talk with jock back for those 2 hours? Maybe have another hour of Pinder yammerings followed up by another hour of Kelly Kirsch not knowing what is happening? I don't like that call... Not a very good call.

“The crew around here” is not some monolithic, collective hive mind. You will discover that this forum is loaded with all sorts of people who each, individually have all sorts of their own opinions. I bet a bunch of them like Jim Rome, and others do not.

SportsTalk with Jock was cringeworthy. He tried extra hard to copy Rome with the exaggerated dramatic pauses, and then the repeating of his takes and explanations. It was terrible because it wasn’t funny at all. I recall a 5mimute rant about a golfer named Brian Gay joining the PGA tour. The rant was about his last name...coming from a guy named Jock, certainly ironic if youre going to be playing the juvenile card.
Rome was on 2hrs in those days because Cfr cut an hour out.

I can agree with that up to a point. I love Rome's interviews, and if I could just listen to those without all the call-in fluff, I'd do so happily. (Well, I'd pick and choose. I just am not equipped with the power to appreciate college football or basketball.)
My main problem with Rome's show is that the ratio of good stuff to filler has deteriorated over the years, and the filler has got very old and predictable. By this time, you could probably make a 24-hour compilation of Rome saying ‘ERRRRRRRR!’ and dragging it out to fill up airtime. Then there's his habit of repeating, in its entirety, the last funny thing someone said on the show, and informing the audience that it was funny, just in case they weren't capable of making up their own minds. And the pregnant pauses, which don't actually last nine whole months but sometimes seem to.
The Gulutzan interview is just the kind of thing Rome does best. Some interviewers would have turned it into a non-stop monologue about The Stick Throw. (Some, I suspect, would have preferred to interview the stick.) Rome is too good an interviewer to do that. He made it wide-ranging, informative, and as he always does, let his guest's personality come through. I don't like listening to his show, but I'm very glad he does pieces like this one.

Sports talk radio has to be more difficult in this age and time because of the internet and fact that all games of all sports are televised. There's nothing they can talk about that you haven't already read or seen late evening or first thing in the morning on multiple sports news web pages. There are just so many news outlets and ways to get sports information that it must be hard to make a sports radio show that isn't overly redundant with all the information available on the internet including fan forums like this.

My wife absolutely hates Ferrall's voice.
Naturally, whenever he's on and we are in the car together, I make sure to turn it up.

Whenever I say the word "phenomenal" in my head, its always as Rome says it. Weird but true.

No, there is a crew around here and a prevailing accepted on most topics where if you dont toe the company line you get attacked, silenced or banished.

I disagree. It was great listening to the Sarich hour yesterday. Sports radio can still be interesting if they can get away from the usual cliche questions and ask hard interesting questions.
Besides post game or intermission cliche filled interviews, Its amazing how we basically never hear any Flames or even even other athletes on radio/tv talk about their views on other sports or worldly matters.
We can all get the scores and standings. There's walls they can break and make it interesting but they don't want to.

a. You are completely wrong. There is a healthy debate on almost any given topic between well established posters. I couldn't even tell you who would be seen as the "accepted" view on those topics.
b. Congrats, however, on properly using "toe the line".

I think Farrell comes from Pittsburgh, and did PBP or colour for the Thrashers at some point before they left for Winnipeg. They always talk hockey and the other guys with him actually seem to know a bit about the game too.
