With multiple sources, safe to say he wasn't liked. So glad they got rid of him, for me he ranks right up there with Gilbert as one of the worst Flames coaches.
Well, Hartley was paid to get results out of the lineup he was given, and he did OK to me.

After listening to Sarich several times and how articulate he is I sometimes wish he was our defense coach.
People forget how hard Crisp was as a coach but that's why his shelf life was so short.
At the end of the day the players sometimes forget that they just want you to be successful as a badass coach.
I miss somebody the gold quotes from Bob....like I'm not running a nursing home, or a bakery even though we make lots of turnovers.

Yeah, I was going to mention the Parker thing. That link ain't working for me, so here's a different source (not sure if it's the same article, but it's the same story).
In the past, coaches have also bullied players into fighting. Mike Chamber interviewed Scott Parker, a former Colorado Avalanche enforcer, who at 35 is dealing with symptoms affiliated with head trauma symptoms. Parker had some harsh words about his former coach, Bob Hartley. “He was a junior B goalie trying to tell me how to fight. He was always just degrading me. Not to be a [wimp], but he was a bully,” Parker said. “And he could be because he was in a position of authority. What was I supposed to do as a rookie? Go tell him ‘[expletive] you’? I did that stuff at the end of my career, but at the beginning of my career I was just a chess piece to him.”
Parker also estimated that he suffered around 25 concussions, and said there were several times when he was so banged up he told Hartley he needed a night off, or at least a game off from being asked to fight.
“He would call me a [expletive], say that Hershey [the Avalanches’ former minor-league affiliate] would be my next stop, where I’d be ‘smelling chocolate fumes all day long.’ I remember I thought I had a broken foot and told him about it, and he called me a [expletive] and said Hershey would love me,” Parker said. “Nobody needed to question my commitment to doing my job. But I was just constantly belittled by Bob Hartley. I really have no respect for the man.”
I was told that Hartley was super strict with the players diet. Stricter than any other coach. As an example, Anaheim was in town and after the game, on the bus, the Anaheim players got fast food (burgers and fries). This would literally never happen with the Flames under Hartley. Never a reward. Anaheim won the game too.

That's actually OK. Hartley got out of the round 1 - something the Flames have done twice since 1989. Definitely better than Greg Gilbert, who he was compared too.
Players need to remember that salary is being called "compensation" for a reason. They were being paid millions to compensate for having to play under Hartley.

Lets seek a higher bar.

And other players in the league get paid millions to not play for Hartley.
Why put your own players in such a negative position that other players were putting "whichever team Bob Hartley coaches" on their no trade lists?
This is the guy that ran Baertschi and almost Backlund out of town.
He fluked out for one season where the team's underlying numbers were just as poor the two seasons prior and the one season after.
He was an awful coach and numerous sources are saying he's an even worse person.

I really have no great love for Hartley and he was only hired because he was Feaster's buddy.
But name any other Flames coach in the franchise's history who actually exceeded expectations for an entire season. Its an incredibly short list, comprised of MacNeil, Sutter and Hartley IMO.

Hartley's % is one of the lowest in Flames history (leaving aside interim guys like MacNeil and Charron). Hay was way worse and he was let go after one season. Gilbert had two seasons. Page and Brian Sutter had worse records and got one less season than Hartley.
IMO Hartley was on the chopping block but his one PO success and Adams award got him a reprieve.
Wow, never knew it was to this extent behind closed doors.
The one thing I do credit him for is forcing dmen immediately looking to play the puck up ice once retained in their own zone. The controlled, d to d plays are something I am not a huge fan of
I have zero reason to doubt Sarich, and I don’t, but Hartley must be a master at putting on different faces. When he talked to the media here I always got the impression that he really stood up for his players. When Johnny, Mony and Bouma broke curfew and were suspended I remember Hartley saying something along the lines like “they didn’t rob a bank or anything, but every player is held to the same standard.” He could’ve went out of his way to rip into them but really played it off as not a big deal.

Not sure that means different faces, just means different tactics in different scenarios. Sounds like he was hard on his players behind closed doors, but would defend them out in public and to the media.
Doesn't mean what he did was right or wrong, but it likely means most of the things he did was with purpose vs. reacting emotionally. I think we often try to bucket players, coaches etc.. into way to general buckets. Player X goes out and acts like an ass when he's out at a club for example, must mean he's a locker room cancer. Not necessarily, could be the most supportive team mate in the world. Coach yells and screams about his team in an interview, must treat his guys like crap in the locker room.........not necessarily.
