considering that Chaka Khan played the NHL Awards a few years back, this didn't surprise me much.

I'd rather Kid Rock, who's a genuine hockey fan play than some big name musician who doesn't give a crap about the game.

Wow - what a lot to unpack. No one here actually said he was racist. Just a terrible person. I base that description on his assaults and stupid publicity stunts. As for whether he is a racist, I have't heard him say anything racist or do anything that suggests that, aside from refusing to quit using the Confederate flag at concerts.
However, as an Asian (well, half) myself, I can confirm that partying with me does not make one not a racist. In fact, liking all Asians doesn't, since there happen to be some other races to consider. There are some folks who are undoubtedly racist who confine their racism to blacks or Hispanics or East Asians or Semites.
Bottom line, I don't care if he plays "literally every instrument" which I doubt - the sitar is pretty hard. His music sucks IMO (and a lot).

Selecting guy who waves the confederate flag at his concerts seems stupid.
Allstar games Suck, this decision for a meaningless entertainment bit is stupid....
Most years I will likely not am not watching , this year I will be avoiding it altogether.

Serious question, because I genuinely don't know; can anyone provide evidence of Kid Rock being racist or is this just stemming from left wing people claiming he's racist because he supports right wing policies?

Average age of NHL fan is 49 years old in 2016 (Source Market Watch article last year on sports TV audiences). Given that's the case, is the NHL really missing the mark with Kid Rock? Not suggesting all 49 year olds like Kid Rock, but he's the right timeline to appeal to the Under 50 over 40 age group.

No evidence, just people looking to try and add something that appears as actual reasoning to an argument that is simply a personal preference story.

pretty tone deaf choice...
the NHL PR should have known that this would going to spark controversy...the last thing you want is this being the story and not the All Stars getting the media attention.
not to mention the choice seems 15 years behind the curve... should have stuck with Nickelback

Kid Rock being a hockey fan likely has something to do with it...
really though who would please everyone? seems kinda silly to get so bent outta shape about it

There is no one who everyone would think was a great choice. It's just that Kid Rock is disliked so much. It's just a little odd that the NHL would court this kind of negative publicity.

they could have easy have gone with something less divisive.
its like the NFL kneeling controversy... there was like maybe 10 guys doing it before the League and a few outspoken owners decided to throw gasoline on it....
suddenly it went from 10 guys to virtually every team in the league and a story that was on the back pages for months that no one cared about became the story for 3 weeks or so.
that was bad calculus on the part of the NFL. I think Kid Rock was a poor choice by the NHL

But is he though? I get he's not the most vanilla choice you could make, meaning yes there are people who are likely passionate about their dislike for him versus mere indifference, but he was pretty main stream and "popular", so why do you say that?

I don't think you'd say he's mainstream. Popular enough in his niche I suppose.
He just comes up a lot when people cite bad musicians or "worst song ever".
These reviews of his last really big single are funny:
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/si...l_summer_long/
More latterly, he did top out this list though:
https://www.metrotimes.com/city-slan...album-by-a-man
At the end of the day, he's a controversial guy who doesn't really have wide appeal. I'm not saying it's a big deal, just an odd choice. I'm surprised they didn't go for a local musician. Tampa doesn't have many, but Florida in general sure does.

He just sold out 6 shows in Detroit, so his fans clearly disagree.

I don't think this speaks at all meaningfully to the point GioforPM is making here. In fact, six shows in Detroit sounds to me very much like the definition of "niche."

Average age is 49? Wow, if that's at all accurate then the NHL and pro-sports in general is in more trouble than I thought. I could see it if that was the average age of a season ticket holder, but if that's the average for a 'fan' then that's really bad.

I don't see that.
It's not really much higher than what you'd expect if all age groups followed the game equally, and that the age group with money, so makes financial sense.
