Flames won the game so no harm in the long run, but if the Flames lost due to their best defenseman being ejected wrongly, I would be so pissed.
So the refs called it and ejected Gio. Total garbage. Especially since they never called the initial penalty they waited 2-4 minutes before getting around to the pesky business of doing the jobs they're paid for.
It was pretty clearly, especially in light of the NHL's 'No Harm Done, No Supplemental Discipline' ruling, appeasement to the crowd.
Thats pretty concerning.

Wes Gilbertson has confirmed no supplementary discipline for Giordano
As it should be. For once they got it right (sort of - I still think the call on the ice was wrong and was a response to the result, not to the action involved).
If I'm walking along the sidewalk, my nose buried in my phone reading the latest "TheScore" BS article, and step into the street without looking, I may be the victim in a tragic motor vehicle/pedestrian accident. The driver may or may not be to blame, depending on the situation.
But the person who's really at fault? Me, for not picking up my head and looking where I was going.

Truly amazing how many people on CP were gushing over the Paul Kariya documentaries just a month or so ago ... oh such a great player ... what a travesty his career was cut short ... blah blah blah.
No wonder Kariya just avoids the game completely when - if he followed it - he would have to listen to the justifications written here to suggest Gio's hit isn't a problem or otherwise worthy of sanction.
You want players like Kariya to entertain you ... you have to remove head shots. Period.
Lol, Kariya vs Stevens is a MUCH MUCH different beast than this hit. Stevens most famous hits are very clearly head hunting. The fact that you are incapable of discerning the difference is laughable. Like all your posts in this thread to be honest.

I'd be interested in hearing from a female defenseman what she would've done in that situation. Would there still be contact? What penalties, if any, would she expect be assessed?

In this case, I'd like to think that poor driver is the victim, he'll be scarred for life.
I was up in the air about how the league would do this. I was convinced Cassie Campbell was right. She was so adamant about it. Truth is Aho got murdered on that hit. Head, chest and that knee, oof that knee. Hit was definitely not filled with malicious intent on Gios part. But he meant to plant him thats for sure. Glad there was no suspension.

Looked very similar to this hit too where he just stood him up, Kadri looks down and gets a mouthful of Gio's forearm but still hit in the chest, didn't charge or target the head but braced and "shoved" him off.
Don't believe this was a malicious hit, nor that Gio should have been ejected, was just incidental contact due to the height difference and Aho with his head down.
Either way, unfortunate that Aho was injured but don't think it's Gio's fault due to intent considering how he was planted and Aho skated into him with his head down. Luckily Johnny always seems to have his head up and doesn't put himself in vulnerable positions like that.

If Gio tried to get his upper body out of the way somehow, chances are the knee on knee would’ve been devasating to potentially both players, even more so to Aho because that would be the first point of contact instead of the body, and certain to Gio because his feet were planted in the ice and upper body contorted at an angle, so his knees would take it all.
Good to see the league use common sense here, sucks for Aho but it wasn’t a smart move to be staring at the ice as you’re cutting across the front of the net.

Cassie (though not a defender) got it pretty much right on the broadcast last night.

Not trying to stir any ####, but what would be the relevance of that?

Gios hit should not have resulted in an ehection on the first place. He had very little if no time at all to react at Aho cutting in right at him. Gio just braced himself for the collision. It seemed obvious the refs were appeasing the CAR crowd and the CAR coaches. Perhaps thinking they could prevent CAR retaliating towards other players. Either way really glad the NHL office came to their senses with no further actions.

Women's hockey is a non contact sport? A lot of people say Giordano could not have gotten out of the way so how would a women, in a non contact sport have played that situation? Seems pretty straight forward no?
I've played non contact men's hockey and accidentally on purpose getting in someone's way to knock them on their ass is an art form.

You 'plant' slightly less then Gio did and that's not even a body checking penalty in beer league hockey.
